  1. No. It played a few songs that I sort of recognized but don't really know. It did play "I Love Rock and Roll." I had a lot of fun with her. She's high school aged--I was at a high school--but she was profoundly affected by (what I'm guessing) Down's Syndrome. She was really sweet. I left my business card with the teacher because I really liked working in that classroom. What made me happy today: 1. I finally got my butt outside to trim down the NINE rose bushes that line our front walkway. I cleaned up the front flower beds and got rid of all the dead stuff. I still have a lot of work to do for "spring cleaning," but I've made progress! I meant to do this on Saturday, and my boyfriend was supposed to help, but he got tied up in something else. Then we were going to do it on Sunday, but it rained all freakin' day. I had three garbage cans full of rose bush clippings and two full of misc. leaves that were in the flowerbeds and the front yard when I was done. My front yard is really small, so i was a bit amazed to see that much stuff! It was terrible last fall--it was pretty warm until about December, then everything froze. The rose bushes still had flowers on them when everything froze, and so did a lot of other things. I didn't have a chance to do my usual fall clean up before it started snowing, so my yard's a big mess this spring. Now I have to pick another small project to work on, bit by bit until my entire yard's ready. I have to move a few plants, too. Does anyone know how to kill a St. John's Wort? It's taking over my yard! 2. Yesterday, I finally dropped off a bunch of job applications. I applied for a summer school position and for other traditional teaching jobs. I got two more applications done today for teaching, and I got three "classified" job applications with school districts submitted as well. I had started the job applications in November and December, before I graduated, but I couldn't submit them yet because I didn't have all of the proof that I was a qualified teacher, (I was waiting for my transcripts, teaching certificate, letters of recommendation, etc.). Applying to teaching positions really takes a lot of time.
  2. Ditto to that---the "I CHOSE NOT TO" part.
  3. Yes, that's definitely another one we should be happy about, right? Love you, my dear friend. edit: Lakey, love the siggy.
  4. I subbed today in a special education class. It was a class where all of the kids were pretty deeply affected, so they were in this classroom all day. I worked with one girl all day, and she was truly a delight. She was so cute and sweet, it really made my day. We did a computer game called "Pay the Jukebox," it's a game that gives you an amount of money (say, $0.65) and you have to insert that much into the jukebox. If you get the amount right, it plays a song. I was told to "make a big deal" out of correct answers to keep her motivated, so when the songs were playing because she chose the correct amount of money, I tried to get her to dance by dancing all dorky. At first, she was skeptical, but after a few rounds, I noticed her little shoulders started to move up and down. #lol# She got braver as time went by, and by the end of computer game time, we were downright boogieing when she got the answer right.
  5. That's how I got the Dyson. Our friends had a central vacuum installed in their home. I have used the Dyson, and I must say, I think I'm addicted. I have a Kenmore that's about 10 years old (it takes bags), and a Eureka that's bagless, (also about 10 years old). Both work well, and I've never really had an issue with either. The Kenmore was mine, the Eureka was my BF's. About two weeks ago, we borrowed a friend's Dyson after I vacuumed the house really well with the Eureka. I vacuumed my living room and the furniture for over two hours and cat hair kept coming up! (I have an indoor-outdoor cat who has short hair) I was really shocked at how much dust and other crud came out of the canister after I'd used the Eureka. I thought my house was pretty clean. (Though I'd heard the claims about all of the stuff that they pick up...I was still shocked.) I paid about $300 for my Kenmore vacuum about 10 years ago. It's been reliable, etc., and so has the Eureka. I've got bad dust allergies, so I really think this can help.
  6. I got a Dyson yesterday. It was a used one that we bought from friends, but it was only about a year old and we got the Animal DC17 for about $250. It's half price, and we had to do a bit of "cleaning up" on it, but I think it's going to be a good machine. I'm hoping that the Dyson will help with my allergies. I'm allergic to dust, and our house is really dusty.
  7. You look so triumphant! Kat, what a great picture. You're so photogenic.
  8. I see the resemblance, but I think Bonnie's prettier than Jodie Foster by far. I just don't think Jodie Foster's too cute. There's something about her that bugs me, and I don't really know what it is. Cool picture!
  9. I know the feeling. I used to actually style my hair in the mornings before work, school, whatever. I don't do that anymore--my hair's stick straight, so I can get away with blow-drying it and putting a bit of product on the ends...and then I'm done. It's getting longer than it has been, so actually "doing" it is too much work! LOL (It also adds "specialness" to it when I do style it.)
  10. I was also scared of putting my fingers in on my eye. It actually took me like 2 hours to get a contact in my eye for the first time. I really like the way my peripheral vision is clear, how I can lay down and read, etc. I also really hate it when I exercise my face gets sweaty, and my glasses seem to irritate that a bit more, (same with sunglasses when I'm sweaty..drives me crazy). I actually think the contacts save my eyes from a lot of things--hair in your eyes doesn't hurt as much, dust doesn't make your eyes as scratchy, etc. (unless the stuff is under your lens, and that's a different story altogether). I guess I'm a happy camper with the contacts. The only thing I could think that was better was if I were to get Lasik and not need corrective lenses at all--or not as much as I need them now.
