Patrycja
It does look atmospheric: I wonder how that configuration affects the sound? I liked the subdued versions of the songs, beautiful!, though the quality of the sound is of course affected by the the recording instruments, in these cases, cell phones. Hopefully Celtic Connections releases pro shots, too. Some more photos from the first night of the Bert Jansch tribute. I didn't realize that the Sensational Space Shifters (minus Juldeh, it seems?) were joining in. A nice surprise See photos of the rest of the performers here: http://www.gettyimages.ca/detail/news-photo/robert-plant-performs-at-a-concert-for-bert-jansch-at-the-news-photo/507822376
Patrycja
A couple of glowing reviews of the first Bert Jansch tribute show: Bert Inspired: A Concert for Bert Jansch, Old Fruitmarket, gig review: Robert Plant and his band brought star quality The presence and piercingly affecting voice of Jansch’s old Pentangle accomplice Jacqui McShee lent gravity 4/5 stars David Pollock @thelatedave 7 hours ago Bert Inspired finale Oli Powell “What a fantastic combination of music, songs and attitude,” reflected Robert Plant at this first of two evenings at the Celtic Connections festival to pay tribute to the late Glasgow-born, Edinburgh-raised folk-rock guitarist Bert Jansch, five years gone this summer. In Plant’s wistful satisfaction lay both the appeal of Jansch’s output and of this group concert, a model of starry proficiency. Jansch’s music stood up to Bernard Butler’s technical fluency while his recording partner Ben Watt sang the softly reflective ‘Morning Brings Peace of Mind’ and the sinister, bluesy ‘Soho’; his resonant and immediate songs surfed on both the pop instincts of Blur’s Graham Coxon (his expressively English singing accent lent ‘One For Jo’ the air of Nick Drake) and the rootsy sensuality of Karine Polwart on ‘Fresh as a Sweet Sunday Morning’; and his attitude was scattered throughout, not least on Ryley Walker’s playful ‘Build Another Band’ and a pre-recorded clip of Neil Young laying down a gravelly ‘Needle of Death’ in Jack White’s Third Man studio. The presence and piercingly affecting voice of Jansch’s old Pentangle accomplice Jacqui McShee lent gravity, just as Plant and his full band brought star quality. His mesmerising, epic takes on Jansch’s ‘Go Your Way My Love’ and ‘Poison’ gave way to elemental shared influences like the standards ‘Satan, Your Kingdom Must Come Down’ and - as popularised by Plant’s old band Led Zeppelin – ‘Babe, I'm Gonna Leave You’. http://www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/music/music-magazine/live-music/live-reviews/bert-inspired-a-concert-for-bert-jansch-old-fruitmarket-gig-review-robert-plant-and-his-band-brought-a6847016.html Edited February 2, 2016 by Patrycja
Patrycja
Bert Inspired: a Concert for Bert Jansch review – fond renditions and a lot of guitar tuning 4/5 stars Old Fruitmarket, Glasgow Graham Coxon, Bernard Butler and Robert Plant join a diverse, stellar lineup and pay handsome tribute to the guitar hero Superstar magnetism … Robert Plant at the Celtic Connections concert for Bert Jansch. Photograph: Anita Russo/Rex/Shutterstock Jazz-folk veterans, Britpop pin-ups, classic rock icons, up-and-coming singer-songwriters – how many other musicians except Bert Jansch sit at such a spaghetti junction of influence? A stellar lineup assembles to remember the late Pentangle founder member and finger-picking guitar hero in his city of birth at the first of two Celtic Connections curtain-closing concerts in his honour. An evening of fond renditions and recollections, and a lot of guitar tuning. Graham Coxon had written beforehand of how nervous he was on meeting Jansch. The Blur guitarist looks twitchy here, too, as he performs an affectionate One for Jo and a “Bert-imbued” solo composition Latte, but returns later, much more at ease, for a tricksy twang on Angie together with Martin Simpson. Elsewhere before the interval we get songs from Jansch’s former fellow Pentanglers Jacqui McShee and Mike Piggott, and Jansch’s one-time mentor Archie Fisher doing Down by Blackwaterside – Jansch’s arrangement that he once famously accused Led Zeppelin of ripping off with Black Mountain Side. Not one to bear a grudge, Robert Plant lends superstar magnetism to proceedings, backed by his superb five-piece band the Sensational Space Shifters. The opening notes of a whispered Babe I’m Gonna Leave You are met with an almost disbelieving collective intake of breath; his second set will end with an entrancingly amped-up Poison. Plant’s is the heavyweight contribution, but the lighter touches shine brightest, such as Bernard Butler and Ben Watt’s shimmering electric guitar interplay on an opiated Soho. Scottish folk singer Karine Polwart jokes that she’s here for “equalities” reasons, but her mellifluous reading of Tree Song feels anything but tokenistic. The largely unknown young American troubadour Ryley Walker will be widely Googled for his fearlessly breezy run at I Am Lonely. The full ensemble gathers at the end and, after a twangy cacophony of imperfect tuning, conclude with a wondrously wonky Dixieland jazz-dappled Strolling Down the Highway that doesn’t so much stroll as sway. Patrycja
