  1. I don't know where they went after the Dallas concert but if they rode on the roadies bus (or van) out to that ranch that might have been what Robert was alluding to. Other than what you've told me, I really don't know anything about the band's concert days in Texas.

I'm looking for confirmation of the date Zeppelin attended a Slade concert in Dallas and pelted them with vegetables. This was undoubtedly on May 17th, 20th or 21st 1973.

  2. I thought the plane trip was from SF to LA. The band was late getting started at the Forum and I thought that was the reason for the concert starting late - they were waiting for Jimmy and Peter Grant to arrive.

They had to resort to a last minute commercial flight from LAX to San Fran. My source

is the incomparable Bill Graham, who had the uncomfortable task of devising an excuse

to tell the crowd. He settled upon words to the effect of "Jimmy's delayed with getting his double-neck tuned just right so they can perform a terrific concert for you today".

The Forum show, the last on that leg of the tour, was the following day. It may have

started late as well but I have no confirmation of that readily available at the moment.

  3. Hi Steve, I was looking for a place to discreetly post info about a Zeppelin tune I've never heard before. I won't link direct until I get permission, but if you search Youtube for Led Zeppelin, posted today, and maybe include Bangor as a search term, you hear it.. Is this pre Wanton? Sounds like 1974, and they never directly play Wanton riffs but I hear a relationship, maybe you will too. What is this? Hope it's a suitable mystery.

Yes, I first heard this when it surfaced about 20 years ago. I have always been of the

opinion it is quite likely an early, slowly evolving version of The Wanton Song. However, there are others who have voiced their opinion it was meant to stand as a separate track and they accept the fictitious title 'Take Me Home' without any qualms.

  4. Rover, I don't have any specific details (e.g., airlines, flight numbers, rental car companies, etc.) and I am speaking strictly from memory (I don't have any articles to cite) but as far as I can recall, during the pre-73 tour years the band flew commercial airlines (e.g., American, TWA, etc.) from one U.S. city to another and, in the pre-limo, pre-police escort days, they got around in rental cars (e.g., Crown Victorias, LTDs, etc.). I think that, right before the Starship came into use, in the earlier weeks of the '73 tour, they traveled around in a Falcon jet. Again, these are only my recollections.

Your memory is essentially correct, and it was on June 2nd 1973 that Jimmy and Peter Grant flew from LAX to San Francisco for the Kezar Stadium concert aboard a United Airlines commerical flight on account of Jimmy's recurring fear of flying in Led Zeppelin's small private jet. This incident quite possibly convinced Peter Grant to proceed with leasing The Starship, which they began using in July 1973 following their tour break.

  5. As the sentences were suspended they would probably have been put on a good behaviour bond. I have never heard that any of them were refused entry back into the US at any time.

Did Grant, Cole or Bindon ever go back?

Yes, there was no reason to believe they would ever be refused entry and certainly they planned to return in 1980.

Richard Cole was quite likely the first to return, as he spent some time with Jimmy in

Los Angeles when Jimmy was on the ARMS Tour (December 1983).

Peter Grant definitely returned. He attended Bad Company's May 15th 1989 concert at the Selland Arena in Fresno, CA and even signed autographs for fans waiting outside while walking back to the tour bus.

I don't think John Bindon ever returned to the US.

  6. After the '77 tour, did John Bonham ever return to the U.S.? If so, what year(s) and what cities did he visit and why?

No, absolutely not. He left the United States on July 26th 1977 for England with Dennis Sheehan and Robert Plant and never returned.

On Feb 15th 1978 the case for the assault charges brought against Bonham, Grant, Bindon and Cole in Oakland was heard…all incurred suspended sentences and fines.

They were not present...they were all represented by an attorney.

  7. Steve, I think it was Kari Wührer...former MTV VJ and B-movie star...if you can verify this I would appreciate it. I know I have a VHS copy of this interview somewhere but I'm too lazy to dig it out! All I know is that it was wild...

