  1. Eddie Van Halen may have been making a general statement about the timeline for playing clubs.

Also, in 1974, just glancing at Reisner's site, there were no apparent shows by Led Zeppelin in Los Angeles.

In 1975, the Los Angeles concerts were in March, and Led Zeppelin was in England a few days before and after John Bonham's birthday.

In 1976, there was no apparent tour anywhere; this may have been the time when the band was recuperating from unforseen circumstances.

In 1977, Led Zeppelin was in North Carolina on John Bonham's birthday, and did not come to Los Angeles until the last week of June.

Therefore, 1973 makes the most sense.

Your intent here is honorable but your logic is faulty. You seem to have gotten the idea Bonham's birthdate has something to do with the date Eddie Van Halen met him and Blackmore -- has nothing to do with it. It's completely irrelevent. Bonham had one birthday in L.A. -- his 21st -- and Blackmore wasn't there, let alone Eddie Van Halen.

Secondly, Reisner's site only provides performance dates, not public appearances, which

I've already gone to great lengths to outline. The West Coast launch of Swan Song was held in Los Angeles on May 13, 1974. They were already in town a few days first (they went to see Elvis at The Forum and met him at his hotel across the street...they were photographed in drag by BP Fallon at the Riot House and these images were used on the cover of Physical Graffiti) and probably for a few after.

If you scroll back you'll see the possibilities outlined from 1974-1977. I have already clarified at least three times now Eddie Van Halen said "we were playing clubs" at the time of the meeting. If we presume he meant Van Halen, the "classic" Van Halen line-up was not playing clubs in 1973 -- Michael Anthony didn't join the band until 1974.

  2. Maybe you didn't read the part where I stated that Van Halen did not start playing clubs until 1974.

I agree it was inappropriate for her to keep spamming the thread with "maybe it was..." particularly in light of the contributions already posted, to include mine wherein I clearly outlined the probability of this meeting between Bonzo, Blackmore and Van Halen is confined to a few brief timeframes within the period of 1974-1977. I think I'm bound to myself to solve it now if only for sake of the aggravation encountered. Ever onward!

  3. Hey, Steve, I think this is evolving into a "Zeppelin Mystery"!

Absolutely. I'm very intrigued by the possibility. Unfortunately, I haven't gotten much beyond confirming the Ice Palace did indeed host popular music concerts in 1969. The

whole story sounded so preposterous initially - Led Zeppelin at an Ice Palace in Las Vegas on the only possible open date in August 1969- but the possibility is very real.

I never could figure out why Jimmy flew to New York from Salt Lake City but if he did

not depart from Los Angeles he may have needed a connecting flight. All I can do at

this point is implore any forum members with access to Las Vegas newspaper archives

(public library) to scour the week of August 11th 1969 for mention of a Led Zeppelin

performance at the Ice Palace (advertisement, review, news item, gig listing). At this

    moment it remains unconfirmed officially.

  4. I've seen photos in which various members of Zep were wearing tour jackets ie,,..North America Tour 1975. Who were issued these jackets besides the band? Roadies, record execs,..were they given away by radio stations etc? Just curious.

Great question! Peter Grant would never approve of something so "personal" being issued to outsiders (radio stations, etc). Certainly the four band members, Grant and Cole were issued jackets. I believe a limited number were also provided to crew members. So far as I know no jackets were issued before 1975.

Full length robes were designed and commissioned in 1980. John Bonham's (worn) was sold at auction many years ago. Robert's was sold in a Dick Clark charitible auction about a year or so ago.

I was once in contact with "Big Bob", who handled official merchandise sales for Jimmy's 1988 Outrider Tour. Apparently he was not included in the tour jacket allocation. When Jimmy was made aware of this Jimmy had another jacket commissioned by the original

manufacturer and personally presented it to Bob backstage in Syracuse as a gift. That

jacket as well as some of Bob's personal effects from the tour are proudly preserved in my archive.

  5. On what day was this photo taken?

    113747680_503534.gif

    Make your own Glitter Graphics

You sent this to me via private email with the caption "John Bonham's Birthday Party".

If that caption is correct then it is almost certainly May 31st 1973, his 21st Birthday.

They then played The Forum in Inglewood that night and attended an after-show party at a radio station owner's home in Laurel Canyon to further celebrate his birthday. George Harrison hit Bonzo with his own birthday cake and many people were thrown into the pool. Jimmy alledgedly protested he was unable to swim, but he had also sprained his finger three nights prior so he was allowed to wade in fully clothed.

  6. Could the album in question have been Phil Collins' "Face Value"? That was released in '81.

I may have mentioned 'Face Value' somewhere in the thread. If not, I agree it very well may have been the one. I don't have the fanzine in question within arm's reach at the

moment so I don't want to misquote what the writer claims Jimmy to have said. I don't

think Jimmy necessarily told anyone he had played on it. He may have said something like "a new album of mine by a very famous drummer" and was immediately misheard or misunderstood by the author as saying "a new album of I and a very famous drummer".

