I just finished reading Lord Of The Rings for the second time and i was listening to LZ IV and low and behold i came upon a stuning revelation. This thread might bore people but i just wanted to know if any body agreed and had any other interesting information on this topic. The following concerns mainly 'The Battle of Evermore" "They capture perfecty the anticipation of a violent event that hovers just over the horizon and the stoic reserves neccessary to meet it." ,I read this quote on Youtube and thought i would elloborate to fellow fans of the 'Kings Of Rock'. Indeed this is very true. The song has strong conotations of 'The Lord Of The Rings' as do 'Stairway To Heaven', 'Misty Mountain Hop' and even 'Four Sticks'. For example the Queen of Light is Galadriel, The Prince of Peace is Celeborn(husband of Galadriel).The sombre mood of the song does depicts the build up to the war with Sauron (Dark Lord and master of the ringwraiths) 'Angels of Avalon' is probably reference to Tir na nOg in celtic mythology, which influenced Tolkien in the writing of the book or more likely a location in the story of King Arthur famed for its apples, which feature in the lyrics, 'The apples of the valley hold'. Plant keeps refering to 'the eastern glow', "tired eyes on the sunrise waiting for the eastern glow" This is synomous with characters in the story waiting for day to travel as orcs hate the sun. 'Ride On' is a cry repeated by various characters throughout the novel such as Aragorn, Gandalf and Theoden. The 'magic runes writin in gold', these are the runes on the ring of power. 'At last the sun is shining, The clouds of blue roll by, With flames from the dragon of darkness, the sunlight blinds his eyes.' These lines speak of the darkness that overcomes the lands of battle in the war. When Sauron in vanquished the darkness lifts. Read the saga and listen to those four songs. Tolkien influences were not Irish.They were Anglo-Saxon,Old English and Scandinavian.One more piece,King Arthur,at least as most know it was a Norman invention. 'And if you listen very hard the truth will come to you at last' But the 'truth' didn't come to Frodo in the end,did it?Only after Gollum played his part. And of all the lyrics RP wrote about the LOTR,"Ramble On" comes close to the book. "Leaves are falling all around,..." Frodo finally left on his and Bilbo's birthday, September 22nd. NickZepp Posted May 30, 2010 Share Posted May 30, 2010 Battle of Evermore has a few. Queen of Light, Ringwraith's and I think Aragon is referenced somewhere. There may be others. Ramble On actually quotes pretty much quote parts in the book and mentions Gullom and the evil one(I think that's the spider) Robert actually made Misty Mountain Hop a double story about a kid having a bad drug trip and it's a retelling of the Hobbit. I think there's a few solo gigs where he's actually mentioned the LOTR reference here. But usually he says it's about a drug trip. But it's both. I believe Over the Hills and Far Away references a song from one of the books. But I don't think that one is really about the Tolkien books per say. I've always thought TBOE was about Helms Deep and that "The Eastern Glow" was in fact Gandalf and the Riders of Rohan arriving at dawn with the sun at their backs.
