I have been looking for a Sola Sound Tonebender for quite some time now. I have always thought that good things never die, because they are always reissued and reproduced, etc. I was surfing some music websites and found that Sola Sound changed its name to ColorSound a while back. After a quick search I found some Tonebenders on sale. Here is the link.

As I am a complete noob when it comes to posting links I will leave that up to you to copy and paste it into the url.

Theres not a lot of info on these and I cant find a website for the ColorSound brand name.

Anyone know if these are the real deal? Anyone have one of these or even a real one? Some pics would be appreciated.

It looks like my Coloursound Tonebender that I bought in the mid 1970's. I paid £16 for mine - based on average earnings increases in the UK that is now £152 ($222 US at current exchange rates). The circuit board is very similar, with through-hole technology, rather than surface mount components, so they are trying to be accurate with parts and build. These things are battery powered, and the switch used to be noisy (loud clunk) when turning the device on (but hey, that's part of the charm with old technology).

I only used it for live work for a short period - around 18 months or so, but it did stand up to an astonishing amount of punishment during that time. It sometimes sees the light of day for recording, but other than that it remains in retirement. Give me the sound of a hot bottle, anyday.

Thanks. The small exerpts say that it is made by the guy who used to make them's kids, And that they still use the same parts, as well as press to stamp the steel for the box. Other than that I cant find anything. I hope its the real deal.

It is NOT the real deal. IC chips do not get the germainium transistor sound like the original Tonebenders. Here are two pedals in know use real OC75 transistors:

If you want clones of the Tonebender (the original will cost you probably $1,000 +) the two that I recommend are the DAM MKII Professional. You can get it with OC81D transistors too.

The DAM is pretty costly too though, and VERY hard to find now. SO if you are handy with a soldering gun, or know someone who is, check out the BYOC MKII.

It is awesome. I have one and it plays beautifully. People say the similarities to the original tonebender is right on. And its relatively cheap to get one.

It comes with real OC75s.

I've been searching for a good mkII Tonebender (-clone) for quite some time now, but it's a little scary to build one from scratch...

How hard is it to make the one from that byoc site?

Do you need to know your way around electricity, or is it nothing more than soldering the components?

I have little knowledge when it comes to electricity...

But I am willing to give it a shot!

Thx!!
