Spesh531
So I've been inspired by the ongoing Metallica Deluxe Edition series (which features the original album, riff tapes, demo tapes, rough mixes, and about 3-6 concerts per album). This got me thinking: which concerts could go into a Led Zeppelin version of this? This is what I have so far (official albums or parts of album are in bold, projects I've done that would be included are underlined, general concerts that needs specification are in italics) Led Zeppelin: Gladsaxe '69, Paris '69, misc. BBC '69 Led Zeppelin II: RAH '70 Led Zeppelin III: Led Zeppelin IV: BBC '71, Japan '71, UK '71, Australasia '72?, LA '72 Houses of the Holy: Japan '72, UK '72/'73, Euro '73, NYC '73 Physical Graffiti: Chicago '75?, Baton Rouge '75, Seattle '75, Earl's Court '75 Presence: Landover '77, Seattle '77, In Through the Out Door: Knebworth '79, Berlin '80 I'm shooting for 5-7 concerts for LZ1, LZ2, LZ4, HotH; 2-3 for LZ3; 3-5 for P.G. Presence and ITtOD. Concerts can be conglomerated in multiple nights like How the West Was Won and The Song Remains the Same or like my Earls Court '75 and Landover '77 videos on my YouTube. Tour eras I'm shooting for: Led Zeppelin I: Scandinavia '68 to North America Summer '69 Led Zeppelin II: European Autumn '69 to N.A. Spring '70 Led Zeppelin III: Iceland, Bath, & German '70 & N.A. Summer '70 Led Zeppelin IV: UK Spring '71 to N.A. '72 Houses of the Holy: Japan '72 to N.A. '73 Physical Graffiti: N.A. '75 & Earl's Court '75 Presence: North America 1977 In Through the Out Door: Copenhagen 1979 to Europe 1980 (Coda: '85, '88, '95, & '07) Edited April 2, 2019 by Spesh531 Minor grammar correction
Bonzo_fan
I'm not very into Metallica, but that certainly sounds like a cool way to do deluxe editions, and I wish Jimmy had done them like that! Are we assuming for the purposes of this exercise that Jimmy has access to at least soundboard-quality recordings of all shows? If so, I would say: Led Zeppelin: - January 26, 1969 - Boston - April 24-27, 1969 - San Francisco - August 31, 1969 - Texas Pop Festival Led Zeppelin II: - October 10, 1969 - Paris - January 9, 1970 - London - March 7, 1970 - Montreux - March 21, 1970 - Vancouver - April 17, 1970 - Memphis Led Zeppelin III: - June 28, 1970 - Bath Festival - August 21, 1970 - Tulsa - September 4, 1970 - Los Angeles - September 6, 1970 - Honolulu - September 19, 1970 (Afternoon & Evening) - New York Led Zeppelin IV: - March 5, 1971 - Belfast - May 3, 1971 - Copenhagen - August 21, 1971 - Los Angeles - August 31, 1971 - Orlando - September 23, 1971 - Tokyo - September 28, 1971 - Osaka - September 29, 1971 - Osaka Houses Of The Holy: - June 19, 1972 - Seattle - June 25, 1972 - Los Angeles - March 22, 1973 - Essen - March 24, 1973 - Offenburg - June 3, 1973 - Los Angeles - July 17, 1973 - Seattle - July 21, 1973 - Providence Physical Graffiti: - Maybe a January show for "The Wanton Song"--would be nice to have recordings for 1/18 Minneapolis & 1/21 Chicago to make a better judgement - February 8, 1975 - Philadelphia - March 12, 1975 - Long Beach - March 19 & 20, 1975 - Vancouver - March 21, 1975 - Seattle - May 18 & 23, 1975 - London Presence: - April 28, 1977 - Cleveland - April 30, 1977 - Pontiac - June 13, 1977 - New York - June 21-23, 1977 - Los Angeles In Through The Out Door: - July 24, 1979 - Copenhagen - August 4, 1979 - Knebworth - June 30, 1980 - Frankfurt Coda: - IMO, nothing after Bonham's death is even remotely release-worthy, 12/10/07 at the O2 notwithstanding, obviously. I would probably use the Coda deluxe to put out other curiosities, like all of the '75 "No Quarter" jams, or every Europe '73 "Dazed And Confused," or every cover they ever did in a medley, or something... I put those two June '72 marathons in with HOTH rather than IV because they were already debuting a fair bit of HOTH material--"Over The Hills And Far Away," "Dancing Days," "The Crunge" (in Dazed), and "The Ocean" were all played at those two shows, and Plant was singing them better than he did after that tour (as has been discussed ad nauseum). Plus, IV already has a plethora of great '71 shows to choose from. The trouble is, there are so many shows with no surfaced recordings from '69 to '71, that we are quite possibly missing some of the best shows from those years. I've thought about this for a while, glad to see I'm not alone, though I am sure many of us have. After the first rerelease came out with the Paris 69 concert as a companion disc, I had hoped that would he the MO for the rest of the studio deluxe versions, but alas...😒 . Not that the Olympia concert was such a great choice, but at least it was a nice complimentary show to the material, though a bit late. Spring 69 shows like Fillmore West would have been a better choice, or Texas Pop. Ah well. Edited April 3, 2019 by porgie66
Spesh531
Shows for Led Zeppelin I I've come down to 6 or 7 shows for the Zep I era: Scandinavia '68, UK '68: There are no known recordings for these two tours, though I feel these could even be considered "New Yardbirds" era tours (maybe October 25 for the UK tour purely for the fact it was their first show as "Led Zeppelin".) North America Winter '68-'69: December 30, 1968 – Spokane, WA (for the sole purpose of being the first known recording. If there is anything earlier on this tour, I'd place it here. If something from before this tour exists, I'd just remove this.) January 23-26, 1969 – Boston, MA UK/Scandinavia '69: March 15-17 – Danish shows (including Danmarks TV) North America Spring '69: April 24-27 – San Francisco, CA shows (including both Fillmore West and Winterland Ballroom. A sort of first "How the West Was Won," per se.) UK Summer '69: June 20 – Newcastle, UK (considering it's the only full length concert available to our ears for this tour, this is my pick. I would consider June 15th in Manchester since they played more songs than usual for this tour, but I would actually have to hear it first before making a judgement call) North America Summer '69: August 18 (evening) – Toronto, Canada (If I had to choose between Toronto and Texas Pop Festival, I think I'd choose this show, as it feels much more intimate of a show. I feel both this and the Texas concert are both deserving.) August 31 – Lewisville (Texas Pop Festival), TX I'm slowly going through each tour, trying to find that one show (or small group of shows within a small area [i.e. How the West Was Won]) per tour (not counting the '75, '77, '79 & '80 tours), and will keep posting for anyone interested. If anyone has any additional insight into my choices, I'd love to hear from you. Edited April 11, 2019 by Spesh531
Spesh531
I've finished my pick for UK/Scandinavia 1969. This is a showcase of the Danish shows March 15 – 17. I've ordered the setlist in a way that was typical to this tour. I was able to cheat a little bit since the Danmarks concert was already on the DVD, so this was a quickie. More info about which gig was used for each song, etc. is in the video description. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZgSXPaRQHfY
