Kilian L
I have been wondering about this for some time and couldn't find any information about it so I'll ask here. Does anyone know what Jimmy did to achieve the tone on the intro riff to Celebration Day on the studio version? I'm thinking specifically about the descending open string riff directly after the high chord. You can hear it much clearer on the Alternate Mix included on the 2014 companion disc: http://youtu.be/EA8Ia-iXPkw You can clearly hear a deeper octave doubling the riff. Did Jimmy use an octave splitter or did he just get JPJ to double the riff on a bass? It somehow sounds more "elastic" than a bass. I've even heard people suggest Jimmy doubled it himself on a six string bass but I'm not aware of him ever using one before or since. badgeholder
Didn't JPJ play pedal steel on it?

jsj
JPJ plays a main riff on this song. Whether it’s the actual bit you’re referring to I don’t know
Administrators sam_webmaster Posted October 15, 2020 Administrators Share Posted October 15, 2020 If I remember correctly, JPJ said it was a Danelectro bass on his lap, using a slide.

I do remember Jones mentioning something like that.
Mithril46
One more tip of the hat to Jones. As the years go by, more and more amazing Zep parts actually came from Jones. Page sounds cool on the live version opening anyway, but facts are facts.
