  1. This album hasn't even been released yet has it?
  2. Line by Line: Drive-By Truckers' Shonna Tucker Reads 'The Fine Print' IT TAKES A LOT of energy to be a Drive-By Truckers fan. The Athens, Ga.-based band is seemingly always on tour, in the studio or working on side projects. Which means there's always new material for fans to digest. The latest morsel in DBT's musical smorgasbord is "The Fine Print," (New West) a rarities collection culled from throughout the band's storied career. Such compilation albums are a time-tested stopgap release for some bands, but this album of spare parts actually seems to function as a cohesive whole. It's also the fourth DBT-related release this year: In April, the band backed Booker T. for "Potato Hole," and its subsequent tour; in June, bandleader Patterson Hood put out his second solo album (a solo tour followed); and last month, the band dropped its second live documentary, "Live from Austin Texas," a DVD/CD of a show filmed for PBS's "Austin City Limits" last year. Think that's too much? Add to it a tour that will swing into the South in October and studio release number eight, which is due next year. What keeps the DBT machine cranking? Creative compulsion. "We all have so much in our heads that we want to get out or we'd go insane, I guess," bassist Shonna Tucker said. "It's like a kid — just nervous energy. It's always been the case with three songwriters in the band. There is a lot of creativity that has to come out. We all just love it so much and want to keep it going while it's happening. I figure one day we'll be tired and want to slow down, but not now." Along with nine original songs (some new, some previously released), "The Fine Print" also finds the band covering Tom Petty, Warren Zevon, Tom T. Hall and Bob Dylan. It even features two songs by former guitarist — and Tucker's ex-husband — Jason Isbell, as well as Tucker's first lead vocal on a DBT recording ("Like a Rolling Stone"). In fact, much of the compilation comes from Tucker's first days in the band. She stepped in as Hood and Co. were finishing 2004's "The Dirty South," re-cutting her bass onto 22 songs that week. "When I listen to ['The Fine Print'] I think, 'Oh wow, that sounds like me five years ago," she said. "We didn't want to fix it too much — we don't want it to sound like we do now. This is all cool stuff that we thought should be out that we did a long time ago." To read the rest of the article click here.
  3. You can now watch Crate Diggers for free online. It's a documentary from a few years ago about record collecting. Go to http://www.miledeepfilms.com then select "work," then "in-house creative" and click on "Crate Diggers" from the right-hand menu.
  4. We're getting close to the finish line, anyone started giving any thought to their favorites from 2000 'til the end of 2009? I still have lots of pondering to do myself.
  5. Anything's possible, particularly in the music world but for the time being it looks like it's not true. ]Rolling Stones Deny Watts Departure
  6. "Charlie Watts Quits the Stones" gets much more press than official statements from the band denying the rumors. Kind of like how bad news travels fast, the same mindset that created "if it bleeds it leads". That's just one aspect of the sad, fucked up world we live in today. At least from a media standpoint. A very wise man named John Prine once wrote a song that starts off: "blow up your TV, throw away your paper..."
  7. "Sweet Home Alabama, play that dead band's song..."

Can't say it's a waste of money when I can actually listen to music I enjoy on the radio again. With the ability to pick up internet sites such as Pandora through your iPhone, people can now listen to internet-only stations in their cars. I imagine that will play a very huge role in how we listen to music on the go in the very near future. As for cable, many people are bypassing it altogether these days by watching programs via the web thanks to sites such as Hulu that allow you to watch movies for free. Also, YouTube is now allowing it's members to upload entire television episodes (amongst other long form video). I believe the ability to bypass cable and broadcast TV will strongly lend itself to the eventual decline of such traditional outlets in the years to come, if it hasn't started to already.

Word to the wise, next time you renew express your dissatisfaction with their outrageous prices and they should reduce the subscription fee significantly. The price for a yearly subscription has doubled since I first signed up back in the fall of '04. I also have not been at all happy about some of the channel changes since the merger. I threatened to cancel my subscription and they cut the cost by nearly 50%. At this stage of the game they need us a hell of a lot more than we need them.

  13. Considering there's no less than three threads to post video clips in existence (and that's just the ones I'm aware of), is there really any need for another one? Perhaps before new members are allowed to post they should have to take a tutorial on how to use the Search feature first. The You Tube Thread Yet Another "One Hit Wonder" Thread Videos and Songs

    Are you referring to "mash-ups"?
  17. This was released to most outlets a day early so I snatched up a copy. There's a nice shout out to NC's Patty Hurst Shifter via some poster art on the gatefold as well as heartfelt thanks to R.E.M. (including a nod to Dead Letter Office) in the liner notes.
  18. As long as you know going in not to expect a recounting of the performances from the concert itself, I think most everyone will enjoy it. One thing that threw me off is how people starting showing up at the main character's doorstep the moment the original concert entered it's early planning stages. It was as though as soon as it became an idea, everyone starting flocking to Bethel when I'm pretty sure that wasn't the case at all, though the movie seems to portray it that way. Otherwise I really enjoyed the film, the angle it takes does a great job of conjuring up the sights, sounds and feel of the times. I also found the psychedelic sequences to be especially well done.
  19. The reasons behind why it's taken so long for their catalog to be remastered and available digitally are right here in this thread as well as the Beatles thread, not to mention nearly every news item about the remasters that are readily available on the web.