The closest we ever got to a possible drummer's name insofar as a collaboration was Dave Mattacks on the Death Wish II soundtrack, but this get together in question was held on August 30th 1981 and Jimmy did not begin work on that project until September

(give or take a week or so).

He delivered the mastertapes for that album to the film studio in December 1981 and devoted most of January 1982 to remixing and reworking the monaural masters into stereo. if we can agree he had no reason to have a test pressing or an acetate cut in

August 1981 then we agree it didn't exist on the night in question!

  7. So the photo at the Rainbow of John Bonham with the band was taken in another year besides 1972?

John Bonham very well could have been photographed with Led Zeppelin at The Rainbow in 1972, circa June 22nd-27th (they stayed down the road at the Continental Hyatt House while on tour in Southern California). I very much doubt his May 31st 1972 birthday was held there as the opening date of their summer tour was Detroit, June 6.

  8. Maybe it was on the celebration of John Bonham's 24th birthday, May 31, 1972? Eddie Van Halen grew up locally so he would have heard about the Rainbow.

No. Led Zeppelin had played in Brussels, Belgium just three days prior (May 28th) and

the tour opened in Detroit on June 6th. The only possibility for '72 is circa June 22-27.

Eddie said he ("we") was playing clubs at the time of the meeting so this time period

(1972) is a remote possibility at best, and anything prior to '72 is impossible as he was

not playing clubs with Mammoth (Van Halen) prior to '72.

  9. This from http://www.dead.net/show/march-29-1969

    Ice Palace

On June 13th, 2007 gmt said:

The Ice Palace was an old ice skating rink in a shopping center located on the south side of East Charleston (possibly East Sahara - it's been a long time & I haven't lived in Vegas since 1971) between Maryland Parkway & Eastern. If I recall correctly, there were some other big shows there in 1969, including Led Zeppelin.

    Ice Palace

On July 20th, 2007 worldbetween said:

We saw lots of shows at the ice palace, didn't see the dead show, too bad. I didn't really know who they were back then. The ice palace was in the Comercial Shopping Center on E Sahara and Maryland Pkwy. Went skating there, too. Cool place for the desert.

  10. Perhaps Eddie Van Halen met John Bonham in 1972.

Possible but unlikely. Eddie said at the time of the meeting he had "grown up on" him.

Eddie was only 17 in 1972. He also indicates "we" were playing clubs and while it is

true Mammoth formed in 1972, Michael Anthony did not join to complete the classic

Van Halen line-up until 1974, and the band name was then changed to Van Halen.

If I had to guess I'd say this meeting occured in '77, but I won't guess because I will

    figure it out!

  11. About the time when Eddie was in the studio at work on Van Halen II perhaps? He did say so himself apparently, but he did not state that he met John Bonham in 1979, although Jas Obrecht of Guitar Player Magazine interviewed Eddie Van Halen in 1979.

The key to solving this is to confirm when Bonzo and Blackmore were in LA at the same time between 1974-1977. I know this meeting didn't happen after '77 because John Bonham never returned to the United States after he and Dennis Sheehan accompanied Robert back to England on July 26 1977.

    The possibilities (John Bonham):

Circa May 9-11 1974 (Swan Song West Coast Launch)

Circa March 10-29 1975 (1975 North American Tour)

    Circa Sept/Oct 1975 (Studio sessions)

    Circa Jan/Feb/Mar 1976

(Page, Plant & Bonham in town to check out local acts such as The Runaways)

Circa May 22-23 1976 (Hanging out with Bad Company)

Circa Jun 15-27 1977 (1977 North American Tour)

    * Note: Zep's Sept 6th 1975 concert at Rose Bowl in Pasadena was postoned on

August 8th 1975 following Plant's car crash on the island of Rhodes and ultimately

cancelled. Perhaps Eddie Van Halen held a ticket?

  12. Searched for backup and found this - from Las Vegas Weekly - "top 25" concerts held in Vegas

The ONLY possibility within that month is August 11th.

On August 12th Jimmy flew to New York to mix Led Zeppelin II at A&R studios. His flight landed at JFK International and he was supposed to have been met by Peter Grant and journalist Ritchie Yorkie but the times were two hours off and they weren't there so Jimmy took a cab to the studio.

At the studio, Jimmy and Eddie Kramer completed the mixing of 'Bring It On Home' and the playback for 'Living Loving Maid', 'Heartbreaker' and 'What Is And What Should Never Be'. Having listened to the playback, Jimmy, Peter and Ritchie conversed for some time.

Jimmy was flown from JFK International to LAX that night, and he rejoined the band at their hotel, the Continental Hyatt House on the Sunset Strip.

Where things get mysterious (IMHO) is Jimmy's outbound flight to New York apparently transited Salt Lake City. One would think had he originated from Los Angeles it would

have been a direct flight to New York. Perhaps he originated from Las Vegas on a flight

with a stop-over in Salt Lake City?

The possibility they played Las Vegas on August 11th 1969 is suddenly very real!

Edit: Their next date was August 13th in Lubbock, TX. Unsure why Las Vegas Weekly

mentions Phoenix. That is clearly incorrect.

