  1. Yeah, we already discussed how they don't fit the criteria mentioned in the original post but who knew? Apparently Jabe... Ted Nugent Gets the Gang Back Together
  2. PATTERSON HOOD TO RELEASE MURDERING OSCAR (and other love songs) on June 23, 2009 Patterson Hood & the Screwtopians announce first leg of the tour Patterson Hood will release Murdering Oscar (and other love songs) on June 23, 2009 on Ruth St. Records. The second solo record from the leader of the Drive-By Truckers has been 15 years in the making. The album was produced by Hood and long-time DBT producer David Barbe (Sugar). 3. It's funny, in a fairly recent interview I saw with Johnny Rotten (maybe on the Seven Ages of Rock documentary) he says he was actually a fan of Pink Floyd's, his "I Hate Pink Floyd" t-shirt was just a means of getting a rise out people, especially on their home turf.
  4. You don't see new music discussed here very much but by all reports last year's Gift of Screws from Lindsay is a great record.
  5. It's always been my understanding that the introduction of the digipak (along with the elimination of the CD longbox) was an environmental step in general. Of course it also makes it easier to replicate the original vinyl packaging but I believe it's an environmental thing more than anything.
  6. My excitement for these impending releases just went down a notch as I see where they're getting the digipak treatment. I'm all for saving the environment but don't see where plastic jewel cases are doing all that much harm. It's been my experience that a lot of digipaks just don't stand up to the punishment many of us give our CDs even if we're not being all that hard on them. The cardboard sleeves are also notorious for scratching up CDs so the least they could have done is use trays in the packaging. You can read more info on the remasters and see the packaging here.
  7. I do like and appreciate folk music, even Peter, Paul and Mary and Pete Seeger but some of it, I just can't handle. My taste in folk tends to lean more towards John Prine, Dylan, Nanci Griffith, Indigo Girls, Joni Mitchell, etc.
  8. Truth be told they're not actually using the name. Despite that I've noticed some news reports still referring to them as "the Grateful Dead". I've seen The Other Ones and have even seen the Jerry Garcia Band without Jerry but that was quite the moving experience since it wasn't so long after he died and it was more of a tribute to his memory than anything else. I saw "The Dead" on their last tour back in 2004 and I wouldn't even put it on a par with The Other Ones even though Branford Marsalis sat in on every song. Not saying I'd never go see them again but I do agree it's just not the same without Jerry. I feel the same about Led Zeppelin without John Bonham.
  9. Maybe I've just never heard the right songs but I've never been a huge fan of Gordon Lightfoot myself. Same for Harry Chapin. I'm sure some of their tunes are ok but some also remind me of this scene from Animal House.

  11. The Dead Rise Again At North Carolina Tour Kickoff I had to do a double take when reading the setlist from last night's show in D.C. (and hearing it announced on the Grateful Dead channel on Sirius/XM this afternoon) that Tipper Gore sat in on drums during Sugar Magnolia: The Dead in D.C., a Stirring, Smoky Bipartisan Show
  12. Here's a link to part five of the interview with Bill Flanagan in which Dylan reveals some of his favorite songwriters as Jimmy Buffett, John Prine and Guy Clark (amongst others). It's very cool to see him citing Buffett since so many seem to be unable to see past their view of him as a writer of novelty songs and as the "Mayor of Margaritaville" when there's so much more to him than that. Dylan performed A Pirate Looks at 40 once but the recording that surfaced from that show was of extremely poor quality. I've also read that Dylan once performed a song by John Prine when he was overseas and took credit for it without knowing Prine himself was in attendance that evening. Also nice to read in this interview that Dylan collaborated with Robert Hunter (of Grateful Dead fame) on some of the songs from his upcoming new album. 14. That sort of thing isn't unique to today's press, they've always worked that way, especially when the source is a publication (and I use that term very loosely) like the NY Post. Though they're not the source for the story you linked to, they're the source for the original link posted in this thread. As is posted in the Comments section at the above link (and has already been mentioned in this thread), Butch Trucks has already stated that he was severely misquoted in the article, Duane was referring to Page, not Plant. Either way, it doesn't change my opinion of Duane Allman, Butch or the Allman Brothers Band in general. I'm just glad I clicked on the link, otherwise I never would have stumbled upon this by Guy Clark I've never heard before.
  15. I like it pretty good. It's basically just Patterson and an acoustic guitar. By the way, I understand since DBT have left New West they will be issuing a CD of outtakes in the months to come as well as a full length DVD of their recent Austin City Limits appearance.

    Pet Peeves

People that call your cellphone from inside the house. Are folks that fucking lazy they can't actually take the time to speak to one another face to face? When my cellphone rings I always answer, I never screen my calls. The one exception being when the call is coming from inside the house, then I refuse to answer.
  17. I believe a video was made for Traveling Riverside Blues to coincide with the release of the first box set. If not that maybe Over the Hills and Faraway or perhaps even both.
  18. ..as Shelby Lynne was quoted as saying on the Record Store Day site last year: "You can’t roll a joint on an iPod."
  19. Stop making sense, it'll give the Plant bashers nothing to go on. Oops, that's already what they're doing.
  20. This fairly recent clip of comedian Louis CK on Late Night with Conan O'Brien pretty much puts advancements in technology (particularly the internet) into perspective: Everything's Amazing, Nobody's Happy
  21. Music Direct is just one of several sites I'm aware of where vinyl (including Zep) can be ordered online. That's in reference to new vinyl but there are also tons of sites (such as GEMM) where you can order used vinyl. Of course, neither are nearly as much fun as rummaging through stacks of LPs at your local record store but since everyone doesn't have that advantage I'd say it's very cool that those sites make vinyl available period.

    Reunion reports?

As far as official statements reported by the press, John Paul Jones most certainly seemed interested in playing with Page and Jason Bonham at least as recently as a few months ago. That project was never meant to be "Led Zeppelin" anyway so no telling how he feels about it now or if his feelings have even changed any at all.
  23. Cool. While I have nothing whatsoever against such discussions I hope you understand where I might find trying to reach such a consensus kind of pointless since there's really nothing to base the rating of a song on other than one person feeling how appreciated or underappreciated it might be.
  24. I guess the first question that pops into my mind is how do you feel about it? Afterall, you are the one that's writing the paper, correct?