^ Cheers, Deb! They sound great! First, some more positive reviews from the first night of the Bert Jansch tribute (31-1-2016). This one's via Robert's site http://www.robertplant.com/#news : Celtic Connections review: Bert Inspired at Old Fruitmarket, Glasgow Robert Plant. Picture by Lorraine Poole (54412691) Keith Bruce, Arts Editor Monday 1 February 2016 Celtic Connections Bert Inspired Old Fruitmarket, Glasgow Keith Bruce four stars THE ambiguity in the simple two-word title for these concerts staged by the Bert Jansch Foundation is entirely deliberate. Of course the artists who make up the varied bill acknowledge the influence of Jansch on their own music, but equally they explore the music that he drew upon. The opening portion of Sunday's concert was as much about his debt to Anne Briggs as his own compositions, with Karine Polwart (joining Martin Simpson), Archie Fisher, Robert Plant and Jacqui McShee all performing songs she had brought to the party back in the day. Crucially, however, there was little "back in the day" about the evening, which was all about inventive cross-pollination, and the parts any member of the capacity audience enjoyed most would be entirely a matter of taste. Simpson's bottleneck slide Heartbreak Hotel and Briggs singing Jansch's lyrics to Miles Davis's All Blues, with Mike Piggott supplying a slick solo version of the riff, were two early examples of that "mixing it up", as Plant put it. Graham Coxon's choice of Jansch tune - One for Joe - was a winner for me, particularly as followed by his own Latte, which he confessed he only realised drew heavily on Jansch's legacy long after he had written it. Bernard Butler and Ben Watt's chiming semi-acoustics and the awed presence of Chicago's Ryley Walker, who will have made a few fans, were other highlights but so, of course, were the two sets by Plant which included some dynamic acoustic Zeppliniana alongside fine distinctive arrangements of Briggs's Go Your Way My Love and Jansch's Poison. When le tout ensemble gathered on stage at the end, there were an unfeasible number of guitars, but a glorious vocal frontline of McShee, Plant, Fisher and Polwart. http://www.heraldscotland.com/arts_ents/14244890.Celtic_Connections_review__Bert_Inspired_at_Old_Fruitmarket__Glasgow/?ref=rss This one's via Bert Jansch Official Facebook https://www.facebook.com/bertjansch/ : Bert Inspired: A Concert for Bert Jansch – Celtic Connections Live Review by IAN TAYLOR on 4 FEBRUARY, 2016 in FOLK FESTIVAL REVIEWS, LIVE REVIEWS There’s a palpable buzz of anticipation around the wonderful Victorian Fruitmarket tonight. Rock royalty is in town. We’re here to celebrate the life and musical legacy of folk icon Bert Jansch, and Robert Plant’s admiration for and musical debt to Bert is well recorded. It will be duly celebrated across the evening. Martin Simpson is up first, opening the show with Jackson C Frank’s Blues Run The Game. One thing about Bert’s guitar playing, as Karine Polwart later observed, was that he made complicated guitar playing sound simple. He did just that on his version of this song, which he made his own. Although Martin manages to do the opposite, he is soon joined by Polwart for a slightly less fussy version of Reynardine, learned by Bert from Anne Briggs, who is apparently present tonight (see article on film screening of Acoustic Routes and Anne Briggs Interview). Briggs’s name pops up many times over the course of the evening and her influence on Bert can’t be overstated. Archie Fisher is up next. Well into his seventies and still going strong, Fisher’s influence on Bert, many of his contemporaries and subsequent followers is unquestionable. His solo renditions of Blackwaterside, Dave Goulder’s January Man and his own You Took The Day suffer a little from inadequate amplification in the cavernous hall, but are heard in appropriately silent reverence of the performer’s lifetime achievements. Pentangle’s Jacqui McShee and Mike Piggott then take to the stage for a delightful rendition of Tell Me What Is True Love, from Bert’s 1971 Rosemary Lane album, surprisingly the first full Jansch composition of the evening. McShee, who sang with Bert in Pentangle from 1967-73, remains in fine voice, as versions of Is It Real, and I’ve Got A Feeling (for which Bert put words to Miles Davis’s jazz number) testify. Next up is Graham Coxon, and the Blur guitarist immediately comes across as a true Bert fan, genuinely humbled to be present. His solo renditions of Running From Home and One For Jo more than pass muster, although his justification for playing his own song, Latte, stating that after writing it he realised that it was “imbued by Bert” is less convincing. Then comes Robert Plant, his rapturous welcome indicating just how large a proportion of the audience he has drawn. Accompanied by his own acoustic based Sensational Space Shifters, Plant offers another Jansch-via-Briggs song, Go Your Way, My Love before delivering a fine version of the blues classic Babe I’m Gonna Leave You, which inevitably goes down a storm. Plant