  1. From David Menconi's Raleigh, NC News & Observer music blog: Van Halen's Raleigh show postponed This just in from Live Nation: The Van Halen concerts in Dallas, Cincinnati, Raleigh, and Baltimore have been postponed. According to Eddie Van Halen’s physician, he is undergoing a battery of comprehensive medical tests to determine a defined diagnosis and recommended medical procedures. Fans should retain their tickets as they will be honored at the rescheduled concerts or ticket refunds will be issued at the original point of purchase. Van Halen was to have played Friday night at the RBC Center. This follows numerous reports circulating in recent days that Van Halen's entire tour was in trouble, in the wake of a few show cancellations last month. As to whether or not the Raleigh date will be rescheduled eventually: At least we'll always have Greensboro.
  2. Good point but when and if the day comes that I give in and buy an iPod, chances are I'm going to listen to stuff before I go to the trouble of adding it to my iTunes library. Then again, I'm guessing it's fairly easy to delete. Still that's far more trouble than I care to go at this point.
  3. Some interesting thoughts here on the state of music journalism in general from No Depression magazine co-editor/founder Peter Blackstock: http://nodepression.net/blogs/peter/index.html
  4. True but when I tune in something like XM's Deep Tracks I never know what I'm going to hear. If I were to hit shuffle on an iPod (which I don't own) or my CD player I would still be hearing something I've already heard before, just in a different order. Still, I love mixtapes for the sheer fun of throwing a wide variety of stuff on there from all genres.
  5. Iggy & The Stooges to Perform for Madonna at Rock Hall Ceremony According to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Iggy & The Stooges will perform for Madonna at this year’s induction ceremony. The choice of the Stooges may raise some eyebrows, but isn’t as strange as it seems: both the band and Madonna are Detroit natives, and Iggy Pop opened for Madonna at the Dublin date for her Reinvention Tour in 2004. Other performers scheduled at the induction ceremony, which takes place next Monday, March 10th, at New York’s Waldorf-Astoria Hotel: Damien Rice (for Leonard Cohen); James Cotton (for Little Walter); Patti LaBelle (for Gamble & Huff); plus John Mellencamp and the Ventures, both of whom are being inducted. 6. How is inducting someone like the Velvet Underground a "popularity contest"?
  7. Not sure what Marilyn Manson has to do with British rock "saving rock n' roll" but I never got much out of Manson other than the ability to shock. He pretty much amounts to a bunch of smoke and mirrors. The person he ripped off, Alice Cooper, was actually much more shocking back in the day. Same for rock n' roll itself. During it's inception it was truly controversial. Manson is pretty much a joke.
  8. How? So far nothing official has even been announced by Van Halen themselves and if it were, how would it benefit them by being some sort of "media stunt"? To me, TMZ never struck me as a very reliable source to start with. It's sorta like NME quoting The Daily Mirror about a "source close to Robert Plant" in the "no Zep tour" story. Not a single one of those are considered reliable sources.
  9. http://www.billboard.com/bbcom/news/articl...t_id=1003718728 Sources: Van Halen Tour Not Being Canceled Van Halen Ray Waddell, Nashville Despite reports to the contrary, sources with Van Halen tell Billboard the band's tour is not being canceled, though tonight's (March 3) scheduled show at the American Airlines Center in Dallas has been postponed and rescheduled for April 24. Three other dates have been postponed for undisclosed reasons. The source says the outing picks up on March 11 in Charlottesville, W.V., and a press release regarding the tour's status will be coming within 24 hours. Van Halen returned to the road last fall with original lead singer David Lee Roth for the first time in 20-plus years. The tour, which features Eddie Van Halen's teenage son Wolfgang on bass, has routinely sold out North American arenas. The current schedule has shows booked through April 25 in Sacramento, Calif. Van Halen is also slated to perform six days earlier at Tiger Woods' Tiger Jam in Las Vegas.
  10. Funny how no one has had a thing to say about the article itself, something I find rather revelatory. Lots of people tend to just see a headline and comment without even reading what the fucking thread is about. Case in point, the person that posted about Jagger being a "poser".
  11. Better they retire now with no new material rather than continue to tour for 11 plus years as the Eagles did while banking on nothing but nostalgia.

  13. Al Gore came up with a marvelous little invention a few years ago, it's called the internet. They have these things called search engines. I suggest you look into them. Handy little devices they are. Especially that one called Google. No, he didn't.
  14. Here's their setlist from last night, pardon the caps: SUNDAY, MARCH 2, 2008 STARLAND - SAYREVILLE, NJ GOODBYE DAUGHTERS 0F THE REVOLUTION WALK BELIEVER WALK OH JOSEPHINE EVERGREEN WEE WHO SEE THE DEEP LOCUST STREET MOVIN' ON DOWN THE LINE WOUNDED BIRD GOD'S GOT IT THERE'S GOLD IN THEM HILLS WHOA MULE BREAK POOR ELIJAH - TRIBUTE TO ROBERT JOHNSON (DELANEY & BONNIE) JEALOUS AGAIN WISER TIME ROCKIN' CHAIR BREAK HEY GRANDMA (1st) (Moby Grape)
  15. Do you have the entire album? If so, I thought it didn't come out until tomorrow. Reviews (among fans) seem mixed so I'm not so sure I'm going to be buying it. At least not right away. Not to mention tomorrow is a big release day as it also includes Deluxe editions of Skynyrd's Street Survivors and Whiskeytown's Strangers Almanac.
  16. I don't think that has anything to do with why the Police reunion tour is such a big deal. In fact, I can't think of a single "liberal cause" that has even been remotely associated with this tour. Back in the day The Police played shows like Live Aid and reunited for an Amnesty International concert but if those things helped to draw attention to things like world hunger and the plight of prisoners around the globe I don't see a damn thing the matter with it. I think the reunion is a "big deal" because The Police were one of the most successful bands of the late 70s and early 80s and rightfully so, their music stood out because it was very pioneering and innovative for it's time. None of that has a damn thing to do with "liberal causes". ...and we all know how reliable reviews are. That said, Stewart Copeland even slammed their Bonnaroo appearance last year but the shows have vastlly improved since then. I can speak from my own personal experience having seen them in Charlotte last year. Even though Sting was suffering from the flu and had to cancel a Philly show just a few nights before they still put on a hell of a good show.
  17. It's funny how the newer generation complains about missing out on stuff like Woodstock and the big festivals of the time but they find camping out at Bonnaroo to be "dirty". Well, I've never been to Bonnaroo but I have been to my fair share of festivals over the years. Yes, there are hotels near Bonnaroo but camping is also a huge part of the experience.
  18. I don't but that's also a "to each their own" type of thing. They're definitely one of my favorite bands though.
  19. Thanks. The Truckes album is 19 songs so it's quite a bit to absorb all at once. As for the Garcia, it's the expanded version of Compliments from the All Good Things box. Lots of bonus cuts on here that make this album very much worth it's while.
  20. No one was even comparing the two, well, until this post. But "best band ever"? Can't say I agree with that but to each their own.
  21. Saved it from what? I love British rock but I don't think it saved rock n' roll from anything.
  22. This, also from TMZ.com: According to website TMZ.com, the cancellation has been blamed on guitarist Van Halen's poor performances, after he turned up for several gigs apparently intoxicated.
  23. This is the Other Bands / Music section of the board meaning you can post about other bands here. As for Jagger being an "ugly fuck corporate poser". How soon we forget Zeppelin and Plant have allowed their songs to be used for corporate gain. The latest being that JC Penney commercial featuring Plant and Krauss' cover of Killin' the Blues.
