Two-set shows and two-gig days

What was the deal with the early dates when they played 2 different sets?

Were these separate shows for two different audiences? Or were they basically 'parts 1 and 2' of one gig played to the same audience, with an intermission in the middle? How long would the intermission last, and what would take place - jugglers, puppet shows, fire-eaters etc? Orgies?? Or just polite conversation?

Would LZ have been the headliner at these 2-set shows?

Also, there are a few dates when they played 2 full sets, for example 18.8.69 and 19.9.70. Why did they do this at all (compared to the 2-set shows above), why would they have done this as late as Sep 70, and roughly how many times did this happen?

I would presume two different sets for two different audiences because some of the dates are at seperate venues. My band plays a afternoon & evening show occasionally, haul all our shit around and knock out two shows and get paid twice, makes sense to me.

But whenever I see these shows, it usually states 'afternoon' and 'evening' sets or shows, so would make sense that it is two different audiences yes.

They only did the two-sets-at-two-different-venues-in-the-same-day thing a few times, in Sweden in 1969 I believe. All other places were two shows played at the same venue. When they played the Boston Tea Party and the Fillmore West, the show was two sets to the same audience, with a break in between. The Fillmore East, the Rockpile, and the 1970 gigs in Hawaii and New York were all done to two separate audiences at an early and late show.

And how bizarre that is, btw, to play two gigs in one day at Madison Square Garden?! I can see at a club, or even Winterland or something, but if your playing the Garden and demand is that high, you would normally do two nights. I can't think of any other band that's done that. Must've been a hastily added show or something.

They did several 2 show gigs in 69 and 70. Some of them weren't recorded. I'm guessing about 10 maybe more.
