SteveAJones
I seem to recall John mentioning this tour. He had worked with them of course on the commercially successfully "Mrs Brown You've Got a Lovely Daughter" album in 1968. It seems to me the story went that by 1967 he'd become fed up with sessions and took them up on their offer to tag along with them on their tour of Germany. He was part of their entourage. I don't believe he ever jammed with them but may have. I'm seeking confirmation from JPJ, Herman's Hermits or anyone who may know if he did indeed join them on a tour of Germany in 1967. Any tour dates/venues also welcomed. Edit: Release date for the album corrected. Edited March 20, 2008 by SteveAJones
swandown
Steve, The "Mrs. Brown" album (and movie) was actually 1968, at the tail end of JPJ's involvement with HH. It was a strange decision to make a movie based on a 3-year-old song, maybe even a career-ending mistake. But perhaps their management figured that the only way a "retro" group could remain popular was by staying retro? You might try emailing Peter Noone or Barry Whitwham at their respective websites? They've been known to respond to fans...

I acknowledge only the single predates this alleged tour of Germany and not the album. I shall try the websites you mentioned. This has been on my unresolved list for almost ten years! Thanks, Swandown!
SteveAJones
Word has been received John Paul Jones did in fact perform with Herman's Hermits in Germany on the "Yardley Tour", playing hammond organ for the string arrangements he did for those songs. He recalls playing in Hamburg, but wasn't sure about any other dates. Regarding the church depicted in his fantasy segment in The Song Remains the Same, he recalls it being in Withyham, East Sussex -- probably St. Michael's. I'll continue researching that '67 tour of Germany and look forward to visiting East Sussex. Pehaps there are German forum members here who can contribute additional findings. My personal thanks and gratitude to the one who put this inquiry forward. Again, I greatly appreciate it!
Hotplant
Good detective work there Steve. My first "rock crush" was Herman. That blue eye thing. They were the first pro band I saw, straight out of 6th grade, The Who opened for them. I was in the front row center. Got Moons drumstick! After I saw Daltrey... I had second thoughts about Herman. Had never seen a guy wiggle dangly things from his hips! I wish Jonsey had been there. This was at The Lagoon Patio Gardens, where alot of early rockers played. SLC, UT. Must have been 68...hmmm

SteveAJones
Would a German forum member kindly translate: Muziek Express Feb 13th 1967 Liebe mp-Freunde! Sendetermin: 11. März in Eurer Bude. Inzwischen das Beste für Euch alle. Bis bald. SteveAJones
UPDATE: “John Paul Jones joined the band for one tour in Europe, but Herman’s Hermits didn’t think much of him. I was the only fan of his at the time. I think they wanted to keep more money for themselves.” -- Peter Noone of Herman's Hermits

SteveAJones
Well, at long last I recently took the opportunity to contact Peter Noone of Herman's Hermits and today I received his reply: Hello Steve, How great that you chronicle my favorite modern musician and in fact my hero John. I have always thought he was a gent and the quiet genius who never got the public attention but that every musician "knew" was brilliant. I tried to get him to join us but I think plant and page needed him more than the hermits as we were sort of losing our group consciousness and the future of music did not begin with the letter H. Send me some questions and I will try my best. I am now compiling a list of questions pertaining to JPJ's mid-60's association with Herman's Hermits - to include the '67 German Tour - for Peter's consideration. Catch Peter Noone on his current North American tour now! swandown
"The London Look" was recorded by John Paul Jones and Graham Gouldman without any of the Hermits present. Peter Noone overdubbed his vocals at a later session.

Jones Date: Mon, 19 Nov 2012 sorry steve, but it's a bit of a blur. I know we took him on a short tour and tried to con him into joining our band, but we were close to the end of our hectic run and he wisely deferred.....I remember we did a few german dates and he played the `B3 and no milk today was memorabe as he played the string lines he had written for our recording!!! I think he saw we were sort of fading (musically) and we didn't see much of a future as a band. we were looking at casino and night club dates, and none of us really had any intention of growing musically in the confined space of herman's hermits. Administrators sam_webmaster Posted January 28, 2016 Administrators Share Posted January 28, 2016 Chicago Tribune | 1/28/2016 http://www.chicagotribune.com/suburbs/post-tribune/lifestyles/ct-ptb-salute-to-60s-st-0129-20160128-story.html Rubbing shoulders with notables was commonplace for the 68-year-old London resident, who also has a home in Santa Barbara, Calif. The name of a legendary rock bassist comes up when discussing "No Milk Today," a 1967 Herman's Hermits gem. "I think it's Herman's Hermits' best record," Noone said. "It's really well recorded. John Paul Jones did the arrangement. Before he was in Led Zeppelin, he worked with Herman's Hermits." There was an intriguing 24 hours of studio work that involved Jones. "In the studio that day we did three songs: 'Dandy,' 'No Milk Today' and 'There's a Kind of Hush'; he played bass on all three tracks," Noone said. SteveAJones
Always great to see further illumination on JPJ's involvement with Herman's Hermits. Posted in another thread is affirmation from JPJ (via Sam) that he does recall performing in Hamburg on the Yardley tour (but no other dates).
