60's Garage Rock, Nuggets, Pebbles & Back From The Grave

Oh, we are so no-digital. ;) But I do think it will be available as downloads soon..

Farfisa is one hell of a great sounding organ indeed. Hammond and Vox are two other organs which sounds excellent too. For example, the Vox organ was used in House Of The Rising Sun by The Animals organist, Alan Price. Steve Winwood used a Hammond B3 organ in Spencer Davis Group.

BTW, the guy we're asking to join us were the organist in The Strollers, see video below.

Hammond B3:

Vox organ:

Farfisa organ:

Sweet! So, downloads it is then! I am looking forward to that! :D;) And Swede, you managed to dispel my myths about organs being really creepy instruments! LOL! Thanks! They sound so divine! In fact, the organ as of right now (after the electric guitar) happens to be my second favourite instrument! :D And I also just found out that Ray Manzarek of "The Doors" used to use a Vox Continental Organ! Thanks to instruments like those, classics like "Light My Fire" sound really beautiful! Thanks for those vids Swede! Much appreciated! :D I really enjoyed them! And is it me or do organs like the Vox Continental and Farfisa make the songs sound even more psychedelic? LOL!

You are absolutely correct, Vox and Farfisa were very popular in the mid to late 60's and the most common organs used by pop groups, so that's probably why you think they sound so psychedelic. LOL

Ray Manzarek was a great organ player indeed!

Speaking of psych, garage, and sweet organ sounds, check out The Blues Magoos. Their two first albums, Psycedelic Lollipop and Electric Comic Book, are both awesome! These guys use a Vox Continental too.

This is one of my fav Blues Magoos songs:

This song which Deep Purple totally stole the riff to use it for their hit, Black Night.

Good stuff!!! :D Yet another band for me to check out! Love 60s stuff! :D And edited to add : As much as I love Ian Gillan and Co for songs like "Child In Time", "Highway Star", "Hush" and "Space Truckin'", Deep Purple should be sued!!!! (if they haven't been already!) Talk about blatant copy cat type behaviour!

And my ultimate fav organ tune is this :

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=flOvM4Z355A

The organ riff here is kick-ass!!! ;)

I love the Doors, although I don't listen to them that much nowdays. I have all their official releases on LP and I used to play them to death LOL. Good stuff, that's for sure.

Another organ favourite for me is "Writing On The Wall" by The Five Canadians (they were from San Antonio, Texas, not Canada(!) LOL). I love the singers snotty vocals! What an attitude! He almost spit out the words.

I think at the rate at which I am discovering new bands every day be it 60s or 50s stuff or the new stuff (thanks buddy! I owe you one big time! Seriously! :D;) ) I think, I'll get sick of The Doors eventually just like you did! LOL!

And woah! That's like the best organ tune I have ever heard!! It beats the hell out of "The Doors" and I loved the intro where I got to hear the Farfisa alone in all its glory! And I love the waltz that follows where the organ continues to dominate and is it me or does the vocalist's singing style remind you of Mick Jagger when he used to put on that "Southern Drawl" especially in albums like "Exile On Main Street"? LOL! It is no wonder that these guys are from Texas and not Canada! Ooh, BTW, Did you know that there is a band called "Five Americans"?

You're welcome, I am happy to hear you like it. I do love the Doors, but I have heard the songs a millions times LOL. Actually, I'd love to see the Doors movie that came out recently.

I think you are right about the Mick Jagger similarities, it was probably bands like Stones, Yardbirds and Kinks who got these guys to start a band. It's simple, but damn catchy and it has got a whole lot of attitude! I think The Five Americans had a hit with a song called "Western Union", if my memory serves me correct.. and a song called "Evol" too.

You're talking about "When You're Strange" right? I believe it features Johny Depp?! Weird! I thought the surviving members of "The Doors" would do the narration rather than Depp! I mean what does he know about psychedelic rock and Jim's weird but beautiful poetry writing skills? The only things I associate Johnny Depp with are the words "pirate" and "caribbean" for obvious reasons and of course Old Mr. Willy Wonka! Anyway, I too would love to see it but I checked NZ itunes (only has the soundtrack album), Real Groovy music store and Fish Pond but no luck! None of them are even renting out the DVD! Damn it! Hope you have way better luck than I'm having at the moment and actually get to watch it! :D Yep! You're spot on about the "Five Americans"! But somehow, the "Five Canadians" have won me over! ;) Oh and that song "Break'em On Down" by the Soledad Brothers should definitely go into the current music recommendations thread! So frickin' awesome! :D And I have to ask, have you seen "Shine A Light"? Initially I thought that it was going to be a boring documentary about Brian Jones and stuff since that song was written for him in the first place but when it turned out to be this full length concert special, I was pretty much jumping up and down! I actually saw it twice in one day because it was aired twice on the same channel! My mom thought I was crazy! LOL!

^^ Haven't seen "Shine A Light" yet, but will do. "When You're Strange", that's the one.. :)

Got to post a 60's garage favorite of mine:

The Troyes - Love Comes, Love Dies

This is a masterpiece in minor. I love the haunting sound and the guitar playing is fuckin excellent. It was released in 1967 on the Space label, the plug side was "Help Me Find Myself" which is a great tune as well. Both sides has been comped on Glimpses, Vol. 2, whilst Help Me Find Myself is also on The Lost

Generation. Unfortunately, all I know about them is that they were from Michigan and that they released at least one more single, their debut, which is called "Rainbow Chaser". "Rainbow Chaser" has been comped on on Glimpses, Vol. 1, Let Em Have It Vol. 1 (CD) and Psychedelic Sixties, Vol. 1.