  11. We have a GPS thing for our computers, but it's too much of a pain the the ass to use. My laptop is a 17" Compaq, and I don't have a cigarette charger for it. My cell phone has a GPS service included in my monthly rate plan, but I've yet to use it. I don't feel like I go on road trips enough to buy a portable GPS device. I like the atlases when I really don't know where I'm driving because I can get a better idea where I'm headed.
  12. With DVDs, it still has the black bar at the top, but there is a much bigger area that is shown than a regular TV. My HDTVs (we have a 42" Samsung plasma and a 32" Sylvania), have a "screen mode" button that allows you to change the view on the TV. This is especially good when you have a TV show that you're watching that's only been produced in the old format, because you don't get the picture filling up the screen. If you hit "screen mode," you can expand the picture inside the TV. ...and now, I'm going to watch the DVD that came from Netflix yesterday: Changeling.
  13. I can read without lenses, but I can only read if the book, etc. is only a few inches from my face--it can't be more than 10 or 12. My mom cracked me up last summer when we took our road trip to see RP/AK in Lake Tahoe. She left her reading glasses at home, so when she was supposed to be navigator for me, she tried to hold the entire atlas as far away from her as possible in the front seat of my small little Accord! I had to grab the atlas from her because she wouldn't be able to find the highway numbers or freeway exit numbers, even when I put my finger on them! She wouldn't buy reading glasses at the truck stops. She drove me cray all weekend--since she couldn't read, she didn't let me read, either.
  14. ^no, it's SNOWING outside right now. (our weather has been very strange the past few weeks...snows then it melts immediately; snows again, then it's about 60+ degrees; etc., etc.) Me too. Bonnie! Great picture! Love it! Were you going out?
  15. I can't see the 2" number display on my alarm clock without glasses or contacts. I have to have corrective lenses. I had to start wearing glasses when I was in 4th grade. I didn't get them until I was in 6th grade, so I was always sitting on the floor in front of the chalkboard at school. It was embarrassing, so when I finally got glasses, I was happy. I have a friend whose RX is almost twice as bad as mine--mine's -4.75, hers is over -7. She told me that she drove without her contacts in a SNOW STORM when she was home visiting over Christmas break. Talk about scary. I have lost a contact or have one fall out, etc., when I was driving before, and I closed the eye with the contact in it to see what I would be in for if I didn't have corrective lenses. That's pretty scary. I can't even see the lines on the road. I wouldn't even think of driving anywhere if I didn't have any kind of corrective lenses in. I wouldn't even walk to the mailbox without them!
  16. My mom has contacts, but she never wears them. She has a bad astigmatism, so the glasses really to correct her vision much better. It takes her like over an hour to get them in or out of her eyes. I know it's not nice, but it makes me laugh at her. #lol#
  17. He's not crazy about them, LOL. He encourages me to take them out of my eyes at night, for sure. The real reason I asked for them is because I HATE it when I fall asleep with them in, then you get up to go to bed and you have to take them out, etc. It ends up waking me up again. I'm also blind as a bat, so I hate it when I can NEVER find my glasses when I wake up in the middle of the night. I'm hoping to get Lasik once I can afford it. I know I'll probably have to do it again once I'm a bit older, but I really think it would be worth it--even if my eyesight wasn't 20/20--as long as it's better. I also hope that it may help with the bifocal issue when I do get older. I'm not looking forward to that! I've been wearing this brand for about 7(?) years now. I've honestly never had a problem with them. In fact, I stopped having issues with my eyes after I stopped using a ton of solutions for my contacts. I used to get conjunctivitis a lot, and once an ulcer when I first started wearing contacts, when I was 14 or 15, and once I stopped using all of the cleaning solution, my eyes stopped bothering me.
  18. I have a decent pair, but the RX is about .25 weaker than my contacts. I wanted to get new lenses in them last year, but sadly, I just couldn't afford them without health insurance and the very limited income I had during the past year. I wear the Ciba Night and Day--they're good for 30 days, and my doctor tells me to leave them out for 24 hours a week and try to take them out a few nights a week. They're like $70-75 a 6-pack, but that's not too bad, considering I can buy one box at a time-my RX in each eye is really close, one eye just has a very weak astigmatism that I don't correct with the contacts.
  19. That's awesome! I took chemistry in college, and I flunked it. They didn't offer it again, so I never re-took it. The F is on my transcript. Congrats! That's awesome! It's really no small feat to be voted the best eye doctor in a city--no matter how big/small. I'm sure you have your diehard contact wearers who will still be coming in though. My RX is almost expired and I'm almost out of contacts, which means health insurance or not, I've got to go. (My glasses' RX is about 3 years old now, so they would just give me a headache.)
  20. Thanks, it's good to know! I still have money on my Barnes and Noble gift card that my aunt gave me for graduation--maybe I'll use it for that. How's the book by Carl Haissen? (I'm sure I spelled it wrong) I read his kids' book Hoot a while ago and enjoyed it.
  21. That's exciting, Miss HD! (also a great picture...)
  22. I got to sleep in for as long as I wanted today. I woke up rested--and before 9am. (crazy! sleeping in usually means much later than that, but when I'm getting up early, 9 am is late!)
  23. Are they cute? If so, I'm wondering if I should attempt to collect them for my beautiful little niece. One that's never quite made it onto my "must read" list, though it should be there. How is it? It's one of those "need to reads" on my hypothetical list. I see it every time I'm at the bookstore, but I never grab it.
  24. I didn't catch it until she replied! #lol# ...and even then I had to go back and look.
