  1. I just finished reading Shakespeare On Toast by Ben Crystal.

I bought it at Heathrow Airport on my trip home from London.

I was inspired by visiting The Globe Theatere and Stratford-Upon-Avon.

The book teaches you how to get more meaning from Shakespeare's writings by looking for some subtleties.

An example: When he changes from using the words "thee" and "thou" to using the word "you", and vice versa.

Thee and thou are more informal and imply an intimacy or a degree of casualness in the relationship between the characters involved. Using "you" implies a more formal relationship. If a character switches from using "thou" to using "you", it implies that there has been a change in the relationship between the characters. It always means something when this happens.

Lady Macbeth uses "thou" when talking with her husband to show a closeness and intimacy.

But after Act 1, Scene 7, once Macbeth has tried to convince his wife that they shouldn't kill Duncan, Lady Macbeth never uses "thou" to refer to her husband again. She begins to use the word "you". This seems to imply that she has lost a certaain degree of love and respect for her husband.

  2. I've only just recovered from my bout of suspected Swine Flu. Unfortunately, I passed it on to my boyfriend (and possibly his mother), as well. At the first sign of symptoms, his work have told him to go home until he's feeling better. I had it a lot worse than he has, though. I hardly ate for days, living off water and Lucozade only, I felt sore all over and had a temperature even when I was shivering like mad. My sore throat come on in the space of an hour. That's what startled me. The rapidity of it. There's every chance that I had just a common cold, but I honestly don't think it was.

    I had the flu, also.

My symptoms came on rapidly. The headache and the body aches were almost unbearable. My sore throat was minor, I had a dry hacky cough, and the highest fever that I had was 101.7. Symptons lasted for about 3 days. I, too, had shivering with the fever. When the fever broke I was all sweaty and cold. I don't know if it was the swine flu or not as I didn't get tested, and frankly, I didn't want to go through the uproar that it would have caused in our community if I indeed did have it.

No one in my family or at my office has gotten sick.

I hope that you are fully recovered now, longdistancewinner.

And that your sister gets better, JAL. And that you don't get sick, also.

  3. Let's Spend The Night Together.

Documentary of Rolling Stones concerts from 1982.

This was my favorite period for the Rolling Stones.

I forgot to say that it is on Ovation TV channel 274 on Direct TV.

  4. This morning I had a really horrible migrain, so after a handfull of tablets and a walk I feel much better, the fresh air has done me good, and the weather has been and still is beautiful.

Sorry to hear about the headache, JAL. :(

I also get migraines. I take a prescribed medication named Zomig and it works fantastic on my migraine headaches.

I had the mother of all headaches on Sunday night and Monday. Nothing helped it. I was in misery and had to miss work on Monday, staying in bed all day. Finally, after vomiting, it finally let up around 6PM. Then the body aches started. I had a fever of 101.7 F. My husband, the doctor, said that I had the flu. It was horrible. I am just feeling back to normal today. I don't know if it was the swine flu or not, but it really hit me hard. I went back to work on Tuesday, but cancelled the appointments for patients who were aged and frail as I didn't want to expose them to the virus. I washed my hands constantly and kept everything clean with alcohol and Lysol. So far, none in my family or my office employees have gotten sick yet. I think I picked up the virus from the chalis at Communion on Sunday. I don't normally take the Precious Blood at Communion due to germaphobia, but I had to this past Sunday since I was an Eucharistic minister. I followed a kid who was the Server who always drools into the cup for Communion. He's probably the one who made me sick. YUK!

  5. Well it wasn't exactly today but yesterday my catscan came back normal and I get a two week break in my treatments because my blood platelets were low.

God it feels good to feel good! :)

    :cheer::cheer::cheer:

    Great news, Charles!

Hope that you keep feeling well.

Just read about the recent hospitalization. I hope that they took good care of you and that you had a pretty nurse.

  6. I went out for ladies' night last night with friends from high school. We had a blast. I drank cheap booze and laughed my ass off. I feel like crap today, but it was worth it. Totally worth it.

I'm probably going to go to Lake Tahoe with a friend from high school next weekend. I'm excited for that becuase I need a short trip that is kind of cheap. It will be semi-cheap becuase we're going to ride with her mom in her mom's car up there, (it's an 8 hour drive), and we are going to stay in her aunt's vacation rental home, so we don't have to pay for a hotel room.

