At the local record store, I found...

This topic is a place to post photos of the interesting things one discovers at brick and mortar record shops.

People should be finding lots of great music this coming Saturday but also all year round.

Here are a few I found recently:

Banish Misfortune, the 1st LP (1977) by hammer dulcimer player Malcolm Dalglish and multi instrumentalist Grey Larsen. It's lovely.

St. Radigunds by Spirogyra, a reissue album of acid folk or prog folk or whatnot from the early 70s. I think it's going to prove addictive.

And a copy of In Through the Outdoor with its original brown wrapper still on it. No photo since everyone knows what that one looks like.

Has anyone else discovered something amazing?

Record Store Day Returns With First Of Three "RSD Drops"

Record-Store-Day-RSD-Drops-2020-Image.jpeg.20f7908c9936028a15e1f7af0ef15e65.jpeg

A novel coronavirus changed everything this year, including Record Store Day. Typically held on a single Saturday internationally, it's now been divided into a trio of smaller events called RSD Drops.

The original April date was initially pushed back to June, then delayed once more as COVID-19 spread. Concerns over social distancing subsequently led to this three-way-split.  That meant separating the previously announced slate of special releases too, potentially creating some confusion for record buyers who couldn't keep up with the changes amid a global health crisis.

The first of the RSD Drops is now set for tomorrow, with intriguing releases from David Bowie and the Cure, key reissues from John Lennon and Ace Frehley and live stuff from Def Leppard and Pink Floyd. Go to Record Store Day's official website to search for the closest participating store.

Bowie's two-disc I'm Only Dancing (The Soul Tour 74) showcases a recently discovered archival performance from Oct. 20, 1974, at the Michigan Palace, along with three additional songs from his Nov. 30 stop at the Municipal Auditorium in Nashville. Rock N Roll Hall of Fame was recorded during Def Leppard's 2019 induction, and includes guest appearances by Queen's Brian May and Mott the Hoople's Ian Hunter.

Arnold Layne Live 2007, a special 7' Pink Floyd vinyl release, features a final performance by David Gilmour, Nick Mason and Richard Wright - the latter of whom died the following year. Frehley's Trouble Walkin' and The Kink Kronikles compilation have both been out of print for more than three decades.

RSD Drops then returns on Sept. 26 and Oct. 24 with more from the Allman Brothers Band, Fleetwood Mac, the Rolling Stones and the Who, among others. Meanwhile, here's a look at what's in store this week.

Paul is on Sun Records now?

I had no intention of recording an album but sometimes the universe has other plans. What started as a bit of fun jamming on some new songs with Todd Ronning (bass) and Rick Fedyk (drums) both from my solo band and adding guitarist Ray Roper became an album, "Midnight Rose". In a conversation with Larry Mestel and Rob Dippold from Primary Wave Music, who own Sun Records, they asked what I was doing. I said I was in the studio recording some new tracks. They said, "Really...Sun Records would be very interested in releasing those new tracks!" So here we are today. Sun Records is iconic. All those great early rock and roll recordings, Elvis, Roy Orbison, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, also the country greats, Johnny Cash, Charlie Rich. Those recordings changed a lot of lives, mine included. For me to now be signed with Sun Records is mind blowing and something that I never entertained or thought possible.
