  1. My name is Strider, veteran of the Badgeholder shows at the Forum, and I approve of this choice of concerts. By the way, Kiwi, that's me in the crowd screaming his head off...no, not THAT guy. I'm one of the other 18,000 screaming. Not sure where you heard that but I think you have your stories mixed up. The information I've always received is that the 1973 Southampton concert was originally going to be the concert released in conjunction with the DVD in 2003. Then Page discovered the 1972 Forum and Long Beach multitracks, and that became the HTWWW cd release that was paired with the DVD release. The Southampton concert occurred long before the band even thought about filming the 1973 tour making The Song Remains the Same, so that story doesn't even make sense from a chronological standpoint. If I'm wrong, I expect Sam or SAJ will be along shortly to correct me.
  2. Really? No concert in almost a year? You must be married with children or you really do live in Bron-Yr-Aur. Please...go out and see a show...any concert will do. I'd hate for your last concert memory to be Ace Frehley.
  3. Friday, Oct. 21: Miranda Lee Richards, Sara Melson, Tom Freund, and Nicole Ema Every at the Besant Lodge, in Beachwood Canyon, Hollywood. I was just telling a friend the other day, that when you live in Los Angeles, it helps to be flexible, as your schedule can change on a whim. Originally, I was planning to attend the LA premiere of 50th anniversary brand new digital restoration of "The Guns of Navarone" at the American Cinematheque's Egyptian Theatre. Then, yesterday morning I checked some e-mails that I hadn't read yet...and read this one from Miranda Lee Richards: SONGWRITER IN THE ROUND SHOWCASE Hello Everyone, I am pleased to announce I will be performing this Friday, October 21st, as part of a songwriter in the round showcase at the beautiful historic Besant Lodge in Beachwood Canyon. This will be a great opportunity to try out ALL NEW MATERIAL in an intimate setting, alongside some other very talented, and not to be missed songwriters! This show will most likely be my first (and possibly only) Los Angeles performance for the rest of the year, while I continue my live show hiatus in order to complete the recording of my next album, due out 2012. I am incredibly grateful for the chance to perform NEW MUSIC for you all again, it's been a while! Wine and refreshments served, suggested donation $10, 8pm. LINE UP: Miranda Lee Richards Sara Melson Leslie Stevens Nicole Ema Every Tom Freund Scratch the movie, I am heading up Beachwood Canyon drive. The Besant Lodge(http://www.gnosis.org/gnostsoc/besant.html) is an old tiny place with an interesting history(Theosophical Society, silent movie theatre), that sits on Beachwood just under the Hollywood sign. There were maybe 50 people and since I was sitting in the first row, I was maybe three feet from the performers. Leslie Stevens couldn't make it, but Miranda, Nicole, Tom and Sara were more than enough entertainment. Each was lined up alongside each other, from left to right: Miranda, Nicole, Tom and Sara. Each played an acoustic guitar, or used the piano to their left. Miranda would play a song, then Nicole and so on. That went for three rounds, then there was a food-and-wine break and much mingling, then back for another couple rounds of songs. In total, each played 5 songs for a total of 20. I had never seen Tom Freund before, and he was great with an amusing way about him, very charming and idiosyncratic. Sara and Nicole each had their moments as well. But it was primarily Miranda Lee Richards I had come to see, being entranced by her ever since seeing her with the Brian Jonestown Massacre back in the 90s. Then her first album "Herethereafter" further bewitched me, and I've been besotted ever since. She did not disappoint. What was really great about last night was that of the 5 songs she sang, 4 of them were brand-spanking new, as she is in the midst of recording her new album, hopefully to be released in 2012. She has 40 to 50 songs accumulated, and is in the process of figuring which ones will make the cut for the record. I can only hope the ones she played last night are among them, especially one called "Shelter", a long hypnotic gem of a song. In fact, given the quality of the new songs, I can hardly wait to hear the new album! The light was pretty low in the room, and I still have to go through and see if the video I took with my phone came out(I tried it at Portishead and it came out horrible-sounding), but I'll try to post some suitable pics later. Bonus treat: meeting Miranda's charming mother, Teresa.
  4. I don't know why all of a sudden your post suddenly went tiny...it wasn't like that before the change. To add to my earlier answer to your question, if I said it was worth getting the album just for "One Sunday Morning", then I will add that it is also worth getting the deluxe edition just for "Message from Mid-Bar". Dewey, we're still waiting for your report on the St. Louis show. How was it? Was the setlist similar the great one played in Raleigh that Jahfin posted? Meanwhile, Wilco have finally gotten around to announcing the West Coast dates, as well as other dates upcoming late-2011 into 2012. Wilco hits LA January 24, at the Hollywood Palladium. There's a big gap of open dates between LA and the next city, so they'll probably be adding more Palladium shows as the first one will sell out instantaneously. 5. ^^^Because your sister would be alone and miserable if you didn't...and you would regret not going for the rest of your life. Maybe not now...but later. Bon voyage, kid!