Hope that you have a good time, Mandy, for a well deserved vacation break. :)

  7. Well it was yesturday.

I went and saw Les Miserables in London, my dad didn't enjoy it but I thought it was fantastic. We didn't get back home until 2:30 in the morning!

Also I had no idea there was a Hard Rock Cafe in London!!

    Hi Jimmy's A Legend :)

I have been contemplating seeing Les Mis when in London next month. I have even checked out thier web site. They have some really good seats in the stalls, dead center stage available. I have held off ordering the tickets as these seats are really expensive. I'm glad that you went! My husband may be like your dad and not enjoy it too much, but my son and myself will love it.

Is there a subway line near the Queen's Theater? Is it easy to get to? We will be staying at the Marriott by the London Eye for one night and at the Hilton London Metropole another night. Looks like it may be easy to get to from these hotels.

I think I will book the tickets today, pending your recommendation.

I also want to see As You Like It at the Globe Theater. My son saw it this past week and said it was fantastic. It is my favorite Shakespeare play.

  8. I saw Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince today, also.

I did enjoy it. As usual, it was a little long and omitted some interesting bits of the book. The teenage love angst angle was a bit overplayed, but I think that it made it seem more real-to-life.

There were a few little ones in the audience and they were frightened by certain parts of the movie.

I thought that the Dumbledore ending could have been portrayed with a little more emotion.

Overall rating: 7.5 out of 10, in my opinion.

  9. Def Leopard, Poison, Cheap Trick at Riverbend ampitheater in Cincinnati. Yesterday.

Missed Cheap Trick because we arrived late.

Poison was OK. Not a big fan of theirs. Bret Michaels was pumped up and excited to be in Cinci as he said he had alot of friends in Cinci. He invited the audience to party with him at a local bar after the concert.

I liked Def Leopard. They played all their old hits and a few new ones. Nice performance.

But I must say, that after seeing Eric Clapton and Steve Winwood, I am afraid that I am going to be a bit disappointed at all other concert that I attend. Once you have witnessed perfection and the pinnacle of musicianship, nothing can hold a candle to that.

And I don't particularly like outdoor concerts. It was hot and humid. And it seemed like the weirdos come out of the woodwork (in this case, I think that they crawled out of the Ohio River which was next to the venue, lol) to attend these more informal settings. Too much of a party atmosphere, not enough appreciation of the performance, in my opinion.

  10. I got paid yesterday. Being without health insurance and virtually without a job (my biggest paycheck to date before this one this year was $980 for the entire month, before that it was like $700), I've been so broke that I can't afford anything. Not even necessities.

Well, today, I was able to go to the eye doctor and not only order new contacts with my new RX, I was also able to get new lenses in my glasses! My glasses' RX is about three years old, so it's a big deal. If my eyes hurt, I will be able to actually see with them on!!!!

Glad to hear that the summer school is going well and that you finally got paid (for a job well done, by the way). Happy that you got updated on your contacts and glasses.

Just reminded me that I need to check my family's eyes this summer, but they are always the last ones to get taken care of, lol.

  11. Thank you everyone who is not American for the best wishes for our national holiday.

And Happy Fourth of July to all my fellow American friends.

I will be taking my son to the airport tomorrow for his trip to England.

He should be taking off from JFK about the time of the New York City fireworks.

    Should be a great view.

(Then I will be worrying all night until his plane lands in London.)

So no barbeques or beer for me tomorrow.

My husband and other son will be working.

  12. Def Leopard, Cheap Trick and Poison at the Riverbend Music Center in Cincinnati on July 15th.

My brother won tickets on a radio station and can't attend, so he is giving me his tickets. Since the youngest son will be in England, my oldest son will go with me. My husband said that you couldn't pay him to go, LOL.

  13. Now this is just plain...Wilde :D

Mine is old...1946. Third printing, with a groovy dust jacket showing the movie, and on the back sleeve it say's "You may send this book to a member of the armed forces for 4 cents."

I'm on it next 'cos I have read the Ron Wood book...though I wound up re-reading parts of it anyway.

