  1. All this lyric thing is funny at least for me, as when Zep was active all the lyrics were simply not available. A lot of things, especially Carouselambra in the faster parts, NOBODY knew what was being sung. I agree with the previous posters pretty much about the better and weaker songs, but a bit like Jon Anderson, Robert or Jon could sing entries out of the yellow pages and still sound great. Actually in parts of Robert's solo career he is singing some really bizarre lyrics, but at least he's being creative.
  2. Pretty much a pretty good summary of how things changed with the underaged over time. Literally a 180' or a 240', whatever. Puzzled as well about 4 sticks. The 71' Copenhagen ?? of course sounds a bit different than studio, But IMO the song worked very well live. And John Bindon ?? Peter Grant was out of his mind on drugs at that point, also Richard Cole. I wouldn't be surprised if the band itself, even Page strung out, actually possibly felt very uneasy with what these three maniacs might end up doing. Of course Grant stood totally behind the band, but still his wife's infidelity had put him in a very nasty state. I think the band was probably terrified by Bindon soon enough, probably even afraid of firing him.
  3. I agree that You Shook Me is too bashed as well. However, When fans mention Plant's oversinging,.etc, this track certainly has some of that. But he doesn't do it all the time, and to some degree Zeppelin was about going over the stop. The worst sin in rock is to sound ordinary, boring. I for example find Mick Jagger's vocals on certain tracks somewhat irritating, but he IMO is hardly ordinary sounding as well, although he never could do Plant's acrobatics.
  4. I fully understand the feelings and experiences a Zep fan like Timothy may have about these releases, he never had boots or was around when the band was active. Also, if these releases give you great joy, awesome. What I just don't get is , is microremastering all this stuff each time, going to increase your listening pleasure by 5% or 10% each time they do this dance ?.? It has already happened where the first remaster of a song ended up better than the second remaster. Also it seems like you could remaster a pretty good Zep song like "Your Time Is Gonna Come" to death and eventually the song is now a total Zep classic. But if this stuff makes you happy, so be it. Next is "The Completely Remastered Complete BBC Sessions", with bonus disc of unedited songs edited the first two times around !?!,.,.!.,.!,?.!!
  5. Agreed. I went to a Zep convention in 88', and Kramer was there, freely answering questions. I had enough balls and plain rudeness to ask Eddie if Page was temperamental, or hard to work with. Kramer shot me a dirty look, and was,"next".
  6. This thread does indeed really hit home how many rock masterpieces were made from Zep 1 onwards. There is still some great rock around but bands coming thru with 3, 4 GREAT albums in a row, no way, that's gone. And rock being combined with practically every other style of music, successfully, with bands like Zep, YES, Floyd, etc playing multiple nights, gone. Of course there are really good diverse bands out there, but not like the 70's. I could see Tony Iommi really being into Page's playing, but the influence sounds more indirect than direct, like maybe Iommi had Sabbath experiment with different styles and approaches instead of just playing heavy all the time.
  7. Agree with Plant's inconsistency with the lyrics, but sort of like Jon Anderson where the the singing fits the song like a glove,. My thinking is that Plant could sing the Yellow pages and make it sound great. IMO great lyrics with weak or generic backup are much worse than incredible music with indescriable or nonsensical lyrics( Plant a little bit, Jon Anderson 90% of the time). And Page's habit of cleaning up every minute mistake on live stuff, I'm not interested. The best way to come out with unreleased live stuff would be to leave in some "dirt" for authenticity, but Page simply Will not do that. Too bad.
  8. Sounds good, everyone hears things differently. HTWWW initially I liked, but then started hearing an additional guitar, some of the notes/lines in solos weren't the same as the boots, and so on. Certainly great shows, but Page went too far trying to fix everything. As far back as 75' or was it 77' Page had talked of a chronological live album, but If I remember right Robert was not for that. All this messing by Page is silly, this is not the 70's where Page could do no wrong, everybody knows now that he was sloppy at times, as if Jimmy could magically erase his sometimes sloppiness simply by releasing a totally messed with live show. We all love Jimmy, mistakes and all, and at his best Jimmy was almost peerless, and that's precisely why there is such a large following of the boots.
  9. Remember that the system is rigged and that for the higher ups doors swing open much easier than common folk. Even suspended, not necessarily for criminal action, possibly repeated courtroom improper conduct. Kelly and Balthazor can research further, as I will not talk of things I am not well informed about. The CASE, though, is done.