Nirvana, the flirtatious interviewer for 'Robert Plant: The Return of the Tall Cool One'

was Carolyne Heldman. Here's a link to her photo:

    http://www.mtv.com/photos/?fid=1563427&pid=2503805

The interview was recorded in October 1988 and originally aired later that same month

as the second leg of Robert's North American tour was underway.

  8. No Steve, I remember Martha, no, def not her. This girl was smoking hot! Long light brown hair...Robert told her how beautiful her eyes were...very pretty girl. Quinn wasn't a looker -

too skinny, no fiqure. This VJ had a bod that must have impressed Robert...anyone have any more info?

Oh, I think I know who your talking about but I'll have to review the actual tape to get her name. It wasn't Idalis but she was also smoking hot.

  9. Does anyone remember the MTV Interview with Robert Plant and the girl VJ who Robert was endlessly flirting with - to the point where the poor VJ Chick was blushing and stuttering during her valiant attempt at the interview?

I think it was during Robert's "Now and Zen" comeback...he had this girl in his sights and wouldn't let her go - on live TV none the less!

Question - what was the VJ's name and did she take Robert up on his "what are you doing this evening?" offer?

Her name is Martha Quinn, she was one of the original hosts when the channel launched in 1981. That particular interview was conducted in Spring 1988.

  10. BTW, this pic is at the Melody Maker Pop Poll Awards Party on September 1975.

I remember Plant family's auto accident occurring about a month ago and

Jimmy Page said about it in interview of Rolling Stone in 1976 by Cameron Crowe.

'My child was too in the car. But it was never publicized,Jesus......'

Why was it never publicized at that time?

Yes, Scarlet was in the back seat but escaped any serious injury. I would say initially the press was only reporting whatever details were released by the band, although in time there was a deliberate effort by some to play up an occult angle with Robert's family as innocent victims of Jimmy's dabbling.

  11. I was visualizing your collection (or a portion of it) on display at Jimmy's boathouse.A step further, have other collectors' memorabilia on display on a revolving basis, like museums do.I have no idea if the boathouse would be conducive for a situation like this,or if local codes would permit such a situation to exist. I picture JP,RP,JPJ,and the estate of JHB,donating pieces permanantly,or on loan for this.To have a connection to events and to actually see documents and artifacts at what most of us consider a quite historical site....I may be off the edge on this...

Your principle idea of a permanent Led Zeppelin exhibit is a topic worthy of discussion.

I think you will find that the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame strives to meet this niche. They

have several items on loan from the band. There are of course numerous Led Zeppelin

items in various Hard Rock Cafes around the world.

Jimmy's former home in Pangbourne (the boathouse) isn't really conducive to an exhibit.

It sits firmly within a quiet residential area and as such there is little room for parking.

Bear in mind the risk of flooding, while minimal, is still ever present! Most importantly,

it is simply cost prohibitive to purchase that particular property strictly for this purpose.

I'd like to think that one day a virtual, online exhibition could be launched. One could

argue this, the official website, is already taking steps in that direction, as the current and planned timeline features will attest.

  12. Laminated Walt Disney World Pass for Promotional Jason Bonham Video Shoot (1989)

Courtesy of Steve A. Jones Archive

Jason recalls filming Bonham's first promotional video ('Wait For You') "in 90 degree heat". MTV aired the world premier on September 3rd 1989 and their first tour began in

    Florida later that month.

Bonham's second promotional video, 'Guilty', was filmed on October 28th 1989. This was

memorable for him on account of having a broken hand at the time.

Bonham's third and final promotional video, 'Change of a Season', was filmed in Australia in Jun/Jul 1992.

  13. I found this amusing. I guess people will bootleg anything to do with Zeppelin. I wonder how many people even managed to get backstage with that pass?

Unlicensed merchandise being sold outside the venues was also a concern throughout this tour. I have the legal documentation which was drawn up to be served against

anyone caught in the act. Confiscation of unlicensed merchandise was authorized.

Bootleg passes are almost as amusing as those with no passes who insist they are

somehow affiliated with the local press/national media and as such entitled to front

    row seating/photographer's pit access.