Donovan....when I have the book handy I'll quote some what IMHO are rediculous statements.

Like HIS influence on Zeppelin, Dylan, Flower Power...like he invented everything.

    Typical Scot. :hidinginwall:

Looking forward to your posts of the quotes, Hotplant.

I like old books. That 1946 edition may be a collectors item some day, maybe today?

  14. We had afternoon temps of 95 degrees F today!

Very humid. It was like a sauna outside.

Then we had a brief late afternoon downpour that cooled the evening temps down to 75 degrees F.

But it is still very humid out, the fog is setting in.

I hope tomorrow will not be so hot and sultry.

  15. The Picture of Dorian Gray - Oscar Wilde

That's funny...I JUST picked the same book up a few days ago. I found it in a give away book box.

I'll get to it after I read the two autobiographies I picked up at the library today:

Donovan (Leitch) The Hurdy Gurdy Man just started it. I'm on a Donovan kick lately.

In the thanks to page he thanks.."Jimmy Page, John Paul Jones, Jeff Beck, Graham Nash, and to all my studio pals, diamonds all. Let's do it again!"

Ron Wood...though I may have already read it... :bagoverhead:

That's funny. I just bought The Picture of Dorian Gray last Friday!

I also bought Animal Farm, Silas Marner, and Ethan Fromme. Barnes and Noble had a buy 2, get one free on the classics.

I wanted British Lit authors to read on my trip to England and Scotland in August. (I know, Edith Wharton was from New York, not from Britain.)

I also bought Les Miserables, one of my top five favorite books. I have wanted to re-read it as I totally enjoy it's prose and message.

  16. Oh I realised you got the CD from the concert last year. The one I got was from their show in NJ last week but I have a dvd of the MSG show which is also very good. It's awesome - they work so well together. That's nice you were able to attend with your family - good to have those sorts of memories together :)

I bet that CD of the NJ show is great. Where did you get it? I wonder if there is one of the Columbus show?

  17. I just got that CD too - fantastic isn't it!!!

I have played it about ten times, lol.

I must say, the Columbus concert was better than the one last year from MSG on the recording.

The drummer they have now is better, and the back up singers are a nice touch.

That concert on Monday was pure perfection, it cannot be topped musically.

I feel lucky that I had the opportunity to attend it with my family.

It was something special that we will never forget.

  18. I finally got my house cleaned up and put back together after having new windows installed. What a mess.

I still have to find some space to stash the kids stuff that they brought home from college and won't need until the fall.

And I received my DVD and CD of Eric Clapton and Steve Winwood Live at Madison Square Garden. What a great way to remember Monday's concert (since I was made to erase my video by security at the concert :( ).

  19. I am so sorry to hear about everyone's pets.

It is like loosing a family member.

It will take awhile to recover.

    My sympathies are with you.

I am still reeling from being forced to erase my video of the Eric Clapton/Steve Winwood concert last night.

I was busted by security for recording the concert and they made me erase my memory card of all video (I was allowed to keep my still photos). I think that someone told on me.

Cameras were allowed at the concert, and there were hundreds of people videoing as you could see them down on the floor with their cameras. I refused to erase it at first, but then they were going to kick me out if I didn't do it. I didn't want to embarass my family by getting kicked out, so I did it. I tried to talk my way out of it, but they weren't hearing it. Seems like they were kind of power crazy afterward as they started harrassing people near us for dancing in the aisles, and making others sit down. It was like the gestapo patrolling our section. They busted a few others near us for recording after I was caught.

My receptionist was also at the concert with her family, sitting in a different section, and she video recorded the concert and a security person was standing right next to her the entire time and never said anything to her even though she was holding the camera in a way that was obvious that she was recording it.

I think that people paid enough for this concert (it was worth every penny!) that we shouldn't have been harrassed. And that the video policy should have been posted. My receptionist did e-mail the venue prior to the concert and got the OK for cameras, and it said nothing about forbiding video cameras. It just said that cameras were allowed.

By the way, people were very subdued at this concert, nothing rowdy going on, no need to police the venue like MP's. Seemed like these security people got a taste of power and just went crazy with it.

And I am the most peaceful, non-confrontational person in the world, and I can't believe that I tried to talk them out of making me erase my video, lol. :D
