Dream live album (imagine...)

If you ask me, the better and bigger challenge is to compile all these songs into a chronological order, the way Jimmy Page had intended to do years ago. That's how I did mine. I personally don't like starting the set with a song from '80 and finishing with something from '69 for that reason.
well the rules said a set list i did a chronological order one up a few but it had to many songs and it wasn't a good set list :P

Suggestions:

- Don't use a 73 Misty Mountain Hop, as it bleeds into SIBLY. I'd use Dancing Days from Southampton '73 or Long Beach '72 instead.

- Not a fan of blending a '70 White Summer with a '79 Kashmir - especially considering the quality of the sources available would not match up well. It'd be better to use the same show for the WS/Kashmir combo, perhaps the Knebworth version you mentioned.

- By using the best quality Dancing Days, that would free you up to use the Vienna OTHFA, which is a scorching version.

- I'm a huge fan of the WLL/Heartbreaker medley from the '73 tour and would probably replace that with the two songs on Disc 4. The Denver, San Diego, San Francisco and LA versions are all phenomenal.

- Nothing from the 4/27/77 Cleveland Detroyer show?

- Another great substitute would be WIAWSNB from the '72 Long Beach board tape.

- Also, The Lemon Song from 4/27 was still being played under its original title of Killing Floor. Just a point of semantics.

good suggestions although, I hated the Southampton show, not the playing really just the mixing, it sounds flat as Kansas. Plant was off to. your right about WS into kashmir, sadly i don't have those '73 shows you mentioned so i don't know..and nice point out of the lemon song

All I have to say is: good taste in specific performances. FYI: Solar's point about WS/Kashmir is invalid because we're talking about a n official, Page-mixed live album, and I'm sure he'd be well capable of blending the two from different years. The biggest conflict here would be the way they were performed between years, generally Page segued into Kashmir at about the 5:20 mark or so, but the earlier verdsions were extended past that and generally made it to about 8-11 minutes. No big problem though, just cut it off early to segue into Kashmir. PS: Generally, I'm really not a huge fan of the WS/Kashmir segue. It just never really seems to cohere well to me. I think WS is better on it's own, preferably in the acoustic set somewhere.

I hated the Southampton show, not the playing really just the mixing, it sounds flat as Kansas. Plant was off too. your right about WS into kashmir, sadly i don't have those '73 shows you mentioned so i don't know..and nice point out of the lemon song

I mixed my own copy of Southamton University, 1973. I split my original recording into multi-tracks, then re-mixed it myself.

11. Communication Breakdown (July 25, 1972 - LA Forum, California)

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

No more "Dazed" or "Whole Lotta Love/The Crunge/Black Dog" medleys, but I managed to squeeze in some more songs without them.

PS - The version of WLL from the 11th at Knebworth is not a typo--I really do prefer that version (having just heard it 10 minutes ago).

* ALS would have the guitar solo from August 4th at Knebworth, but that would be the only modification to this song. Everything else about it would be unadulterated.

If you ask me, the better and bigger challenge is to compile all these songs into a chronological order, the way Jimmy Page had intended to do years ago. That's how I did mine. I personally don't like starting the set with a song from '80 and finishing with something from '69 for that reason.

C'mon, guys, let's do this up RIGHT.

Instead of one unwieldy supershow why not a 9 show box set of magic nights in chronological order? Why 9? One to represent each year the band toured, 9 out of their 12 years together. Led Zeppelin didn't tour in 1974, 1976 or 1978. My niece has a box set of Buffy, about 40 DVDs arranged in a container the size of four thick paperbacks wedged together so this idea is feasibly packageable. A 26-CD live Zeppelin box set could be done this way: one disk for 1968, two for '69 and for '80, and three disks for years '70 through '79. Encore variations and rarely played tunes could be added to the CDs from their respective year (with proper annotation, of course.)

Or even better! Howzabout setting up an ongoing series like the Grateful Dead's Dick's Picks or Bear's Choices but with LZ instead? There's already 36 Dick's Picks ranging from 2 to 4 CD sets; they've been coming out almost as regularly as magazines for years. If Jimmy would kindly turn the Zeppelin archives over to me I will get right on that, gentlemen.

Smart suggestion. OK, then:

1968 - Stockholm, Sweden

1969 - Fillmore West (Any)

1970 - Royal Albert Hall (complete!)

1971 - Paris Theater (BBC Sessions)

1972 - Sydney Showground

1973 - Madison Square Garden (28th or 29th)

1975 - Vancouver (19th)

1975 (2) - Earl's Court (25th, but with Stairway from 24th)

1977 - LA Forum (Listen To This Eddie)

1979 - Knebworth (4th)

1980 - Rotterdam

Too lazy to look up the dates right now

Even girls have those shows in their collections! Everybody's heard those, what do we need them remastered for? How about some whack shit like Offenbach 3-24-73 or St. Louis 2-16-75?

If I could really paw through the annals of Zep's live history I'd keep tabs on what we zepileptics have readily available via Internet or trading----and definitely opt for the road not taken, to quote Robert Frost.

We've all heard more March 1973 shows than March 1971 shows. "Jimmy, d'yer really have all the small hall tour soundboards?" "They're in there somewhere, Dirigible . . ."

Doesn't everyone think it amazing that Zeppelin recorded four studio albums in their first two and a half years together in addition to performing over 200 concerts internationally? Never mind writing and recording and performing; just traveling to all those shows would've jetlagged my ass out.

Just random tracks would not IMHO bring the best out of the band, I'd either stick to entire concerts or pick the best from a show and have them on one disk each.

If I was going to come up with the 4cd release I thought would be viewed as the "best" by the typical fan I might go with the complete Raleigh 7/7/70 and LA 21/8/71 shows. Maybe not as many unique performances as some other concerts but the energy and professionalism is very high thoughout both of them and the setlists are very different. The classic 29/9/71 show with the versions of WLL from 23/9 and 24/9 on a bonus disk would be pretty amazing aswell.

I disagree 100% on just about everything you said..