  13. Eddie Van Halen was just one of the local guitarists, Steve.

Oh, I'm familiar with who Eddie Van Halen is. I'm aware of his rise to fame starting out as Mammoth in Pasadena and doing demos for Gene Simmons in '76. In fact, I'm listening to

those demos right now and they flat out rock! There are ten: On Fire, Babe, Don't Leave Me Alone, Big Trouble, etc. Blistering stuff. Anyway, my interest in this matter is simply pinpointing the time at which his path crossed Blackmore's & Bonzo's, as he claimed in 1979 that it had.

  14. Thanks. But listen:

Eddie Van Halen told Guitar Player Magazin in 1979 the following: "....Blackmore. I once met him at the Rainbow with John Bonham when we where just playin clubs. I ran over to them an said hello, and they both locked up to me and said 'Who are you? Fuck off!'"

Okay, that scenario is entirely plausible because it puts Eddie on the Sunset Strip sometime between '75-'77 while Led Zeppelin was in town, as opposed to Bonzo going out of his way to see him perform. The Rainbow was an old haunt of course, just down the road from their hotel. I'll look into trying to confirm if the Deep Purple and Zeppelin tours overlapped in LA, which would put Blackmore and Bonzo together during this time.

For what it's worth, Jimmy spent some time with Eddie in October 1991 while working on

Coverdale/Page in Vancouver. Eddie also introduced Jimmy the night Jimmy was inducted

into the Hollywood Rock Walk on Dec 7th '93. There's no bad blood between Jimmy and Eddie, although he did call Ross about 20 times when he was in LA with Jimmy in January 2004! Jimmy finally called Eddie back but it was the day he was returning to England so I don't think they ever did get together that time around.

  15. Update: Led Zeppelin vs. Harold Ballard

Led Zeppelin was scheduled to perform in Toronto on April 1st & 3rd 1977. Both dates were postponed in a March 3rd 1977 press release on account of Robert Plant's tonsilitis and the death of Karac Plant in July 1977 ruled out any rescheduling.

The Toronto Maple Leafs hockey club was scheduled for a home game on Sat, Apr 3rd 1977 so the Led Zeppelin road crew would have had to dismantle and reassemble the stage in between performances if in fact Maple Leaf Gardens was the host venue.

  16. Led Zeppelin Members and Deep Purple Members

    Hey Steve. Great Thread.

Did ever a member of LZ play together with an member of DP?? I once read that bonzo appeared at a DP concert in 1976. And i read that Blackmore hung around with bonzo and they laughed at Eddie van halen. What is the truth about this?

In January 1976 Page, Plant, & Bonham were staying at the Park Lane Hotel in New York

City. They were in town to conduct press interviews. One night, Bonzo attended Deep Purple's concert at Radio City Music Hall. At the end of the show he ran onstage and

addressed the crowd, shouting "we've got a new album coming out soon!"

I'm not aware of anyone in Led Zeppelin having watched Eddie Van Halen perform in the '70s, either as Mammoth or Van Halen. From '74-'76 they were primarily a Pasadena & Southern CA-based band. I can't see why they would have been bothered to go in '76 as they were relatively unheard of prior to cutting demos for Gene Simmons and in '77

Zep spent most of their off time in LA at their old haunts on the Sunset Strip or over in Laurel Canyon.

  17. IMTOD was an old slave song that was sung in the south during the Civil War, or something similar to it.

In My Time of Dying" is a blues song that has been covered by many rock musicians since the early 1960s. The original recording was a traditional gospel song recorded by Blind Willie Johnson, titled "Jesus Make Up My Dying Bed"; his sides were recorded over the period 1927-1930.

Interesting to note in the May 2008 issue of Uncut Jimmy is specifically asked about the cough at the end of the track. He doesn't claim it is a tip of the hat to Johnson, who had died from pneumonia after going to sleep in a wet night shirt having fought a fire which consumed his home. Perhaps because it is Jimmy whom coughs?

  18. Thanks a lot SteveAJones. I searched for Rose and Bonzo with google, but couldn't find any detail.

Unfortunately, google and the internet in general is not very helpful for researching the

pre-Zeppelin recording and performance history of Plant and Bonham. Only persistent,

painstaking research of newspaper archives and collaboration with others ever seems

to bring these details to light.

  19. In May 1968, Robert Plant disbanded The Band of Joy so John Bonham teamed up with bassist Dave Pegg to back Tim Rose on a full UK Tour for 40 pounds a week wages. I

show the following dates, cities and venues confirmed but undoubtedly there are others:

June 28 1966 Hastings, England (Venue unconfirmed)

July 14 1968 (Sun) London, England Blaises

July 16 1968 (Tue) London, England Marquee

July 30 1968 (Tue) Wood Green, London, England Fishmongers Arms 287 High Road

July 31 1968 (Wed) Hampstead, London, England Country Club 210-A Haverstock Hill

On Robert Plant's advice, Page, Peter Grant, and bassist Chris Dreja met with John at the Country Club in Hampstead and watched him perform. John went on to tour briefly with Chris Farlowe before joining Robert in The New Yardbirds.
