I believe he used a Fender Jazz Bass.

He also used a Fender Telecaster bass, which is the sanded-down wood grain bass you see him playing, plus a Fender V

Actually JPJ's was an original Precision bass: they had that body shape when they first came out, then evolved into the shape that we now think of as a P-bass.

They re-issued the early design in the '70s under the name of the Telecaster bass to distinguish it from the current Precision they were making.

I was just reading about that guitar on another forum - funny how the same things crop up simultaneously.