Hope you enjoy

Swede, you HAVE to see "Shine A Light". I really recommend it! You are in for one big treat my friend! :D Honestly, it is just the thing for die-hard Rolling Stones fans like us (especially since the Stones are your favourite band of all time! ;) )

I really loved "Love Comes Love Dies". The melody reminded me of "Paint It Black" only a little more mellow combined with beautiful lyrics! The singer's voice was so nice and gentle like in the song "Tears Go By". Just lovely!

And Rainbow Chaser was really nice too! :D It in fact reminded me of a really nice combination of "The Last Time" and a bit of "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds".

Well, these songs were pretty much my first exposure to the 60s garage rock genre. I heard these instrumental songs for the first time when I was just 4 years old (back in 1991) and 19 years on, I still love it! It was on my mom's greatest instrumental hits cassette tape. :D

The thing about songs like these is that they are full of energy from the word go, and keep you tapping your feet from start to finnish and succeed in putting you in such a good mood! :D

Kiwi, you've been keeping busy checking out garage gems, I like that LOL

The Sparkles Ain't no friend of mine is a garage classic. I also like Hard Times' version of Fortune Teller. I use to keep an eye out for those 45 on ebay. They show up a little now and then, but not always in a great condition..

Check out Nuggets: Original Artyfacts from the First Psychedelic Era 1965-1968 [box set], there you have an awesome introduction of 60's American garage rock. Should be in every record collection ;)

d67868l3s29.jpg

Compiled by rock critic and future Patti Smith Group guitarist Lenny Kaye, 1972's Nuggets was the anthology responsible for reviving interest in mid-'60s American garage rock. After the proliferation of specialized volumes with the Nuggets title by reissue label Rhino, this four-CD box set is intended as the ideal summation/expansion of the Nuggets concept. The first CD reproduces, track-by-track, the original 27-song Nuggets, while the other three CDs add what may be considered 91 bonus tracks, from the biggest-selling garage hits ("Louie Louie," "Wooly Bully") to some cuts that only devout '60s specialists will know. All important permutations of the mid-'60s garage style are present: primitive fuzz, folk-rock, horn rock, psychedelic dementia, protest rock, etc. Major heroes the Music Machine, the Seeds, the Shadows of Knight, the Electric Prunes, the Standells, the Sonics, the Chocolate Watch Band, and many others are all represented, often by more than one song. If it's possible to give a five-star rating with reservations, it's tempting to do so here. No one could have possibly satisfied all rabid garage collectors with a mere 118 songs, but that's not really the point here; the object was to provide a wide-ranging box set of '60s garage rock that would entertain, represent the considerable span of garage styles, and be massive -- yet affordable -- for the committed rock fan who nonetheless doesn't want everything. Rhino has succeeded, while also presenting the songs in the best possible quality (in mono), whether from the master tapes or best existing copies. With a 100-page booklet of new liner notes (Kaye's original annotation is also included), it is the best investment possible for those who thirst for more '60s garage rock than is available on the best single-volume compilations, with a track selection geared toward cream-of-the-crop quality and variety rather than narrow collector prejudices.

You bet, Swede! :D I truly had the best time ever last night going on a 60s garage rock song hunt! B) And thanks for recommending that box set! Sounds like a very interesting collection of songs! That's going to be my next purchase! :D And "Ain't No Friend of Mine" is such a rebellious track! That's why its so cool! B) And have you heard of "The Yellow Payges"? They have some pretty cool songs too!

And I was actually thinking of posting "I had too much to dream last night". Awesome song! I love the intro with the "shaky" sort of guitar sound!:D

What I really love about this genre is the fact that the song structures seem to be so simple and yet sound so catchy that you find yourself humming the tune every now and then during the day and if you get really fed up with your current music collection, 60s garage rock is ALWAYS there to fall back on no matter what! You never ever get tired of it and it will never ever go out of style! Its timeless! B)

A bit of "brainwashing" coming our way man! ;)

DISCLAMIER : The vid contains some really psychedelic patterns which might make you a bit dizzy if you look too closely at it! It sure as hell did that for me but the song is great nevertheless so its so worth getting dizzy! LOL!

And who can possibility forget "The Ugly Duckings" eh?

I agree. This collection really helped expand my knowledge of rock n' roll in general and "garage rock" specifically.

Yes, it's funny what a huge "pop music" scene there was in US during the 60's. Feels like Beatles, Stones and the whole "British Invasion" made every high school kid wanna start a band. And there seem to have been independet labels in every little corner of the states too.

Kiwi, love most every band you've posted. Many of them are classics within the garage scene, really good stuff. I haven't heard The Yellow Payges before, but they sound good too.

BTW, my band usually covers Ain't No Friend Of Mine at our gigs, as an encore. It's perfect for an encore.

Why thank you Swede and you're very welcome! Glad you love the stuff I posted! :D I am pretty much in the process of discovering at the moment and its really a great feeling to find this sort of stuff! :D And thank you for starting this thread in the first place! I wouldn't have re-discovered this genre if it wasn't for this thread! And believe me, I would have missed out on an awful lot! The Yellow Payges are so damn obscure! In fact, if you actually are lucky enough to find one of their 45s, my advice is, just hold on to it for dear life! Keep it in a steel safe or something under lock and key! It will be such a rare find!

Wow! Your band covers "Aint No Friend Of Mine"? Wow! That's awesome! And yep! Its absolutely perfect for an encore! Have you guys released your own version of that song as a single or something? That would be fab! That song will never get old!
