  1. As I said, I haven't seen their performance, nor am a devout fan but they belong in the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame because they were one of many artists that have been influential not only to punk rock but rock n' roll in general. Then again, you also have to consider this is the same place that inducted Madonna as a member. The Stooges most definitely belong, McDonna doesn't.
  2. Can't say that I agree. There are video games for most everything these days, have racing games replaced actual racing? I didn't think so. Same for Guitar Hero and music. People make far too much of Guitar Hero, Rockband, etc. being a bad influence on rock n' roll. I fail to understand why.
  3. I didn't see the performance, nor am I much of a fan of either the Stooges or Pop but they belong in the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame without a doubt.
  4. Seems so many folks here tend to discount the 80s which isn't surprising since they're usually the same ones that believe nothing can surpass music that was made during the 60s & 70s. Those that live in the past are doomed to repeat it. I'd prefer to be challenged than forever be confined to my comfort zone.
  5. Everything "blew" in the 80s? There were plenty of artists who didn't fit the very narrow mold you describe. One of the biggest misconceptions about the 80s is that every song was marred by drum machines, synthesizers and the performers were all about putting style above substance due to the evils of MTV. Not true. There are so many exceptions to this it would be impossible to name them all but a few would be Stevie Ray Vaughan & Double Trouble, X, R.E.M., the Replacements, U2, Los Lobos, John Prine, John Hiatt, The Cure, etc.
  6. Yes, I have. I've sung the praises of Sleepless here many times. It's a great, great record. Not sure if those credits are correct for Nothing But the Wheel, I thought it was Mick and Keith. I had no idea Waylon played on the album. There's another cool version of Nothing But the Wheel on Jim Miller's (formerly of Donna the Buffalo) Herd I'm Drinkin' album.
  7. Heard Peter Wolf's new single yet? If not, by all means take just a couple minutes and check it out here.
  8. Wouldn't this be tantamount to not allowing a 45 rpm single to be released?
  9. Great movie for those that haven't seen it yet.
  10. Props to the Drive-By Truckers for scoring the opening gig for several of Tom Petty's upcoming dates: http://drivebytruckers.com/tourdates.html
  11. There's so many omissions to that list I'm not even sure where to start but one would definitely be Little Feat's Waitin' For Columbus.
  12. Used copies of the deluxe edition are already in circulation?
  13. The Stones continue to tour and record so you still have a chance.
  14. The "voice of her generation" thing is merely damage control (as ill-conceived as it is). What I'm referring to is the popularity of teen idols, that is nothing new. Not to mention, no one I've heard of has ever wanted the mantle of "voice of a generation" thrust upon them. That goes for everyone from Bob Dylan to Kurt Cobain and Taylor Swift.
  15. The popularity of teen artists such as Taylor Swift is nothing new so it doesn't speak to the state of "current culture" at all.
  16. I'm not sure if "fraud" is entirely accurate. It's not as though she was caught using AutoTune (pitch correction software) or lip synching. The music industry is full of "artists" that employ both on a regular basis. The reason it's so widespread is because it's come to be accepted as the norm.
  17. I just never understood the "too country" tag as it doesn't make any sense to me. I've never heard anyone say "that's too rock n' roll", or "that's too jazzy", etc. While I believe some Reba's early stuff is pretty rootsy she has also had her fair share of crossover stuff. Personally, if I'm going to listen to country music I prefer to listen to the real deal, i.e. Cash, Lynn, George Jones, Tom T. Hall, Bob Wills, Ernest Tubb, etc.
  18. Years ago I saw a documentary on the making of Fleetwood Mac's Tusk. One scene showed Stevie in the studio laying down her vocal tracks. Since the track was isolated you could hear only Stevie's voice and quite frankly it sounded horrible. I'm a longtime fan but I learned then that they must have been employing some studio wizardry to clean up the sound of her voice.
  19. Your thoughts on Loretta Lynn? She's country.
  20. Perhaps but the 80s did have Live Aid, USA for Africa and Amnesty International's Conspiracy of Hope tour. Of course, the role model for most of those projects were the huge festivals of the 60s and 70s. Personally I don't rank one decade as being musically superior over the other, each has their own qualities good and bad, including the much revered 60s and 70s. As for That Metal Show, the spectrum of discussion is just wide enough to interest me. If it were the least bit narrow I probably wouldn't be a very avid viewer. As it stands, I try to catch the show whenever it's on.
  21. Since when have sales figures been indicative of talent? Each generation has their own teen idols, it is nothing new.
  22. Perhaps but I still don't get how that lessens Pink Floyd's overall musicianship. [quote name='lzzoso' date='21 January 2010 - 09:03 AM' timestamp='1264082610' pWhen the Late Great John Henry "Bonzo" Bonham tragically passed away, Jimmy Page, Robert Plant, John Paul Jones and Peter Grant had the dignity to (unfortunately) end Led Zeppelin with "Honor" and "Respect".
  23. Yeah, I believe they appeared with Booker T. as "Booker T. & the DBTs". I never have been but I've always wanted to. Hope you're feeling shipshape enough to attend come festival time.
  24. First of all, Dave Mason was never a member of Pink Floyd. Secondly, you seem to be trying to make the case that Pink Floyd can't possibly be superior musicians to Rush or Aerosmith simply because you feel no one can name the latter day members of the band. Needless to say that's a very weak argument. Speaking of which, it's completely futile to pit artists against one another in the first place, hypothetically or otherwise.
