It seems perhaps they were merely engaging in damage control to their image in Florida, which has the highest number of convictions based on corruption. Bob Crane, for instance, was one person who became involved with dangerous people and was at one time connected to porn. Porn draws people into that grey area of life sometimes. They probably saw the issue of his porn-star wife as a potential hot potato in terms of public relations. The city officials are not necessarily uptight about sex, but they may want to maintain a sense of decorum that does not encourage others to think they may be corrupt and warrant an investigation. They are trying to present a wholesome image to the public they serve perhaps mainly because they do not want to seem corrupt in any way. In trying to seem honest to the public, the city may wish to avoid seeming risque in any way, perhaps overcompensating for the environment of corruption for which Florida is somewhat known. In a sense their public relations message is, Florida may be corrupt but our city is not, so we do not employ anyone with a family member who may be engaged in porn to run our city.
