The only thing I am sure, is that she [is she right? ] worked with Led Zep.. But..

In what way she collaborated with them?

Who exactly was SandyDenny.. And why she made her own sign?

She was the second lead singer of Fairport Convention, left Fairport to form her own band, Fotheringay , along with her boyfriend , and then went on to a solo career. She died in 1978 (?) of a cerebral hemmorhage after falling down a flight of stairs. It was speculated that her drug and alcohol addiction might have lead to the fall, but I think the family was pretty adept at covering that up.

She was also the only outside musician to work with Zeppelin on an album. The story goes (at least the ones I've heard) is that she found Pageys perfectionist more than alittle frustrating wrt recording TBOE, so as a reward for her patience and hard work, she too was given a symbol on the album.

Tell that to Ian "Boogie with Stu" Stuart, or the guy who played tabla on the first album, or the string section that did Kashmir... ;)

Fairport bassist Dave Pegg is an old friend of Plant & Bonham from the midlands music scene, so there was a personal link between the bands as well as musical admiration.

Fairport recorded a live album in LA at a gig attended by members of Zep & there was some jamming & messing around, but IIRC it didn't make the album.

Fairport host an annual music festival at Cropredy in Oxfordshire, which Plant has appeared at a couple of times.

Totally forgot about Ian Stewart. I didn't even know about the guy who played tabla on the first album. I just assumed it was Jonesy.

Some facts for other Sandy Denny fans here,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Dear all,

the other day I was reading Harry Shapiro's 1999 book 'Waiting for the Man.

The Story of Drugs and Popular Music' (excellent book btw!) and was very

surprised to see an advertisement for Pam Winters' biography in it. There

was a small picture (3x4,5cm) of the intended cover and the following text:

'Solo: A Biography of Sandy Denny by Pamela Winters. Due in August 256 pages

ISBN 1-900924 11 0

Sandy Denny became famous as the distinctive singer of Fairport Convention,

and later with Fotheringay, as well as releasing four highly acclaimed solo

albums. Melody Maker voted her best female singer in 1970 and 1971. But like

many of the great musical artists of the seventies, she took refuge in drink

and drugs. Sandy Denny died 20 years ago in mysterious circumstances, and

this is the first ever Biography. US music journalist Pam Winters has had

unprecedented access to Sandy's personal papers. She has interviewed at

length all those who were close to her, to produce an illuminating portrait

of one of the great English singers.'

note: the ISBN is the same as Heylin's book; the intended cover is an

outtake from the North Star cover photo sessions.

best wishes

Jaap

Here's some other SD info (Plant mentiion........!)......

A Little Bit More 'Zep.

Plant has given a slew of interviews about his collaboration with Alison

Krauss. I was looking around to see if he ever mentioned Sandy in any of

them and found this from The Age (a Melbourne paper?) on 30 November:

"I could tell by [Alison's] intonation and by the choices of material

that I was exposed to that there was common ground," he says.

"A lot of the material that she may have leant upon wouldn't be a

million miles away from the stuff that (English folk-rock pioneer) Sandy

Denny was playing me years ago, some of the more traditional, archaic

British folk music."

On an unrelated matter: there was a horse called "Sandy Denny" running

in the 3.40 at Ludlow yesterday. Now if I were a betting man...

behind a CD name means Bootleg. In that case, no legal releases are

known (on CD). Unique means that I don't know of anywhere else this

performance is released, just on one of these cassettes. The 4 Sandy CD's

are the recently released remastered versions with bonus tracks. In most

cases the recordings here are part of these bonus tracks.

Onderwerp: RE: [sandyDennyList] Re: Sandy Denny - The Attic Tracks - Vol. 1

(cassette)

The First Cassette is probably no longer available. The last information I

have is, that only Vol. 2,3 & 4 are still available. The Sandy recordings on

Vol. 2 and 4 are available elsewhere, if I remember correctly. Vol. 3 is

only Trevor Lucas, with no Sandy content. This, and the TL content on Vol. 2

is generally unavailable elsewhere, except for a few songs on the CD

anthology.

Vol. 1 is a different thing. It is a collection of recordings found in the

attic where a lot of Sandy and Trevor's recordings were stored. It includes

a few recordings also available on the CD, some outtakes only available on

this tape, and a few singles, one from Jerry Donohue, and some with Sandy

covers.

The tracks that are unavailable elsewhere from this Vol.1 are high on my

list of must haves, even though I have a quite comprehensive "Sandy"

collection. Vol. 2,3 & 4 have been marked as "nice if you can find them, but

don't lose any sleep over them.

This all off the top of my head. Exact details can be provided monday

evening when I have access to my database again.

Regards,

Henk Vasmel

Since the connection in the weekend didn't allow my posting to the list, I

can try again now and add some detail:

Attic Tracks 1 contains "Full Moon" and two versions of "All Our Days", that

I don't have yet. Other Sandy, TL and FC recordings have been officially

released. There is a "You Never Know", by Charlie Drake (with Sandy ?),

Lonnie Donegan and Judy Collins both covering WKWTTG, Keith Cross/Peter Ross

with "Peace In The End" and both sides from a Jerry Donahue single, "Theme

From Catlow"/"Luisa"

Attic Tracks 2 is a Trevor Lucas Concert from October 1984. 17 songs, of

which 15 are otherwise unavailable, and 2 are on the Attic Tracks CD, "The

Town I Loved So Well" and "Forever Young"

Attic Tracks 3 is Interesting Sandy stuff, two thirds of it officially

released. The other 8 songs generally available on bootlegs. It is early

demo's and part of the concert that is on "Gold Dust"

Attic Tracks 4 is one side (13 songs) Trevor Lucas and the other side (13

songs) Sandy. Of Sandy's songs, 8 are officially released, the other five

are available on Bootlegs.

If we concentrate on the Sandy Songs, there would be just enough to fill one

CD if we select only those songs that are not available officially.

Regards again,

Henk Vasmel
