1961 Fender Jazz Bass

Jones' primary bass from 1968-1977.

Serial number is 74242

Specs:

Body: Alder

Finish: 3-tone Sunburst

Neck: Rosewood

Fingerboard: Rosewood

Frets: 20

Bridge: Jazz Bass

Hardware: Nickel/Chrome

Pickguard: Tortoise grain celluloid 3-layer pickguard

Pickups: 2 Standard Alnico Magnet Jazz Bass Single Coil

Controls: 2 Volume, 1 Tone

Alembic 4-String

This bass guitar was used on-stage from April 1977 through 1988

Specs:

Body: Series II Omega, mahogany body, burl rosewood top

Finish: High gloss polyester

Neck: Mahogany

Fingerboard: Ebony

Frets: 24

Hardware: Gold Alembic-Gotoh

Pickups: SC-1 w/hx

Controls: Volume, low-pass filter with continuously variable Q for each pickup plus Pickup selector switch and master volume

Alembic 8-String

This bass guitar was used on-stage from April 1977 through 1988 for Achilles Last Stand and Nobody's Fault But Mine

Finish: High gloss polyester

Actually JPJ's was an original Precision bass: they had that body shape when they first came out, then evolved into the shape that we now think of as a P-bass.

They re-issued the early design in the '70s under the name of the Telecaster bass to distinguish it from the current Precision they were making.

I was just reading about that guitar on another forum - funny how the same things crop up simultaneously.

Oh, & looking at the original question, what on earth is an SX? Anyone?

He mainly used (or from what I remember anyways):

Fender Jazz Bass (the bass I ALWAYS associate with him)

Fender Precision Bass

Fender Bass V

and I guess some kind of Alembic...other than that I'm not sure
