  1. Since I was never really into hair metal Metal Mania was a major tune out factor for me but VH1 Classic does have some pretty good original programming. (or at least it did when I still had cable). I'd even watch That Metal Show since the topics and guests were broader than just hair metal.
  2. Definitely not a flick a really needed to see again but it was interesting, if for nothing else, to see River Phoenix and Ethan Hawke in some of their earliest roles.
  3. Underwater tree at Jiuzhaigou Valley in Sichuan, China
  4. Derek Trucks opening for the Allman Brothers Band at Walnut Creek Amphitheatre in Raleigh, NC on July 4, 1993. Also on the bill that day was Gov't Mule. I didn't see this particular show but I did see Derek sitting in with the Allmans at the Creek back in the early 90's when he traded licks with Dickey Betts on "One Way Out", most likely during their tour for Shades of Two Worlds.
  5. Van Halen Cancels Postponed Tour Dates David Lee Roth Addresses Van Halen Super Bowl Rumors
  6. 27 years ago today Led Zeppelin played Live Aid at JFK Stadium in Philadelphia:

  8. If you've never read Phil Lesh's account of Altamont from his book Searching for the Sound: My Life with the Grateful Dead, I highly recommend doing so. It's as chilling to read as the Gimme Shelter footage is to watch.
  9. Glen Hansard (The Swell Season, the Frames) covered this at the tribute to R.E.M. held at Carnegie Hall in 2009. Seems it's since become part of his set. Not sure if he's actually recorded a studio version of it or not but that sure would be nice. http://youtu.be/hP4IPWm-f90
  10. I'm not a fan of all of Van Halen's covers but I must say they did a mighty fine job with "You Really Got Me". So much so that they sort of made it their own to the extent that it's became just as associated with them as it is the Kinks. As for the songs on Feedback, I would imagine you'd be able to check out most (if not all) of them on YouTube.
  11. Thanks for the reminder of the Raising Sand Revue show at the RBC Center, definitely one of my favorite concerts in recent memory. Also, on this day back in 1983, The Principle of Moments was released.
  12. Chatham County line at Sadlack's in Raleigh yesterday for the release party (which was put on by Schoolkids Records) for their new live CD/LP/DVD Sight + Sound.
  13. Reminds me of the time I saw a kid in the crowd at a Kiss concert back in '76 trying to imitate Gene Simmons by breathing fire. He didn't know what he was doing and his face went up in flames instead.
  14. The reason it's so expensive here is because it's imported from the UK, plus it's a special issue, which runs a little higher than a standard issue of Uncut.
  15. I mentioned charts because there is at least one that reflects the popularity of "Pop" music. When I was growing up it was referred to as the "Top 40". These days Billboard has something called the "Hot 100" which is the modern day equivalent of the Top 40 charts. Your statement that the only music that goes down in history is "blues based guitar music" is pretty misinformed.
  16. Love to see the whole documentary someday but for now here's the opening sequence:
  17. So music that crosses over onto the Pop charts doesn't go down in history? You do know that some band named Led Zeppelin also got played on Top 40 stations on AM (and FM) radio back in the day don't you? Your opinion that only "blues based guitar music" goes down in history is one that I disagree with very strongly. Like I said, I'm not particularly a fan of Billy Idol's music or that of A Flock of Seagulls' but if their music wasn't somehow significant, we wouldn't be having this conversation. And U2, whether you like them or not, have already gone down history based on their output from the 1980's alone. There's much more to the world of music than blues based guitar rock. That may be your own personal taste but it's not an indicator of what others consider historically significant.