  6. Portishead! PORTIS-Fucking-HEAD!!! They made me very happy tonight.
  7. Just saw the magnificent Portishead at the Shrine Auditorium and Expo Hall, right across from the USC campus near downtown Los Angeles. It was fookin' ace, mates! While waiting to get in(it was general admission so first come first serve as far as getting close to the stage), we heard both Portishead and the USC band soundchecking. Will post more another time, including photos...but here's the setlist as best as I recall: 1. Silence 2. Nylon Smile 3. Mysterons 4. The Rip 5. Sour Times 6. Magic Doors 7. Wandering Star 8. Machine Gun 9. Over 10. Glory Box 11. Chase the Tear 12. Cowboys 13. Threads Encore: 14. Roads 15. We Carry On Practically a flawless setlist...except I probably would have preferred Hunter and Plastic from the "Third" album in place of Nylon Smile and We Carry On. It would have been sweet if they could have fit in Humming, as well. But that's nitpicking...at least they're playing my town for 2 nights. Poor souls in the south get nada. Closest Portishead is getting to the south on this tour is Denver. Then they hit Australia in November. Preetha, if you're reading this(and any other members Down Under), I highly suggest you try to get tickets.
  8. I see you Julie! Bella bella! I've noticed, though, that which picture shows up depends on what setting you have the board on. If you have the board set on lz_bias, then your avatar photo will appear with your posts. But if it's on IP.Board Mobile then instead of your avatar photo appearing, it will be your personal profile photo. So check to see what setting you have the board set on. Hope this helps.
  9. PORTISHEAD, the pride of Bristol, is playing the Shrine Auditorium Oct. 18 & 19!!! Portishead's last album "Third" was a stunning return for the band, one of my top-10's of 2008, and worth the 11-year wait. But unfortunately they didn't really "tour" in support of the album. Aside from a few scattered dates, the Coachella festival was the only time they played America. Now they are finally back in LA for two proper shows at the ancient Shrine Auditorium...Portishead is best heard in a small hall, not a gigantic open-air festival. Given that Portishead tours about as often as a politician tells the truth, I might just go to both the Tuesday and Wednesday shows, so as to get enough Portishead to get me through the next dry spell. Beth Gibbons is a wonder.
  10. Portishead is coming to town this week! So I'm busting out the "Third" album right now...awesome as ever.
  11. More pics from the 10-13-11 Foo Fighters at the LA Forum.
  12. Saw the Foo Fighters concert at the LA Forum last night(Thursday Oct. 13)...they're playing 2 nights at the Forum, tonight(Friday Oct. 14) being the second. Say what you want about the Foos, but I gotta give props to a band with enough awareness of musical history of LA to bypass the Staples Center and play the Fabulous Forum, beloved site of many rock concerts and LA Lakers NBA championship seasons! My first Foo Fighters shows were in 1995, when they played the Roxy and the Freemason theatre in Hollywood with Mike Watt when the first Foo album came out...only Dave and Pat Smear is left from that Foo Fighters lineup. Those shows were explosive...in my mind they were better than the last Nirvana cconcert I saw. I also enjoyed that first Foo Fighters record. Also liked the second one, "The Colour, The Shape...". But when Pat Smear left, I was bummed...and then the subsequent albums sort of left me underwhelmed. They were okay...but there didn't seem to be anything ESSENTIAL about them. Fast forward to now, and by dint of the fact that they've ENDURED for so long and their nice-guy persona, they've become massively popular without really having a massively popular album or radio hit. This is the second time they've played 2 nights at the Forum. They're kind of like AC/DC in a way...you know what you're going to get with them. There are no wildly divergent style changes with their albums and they put on loud, high energy concerts. Actually, if it wasn't for the fact that my 16-year-old godson really wanted to see them, as well as his dad, I probably wouldn't have bothered to go to these Forum shows. Since my friend had to work, and the kid was in school, I had the task of procuring tickets yesterday in my usual fashion...get to the Forum box office early and wait for releases. At first I thought about getting GA floor tix, but with the kid and my friend, I figured they wouldn't want to have to stand and be squished for the entire show, so I got tix right behind the stage, where we could sit and relax and watch the show with no hassle. There were two opening bands...the first being El Mariachi Bronx or something(we missed them) and then Cage the Elephant, whose singer has a most annoying voice. I didn't recognize any of their songs, but my godson did...guess they're popular with the kids. Cage was done at 8:35, and my godson was entertained by watching the roadies set up the Foo's stage and check the instruments. At 9:01pm, the lights went dark and the Foo Fighters took the stage. They would not leave it until 11:47pm, nearly 3 hours later! It's the same 3-guitar lineup they've had for the past few