  10. This whole thing is a continuation of nothing. The court case has vaporised. Whatever negativity the writer fool said, he practically made the Zep truly mythological with that statement that since their demise, the grand majority of rock has been a rehash or regurgitation of them. Just remember that writers often have to spice things up to get published. And the horrible thing, much is overstated, but not sure any other band had Zep's combination of sinister gangster enforcers and portable alcohol/opiate pharmacy from 77' on. Of course the writer doesn't elaborate so you don't know their frame of reference. Mine ?? John Bindon, and probably anonynous others. Why Page or Plant didn't can these psychos, ??? Enuff. Off topic.
  11. Yeah, that Alembic sound, IMO pluses and minuses. The opener TSRTS in 77' , too percussive(bright) but remember that the whole band particularly Page this song then was often chaotic. At some encores WLL into RNR I thought the Alembic sounded great, with Bonzo and Jones really pumping. That sound you just simply couldn't get with Jones' previous basses.
  12. i think lack of massive footage is almost criminal. When you see those compilation videos/dvds, and Page and Plant in particular are just literally being moved by the music they themselves are creating, it's for me a magical sight. But of course, 5 minutes here, 3 minutes there, AND the songs chopped up, totally frustrating. I must say that in a way though, this has added considerably to their legend, as many of the clips are far more powerful than anything in TSRTS. Some of Page's stage moves later75' and on really made the combo of music and entertainment a real spectacle.
  13. Absolutely. Rock'n' Roll at it's heart is at best about total freedom, whether it be about clothes, music, behavior or whatever. For those who weren't around in the 70's, Rock was almost a religion then, a tremendous force, a reason to live. Now Rock is just a fraction of other diversions like video games, cyberspace, etc.. But back to the clothes, I respect some fans not liking some of the wardrobe choices. However I find it almost comical that anyone who saw Zep in the 70's live could possibly think any of the members were too effeminate or "girly". Metallica could come out in some feminine garb, and after 5 to 10 minutes of sonic homicide like Zep, the clothes would just be a joke. But apparently these feminine clothes choices really stick to some. It's just that Plant and Page, yes there were some feminine stage moves, faces, but overall you're talking about a lion and tiger onstage.
  14. Only mentioned slightly is how certain Zep songs sounded completely different live and not close to the studio versions. Some of this was unavoidable, some not. When I first heard WLL on the TSRTS soundtrack, the song to me didn't have even close to the studio version's intensity. Page's solo after the theramin hijinks had none of the intensity of the studio version. It was good, but like later in the Elvis jams, much more rockabilly than rock. I got used to that, and now I love those versions. I also agree about You Shook Me, actually I like the song sometines but Plant in particular gets too abrasive. Also early on many live versions of BIGLY because Page is sloppy on the fingerpicking and Plant is way over the top have little subtlety. Actually as powerfull as Zep was early on, at times they could sound very caveman like because some of the jams got shaky timing wise. However some of this would be expected as everyone is improvising at once.
  15. Some of this is hard to process. Yes the 70's was the glam era, but I find it hard to believe that Robert looked around and was trying to consciously follow the "glam" trend. And Jimmy, the "over sensitive" more feminine than the rest of the group members ?? To me from 75' ( EC) black dragon suit thru 77' white dragon suit, these outfits with Page's stage presence, seem pretty macho as a whole. Flowers, yes, but also many symbols of implied occult power. I would be amazed if somebody saw Page live in 77' and didn't plainly see with or without the suits that Jimmy is definetly projecting a lot of masculine energy. I mean even in the Firm, when Page wore plain white pants and a striped red golf shirt, when he felt energetic, he was stalking the stage with undeniable male force. I have to say that if you asked Jimmy or Robert if they followed 70's glam trends, I doubt they said they did. However if you asked them if they ever dressed unconventionally intentionally overall, absolutely. But that's not the same as "sticking" with a glam look.
  16. I respect others views of the band at times maybe dressing a bit feminine at times. But take 73' as an example. Yes, Plant would wear blouses, etc. But within 5 or 10 seconds of opening with Rock'n'Roll, it is unmistakeable that the band wants to blow the roof off of the venue they're playing. It's like there would be a SWAT team in dresses but all holding AK's.... The odd/feminine clothing thing , I understand people's technical/ emotional response, but the immense power Zep generated live, would some fans actually still be bothered all the way thru the show by the clothing ?? I would admit that if you showed video of the band without any music, to a stranger unfamiliar with Zep, it may well appear odd.
