  1. You're in for a real treat, especially since I believe he's still doing his Theatre of Death tour or is this with Rob Zombie? Tonight:
  2. Well, it was at a flea market so that's why I got such a good deal. The vinyl itself was pretty beat up but doesn't skip so that was worth it to me. One of my older brothers had this on cassette back in the early 70s. He belonged to the Columbia House Record and Tape club so they were always sending him all kinds of new music. When our family took a trip to Europe in 1972, this is one of the albums he took with him. One of the others was Led Zeppelin IV which came on an orange cassette. I've also seen yellow and plain copies of that record so I'm not sure if was a Columbia House thing or not.
  3. I first heard it on Dr. Demento's radio show back in the 70s. It was such a rarity that I really didn't know that much about it until the advent of the innerwebz.
  4. While thumbing through a stack of bargain priced books at Borders recently I stumbled upon this one called Revolutions In Sound: Warner Bros. Records The First 50 Years. It should be of interest to most everyone here, especially for their entry on Black Sabbath. It was well worth the $5.99 price tag (it normally sells for $40). I didn't realize until checking out their website that it also comes in two other configurations: The Ultimate Boxset and a Booklet with a 10 CD Bundle. They are much more pricey but I'm sure they're also well worth the investment. Used copies of the book itself and the other versions can found for very reasonable prices at Amazon.com.
  5. I'm glad they kept the artwork true to the original (thank you Rhino). I found my copy on vinyl at a flea market in Denver for around 75¢ back in 1979. Of course, in the years since they've released nearly every performance from Woodstock so it kind of makes this one (and the second release) obsolete but it would still be worth having just for old times sake.
  6. On the Zeppelin tip, apologies in advance if this one has already been posted.
  7. I think I saw most every installment of it and enjoyed it as well even though I'm not a huge metal fan.
  8. Another clip from Neil's new Le Noise record:
  9. And controversial names such as Donna Summer, Chic, Run DMC, LL Cool J, etc. In the cases of Skynyrd and Sabbath, they were nominated several times before actually being inducted. I really didn't see any need in that. If I'm not mistaken, Kiss hasn't even been nominated yet (nor have Purple, Yes or Rush) and this is the first time Alice has been nominated. I really don't see any need in that either. If they're worthy, induct them already.
  10. For those that may have missed it when it originally aired (and it's many subsequent airings), this is well worth your viewing time. VH1 Classic seldom does anything worth tuning in for but with this series (Heavy: The Story of Metal) they knocked it out of the ballpark. It just goes to show they can offer up quality programming when they really set their minds to it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lea-l1q8Nho
  11. No matter how much of a joke the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame has become, it's still an honor and that's how Alice has responded. If you haven't done so already, check the Rock n' Roll of Fame thread or the News section of Alice's website for his reaction.
  12. Has anyone had any luck locating a copy of Alice's Theatre of Death DVD/CD which was supposed to be released yesterday? I have checked around at all the local stores (big box and otherwise) but no one has it in stock.
  13. Does anyone know if there's a way to embed clips that aren't on YouTube? This one is on Vimeo. Gayngs are a collective of several bands including Megafaun, the Rosebuds, Bon Iver, etc. This is their take on The Alan Parsons Project's "Eye In the Sky": Gayngs "Eye In the Sky"
  14. It was cut during the making of the Drive-By Truckers' last record, The Big To-Do. There was never any intention of it being officially released but all of the other members of the band (besides Cooley, who takes the lead on this particular cut) insisted it come out in one form or another so they made it available to fans as a special release for Record Store Day last April. They're also using it as their intro music on their current tour. Here's another funny, R.E.M. as "Bingo Handjob" (with Billy Bragg as the human beatbox) doing Tom's Diner by Suzanne Vega:
  15. I was never the world's biggest Pantera fan but I've always liked their version of this song.
  16. From showbizspy.com: Neil Young Refuses To Play With A Band Again NEIL Young doubts he’ll ever work with a band again. The rocker — whose closest collaborators, filmmaker Larry “L.A.” Johnson and multi-instrumentalist and producer Ben Keith, died in the last nine months — says he’ll perform the majority of his material as a solo act. “There is about 70 percent of my repertoire that I will never do again with a band,” Young told the Chicago Tribune newspaper. “There is no sense in trying to redo what was already great. There’s no payoff in that. That’s not what I’m about. “I’m thankful to have known Ben and played with him for 40 years. He was one of my best friends and I miss him very much. I don’t see myself playing those songs with a band in the future. I can play them by myself, but I can’t play them with a band. “I just don’t think I could handle it. I don’t know anybody who can do what he did. It closes a door on a period of my life, and it also opens up a giant space for me to be creative in the future.” Young then discussed solo acoustic album Le Noise, which is due out Sept. 28. “It’s folk-metal,” he says with a laugh. “We got this sound on the guitar that was very exciting to us. There’s the singularity of a folk performance on the guitar, but with a heavy-metal civilization of sound around it.”
  17. Todd Snider's paen to the day Dock Ellis pitched a no hitter while tripping on LSD.
  18. It's been years since I saw them last (mid-90s perhaps?) but at my previous Black Crowes show, Chris Robinson was getting pretty upset with someone in the audience that was shining one of those lazer penlights at him. I can only imagine they just don't want people filming (which is very hard to determine, particularly with modern cameras) and/or flashes going off left and right. The bottom line is, unless they pat everyone down and remove their cellphones, fans will still be taking photos and filming their shows. While I do respect their wishes, there's really nothing they can do about it.
  19. Just saw Bobby Bare, Jr. and Blue Giant at the Local 506 in Chapel Hill last night. Blue Giant also served as his backing band. Just stumbled upon this clip of the Black Crowes from last Friday's show in Raleigh where there was supposedly a strict "no cameras" policy in effect by request of the band:
  20. There's no telling. Costello may have even changed his viewpoint since then. Back in those days he made a quite a few comments that he later regretted (including the infamous James Brown/Ray Charles episode involving Bonnie Bramlett). From his angry punk days (circa SNL) I would have never guessed he was an avid Deadhead. This was confirmed with his contribution (Ship of Fools) to the Grateful Dead tribute record, Deadicated.
  21. Two from Bobby Bare, Jr. the first is his latest record, the second is an EP of songs by America and Bread.
  22. Bobby Bare, Jr. playing a cut from his new record, A Storm - A Tree - My Mother's Head. In 2008 a storm brought a tree down on the Bare family home, with Bobby Bare, Jr.'s Mom inside. Within a year, and after two broken vertebrae, his mother and the family home recovered and Bobby got a song out of the tragedy as well as the title of his new album.