years, as well as an occasional keyboardist, who also played an accordion during one song. Always good to see Pat Smear, who I recall from the Germs. Taylor Hawkins gets a lot of flack from other drummers I hear, and while he's no Dave Grohl, he's fun to watch in his own way. The guy is skinny and wirey as hell. I saw him last week at the Jane's Addiction show and it's funny how much older he looks in person. They played a shitload of songs...I didn't keep a setlist...lots from the new album, and Fee Waybill from old SF band The Tubes, came out and sang backing vocals on the song he sang on from the new album. Everlong, Hero, and Learn to Fly of course were played. But only one song from the first record: This Is the Call. No X-static or Floaty unfortunately. An amusing moment came when Dave introduced the band and asked each member what their first Forum concert was. Rush was one answer...Quiet Riot & Whitesnake was another. But the winner was Pat Smear, who saw the Rolling Stones and Stevie Wonder in 1972. Dave had a Prince moment during the show and mentioned the 21-night stand Prince played at the Forum back in April-May of this year. They also played at least two covers that were astoundingly good: Pink Floyd's "In the Flesh" w/ Taylor Hawkins singing(the sound of all three guitars playing the riff was scintillating) and Tom Petty's "Breakdown"! My godson loves Tom Petty...in fact, his favourite concert so far was seeing Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers at the Hollywood Bowl a few years ago...so he lost his mind when the Foos broke into "Breakdown". His favourite moment of the night, he told me afterward. After a main set of exactly 2 hours, the Foos came back and did a 7-song encore lasting about 40-45 minutes. Actually, at first only Dave came back, rising from a mini stage by the soundboard, acoustic guitar in hand. He did 3 acoustic songs, although he still sang them mostly in that gutteral growl he does...I don't see how he can sing night after night screaming like he does at his age. Then the rest of the band came back and they built to a rousing finish, with Everlong being the final song. One little tidbit...during the preshow music before the Foo Fighters took the stage, Rush was played twice...in fact, Limelight was the last song played before the Foos took the stage. I'm probably forgetting something...but right now, I just want to post some of the photos I took with my lousy cellphone. So don't expect Neal Peston-quality, haha. These first ones are at the moment the lights went dark and the band was taking the stage.
  13. I notice you changed your avatar...yeah, nothing gets past these eagle eyes, haha. I LOVE IT! Sehr schön!

  14. Reminds me of the porcupines we have here in North America.
  15. What in tarnations is an ECHIDNA?
  16. With special guest Strider. Actually, due to an emergency(not me, but a friend), I won't be making this concert after all. This is the third time in the last year I've had to miss Jason Bonham's LZE due to a medical issue. I guess it just isn't meant to be.
  17. There is a Forum Wall of Fame...sadly, no Led Zeppelin. Or Prince for that matter. Time for a look inside the venue... Does this angle ring a bell...say remind you of March 27, 1970?
  18. While at the Forum of Inglewood(LA Forum, Great Western Forum, etc.) yesterday for the Foo Fighters concert, I snapped some photos for this thread. It's from a cellphone camera, so excuse the quality...or lack thereof. The intersection of Prairie & Manchester in Inglewood. The Forum from the southeast corner of the parking lot looking northwest. The Forum Club entrance, where Jack Nicholson and other club members would hang out before Laker games and concerts. The 1998-1999 season was the last season the Los Angeles Lakers played at the Forum. The tunnel entrance to under the Forum. This is where the band would enter and exit the Forum. Kids would line up here before and after concerts watching the limos come and go. In fact, if you wanted to see them leave, you had to leave the concert during the encore or else they'd be gone from the Forum before you could get outside from your seat. More to come...
  19. Awww, Magic you are too kind. Coming from a writer like yourself, your praise is too much...and you are totally so worthy. Don't sweat missing this post either...that's the beauty of this site. It acts as a repository for all of the memories of us Zeppelin vets like the Rover, Hotplant, MadScreamingGallery, badgeholder, Knebby and the like, and whether someone reads them as they are posted or not until years later, it'll be there lurking waiting for some unsuspecting soul to come along and discover it. Heck, I didn't discover Knebby's fantastic "Entourage" thread until recently.
  20. ^^^Speaking of Inglewood, it's just past midnight and the Foo Fighters concert at the Forum has just ended...a nearly 3-hour show. We're sitting in a snarl of traffic in the Forum parking lot now. John, the comment Plant makes comes after SIBLY...somes versions I've got of "Listen to this, Eddie" cut this comment. Plant's introduction of Bonzo at this show was the greatest ever...hilarious. What a fantastic start to the summer of '77 the Forum concerts were!