  17. The thing with Plant wearing feminine garb along with Page sometimes, I can't see how it's so bothersome. I mean a large part of Zep's music was so aggressive and macho, some actually thought the clothes are a reason to question their manhood ?? Maybe the blouses etc. may irk some, but Plant almost had girlfriends in every other town, and he and Page of course had their individual sexual escapades. You're not talking Bowie or whatever. I actually thought some of the feminine stuff made the band appear even more macho, because it seemed like a statement saying there's no way you're gonna take the man out of me, and I'm gonna wear whatever I want, F..ck what society thinks. And White Summer, many later versions are almost unprofessional, embarrassing in fact. Page really almost slid into a mild delusional state with those habits. In fact I'm irritated that Page never really went into the addiction and it's terrible effects on him. But his condition did get so bad that many falling so far and hard don't want to speak.
  18. I understand the heavy sexual angle, but that is part and parcel of Zep. Can you imagine the Grateful Dead with no songs more than 4 minutes live ?? My main beef is all the songs they never played live. Some fans automatically say, well you need 2 or 3 guitars, or keys and bass. In reality Zep could have probably played about 30-40% of all their songs live. IMO it was mainly up to Jimmy, and despite his ambition, in other ways he could be very lazy. Like in live Hot Dog, he never obviously worked on the solo properly, as you can't just play semi-blues over country chord changes. I'm talking about Jimmy actually clashing with JPJ, not some totally obscure point.
  19. The picture posted before with Page with the dark sunglasses and hilarious comical smile on his face, with Plant and Jones, is the best way to see this appeal. I wouldn't even bother following this anymore, because it's not like there was any point in the trial where the plaintiffs were seriously gaining momentum. I'm sure that Jimmy, although more serious than lighthearted, will have many belated laughs about this debacle with friends and family.
  20. I love the way Robert talks, having heard/read quite a few the last 5-10 yrs., interviews. And he hardly seemed rattled from the lawsuit debacle. However the description of what he and his band does, as if they were creating some fantastic holographic universe of music and sound, well, each to their own. Robert remains a fantastic singer despite anything. The ideas and obscure "ethnic" musics Robert wants to stir into his mix, I've said before, he needs higher caliber musicians. And the piracy thing, YouTube, etc., if you're a musician 20 yrs old now, and you became successful , getting a huge record company deal probably wasn't even thought about. Of course Robert is very rich and there are plenty of much less successful artists from the past who are denied royalties, very unfair, you are talking about musicians in poverty.
  21. Jimmy certainly should counter-sue, but as far as his reputation damaged, not that sure. MANY people know that the jury had a quick verdict, and that the buffoonery from the plaintiffs will probably eventually end up in shows showing the 10 largest ridiculous lawsuits in US history. Good that many see the youthful spark in Jimmy's eyes, he looks old in some ways, but he walks and moves like someone much younger. Hopefully some music will come out of that.
  22. Yeah, there's no way Spirit could have won that case, opening a giant Pandora's box. Even though someone on this site said in this type of trial no precedents would be set. If that was law, I don't care, how could Spirit winning not have a huge ripple effect ?? Thank God the Zeppers won.
  23. This is music to my ears. Appeal ??? HA HA HA HA HA HA HA...............
  24. This whole thing was bizarre from the start, yet the case was allowed to go forward anyway. Some have mentioned some great points about the appeal thing just not going anywhere. I agree, but how the HELL did it go to trial anyway ?? M( the plaintiff's lawyer) maybe wants to get some settlement from Zep, threatening an appeal ?? IMO this is a nuisance which has tremendous odds at this point from succeeding.
  25. I think the main thing here is that regardless of some minor POSSIBLY murky defendant "isms", the judge himself from the start realized the preposterous nature of this case and was quickly practically obstructing the plaintiffs. As he should. Actually maybe in the future when Page or Plant (Jones too) decompress, this thing may actually be a source of hilarity and totally misplaced effort from the plaintiffs. On cheapness, pretty sure Jimmy threw a huge bash for Charlotte's 30th birthday, but those were the heroin days, he wasn't even present. As far as sweet loyalty, even addicted, etc., Charlotte got some debilitating illness, and even though they were drifting apart, Jimmy said he felt an obligation to take care of her, I find that very admirable, regardless of other indiscretions.