closes the first half with his Band of Joy arrangement of Satan Your Kingdom Must Come Down. The second half opens with a video, originally produced for a similar concert held in London in 2013, of Bert admirer Neil Young recording Needle of Death in Jack White’s Third Man Records vintage booth. Noting the similarity in lyrical themes with Young’s own Needle And the Damage Done is unavoidable. Ben Watts and Bernard Butler open the second half’s live proceedings, with accomplished versions of It Don’t Bother Me and Morning Brings Peace Of Mind highlighting, Watts says, the contrast between Bert’s ‘young and old’ styles. The two guitars are well rehearsed and work well together, particularly on a new arrangement of Soho. The pair are then joined by Jacqui McShee for another Anne Briggs song The Time Has Come. Karine Polwart returns to sing an excellent, polished set of songs including High Days from Bert’s final Black Swan album, and Tree Song on which she does great justice to those simple sounding but hard to play guitar parts. She is joined by Coxon and Simpson for a respectful version of Fresh As A Sweet Sunday Morning. One of the show’s highlights. Chicago’s Ryley Walker provides the transatlantic flavour to the evening, another humble fan whose versions of Build Another Band and I Am Lonely are sufficiently well performed to allow him the indulgence of one of his own songs, Roundabout, which is not out of place. Plant and band return for a rousing version of The Cuckoo, and finally Bert’s Poison, followed by Simpson and Coxon with an authentic duo version of Davy Graham’s iconic guitar instrumental Angie. Finally all 15 performers return to the stage for an ensemble version of Strolling Down The Highway, a fitting end to a respectful tribute show. It’s in the nature of many of this type of collaborative show that some acts are under-rehearsed, that the organisation is less than efficient, or that the technical side of the show is less than slick. None of these faults can be applied to tonight, Karine Polwart making the same point from the stage during her set, and for that credit must go to the Bert Jansch Foundation, the organisers, and all the performers for putting on an excellent show, and a fitting tribute to Bert Jansch. Patrycja
Another July concert has been added to the summer tour! Robert Plant to play Plzeň 08 February 2016 Raymond Johnston Former Led Zeppelin frontman will be with the Sensational Shape Shifters One of rock‘s leading figures will be back in the Czech Republic, this time to another city: Plzeň, on July 27. He was in Brno in July 2015 and in Ostrava in July 2014. He was last in Prague in 2005. Robert Plant and the Sensational Shape ShiftersWhen: July 27 at 7 p.m.Where: Lochotínský Amfiteátr, Plzeň www.facebook.com/events Most of his fans are probably interested in his older material, and he usually sprinkles a few Led Zeppelin hits throughout the show, with different turning up each tour. “Going to California,” “Whole Lotta Love” and “Black Dog” are the songs he has performed live most often. It is highly unlikely he will do “Stairway to Heaven.” He does the old material with new arrangements and instrumentation, adding a bit of world music influence and giving them a bluesier feel. He headlined the Colours of Ostrava festival in 2014, kicking off his show with “What is and What Never Should Be” and building up to a medley of “Whole Lotta Love” and “Who Do You Love.” He did “Rock and Roll” as an encore. In Brno in 2015 he launched the show with “Trampled Under Foot” working his way through “Dazed and Confused” and closing with a medley of “Cross Road Blues” / “I Just Wanna Make Love to You” / “You Need Love” / “Whole Lotta Love” / “Who Do You Love” / “Whole Lotta Love.” “Rock and Roll” again closed the show. With his new group, Robert Plant and the Sensational Shape Shifters, he released the album Lullaby and the Ceaseless Roar in 2014, so far the first studio album with that group. It had good reviews and made it into the Top 10 charts in several countries, including the number 2 spot in the UK, Hungary and Norway. The group also released a live album in 2012. The band is built in part on people he worked with previously and includes West African musician Juldeh Camara, drummer Dave Smith, keyboardist John Baggott, multi-instrumentalist Justin Adams, guitarist Liam Tyson and bassist Billy Fuller. The exact tour lineup has not been announced and dates are still being added. He kicks off the tour July 1 in Belgium. Plant has played Prague four times, first in 1993 on his Fate of Nations Tour. He was in Prague twice in 1998 with Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page on the Walking into Everywhere tour and in 2005 with his group Strange Sensation for the Mighty ReArranger tour. http://www.praguepost.com/night-day/praguepostnews/night-and-day/robert-plant-to-play-plzen https://www.facebook.com/events/490192314505420/
Patrycja
Somehow I forgot to add extra info about the July 1 show which will be part of the Rock Werchter Festival in Belgium (June 30 - July 3, 2016): Robert Plant will always be known as Led Zeppelin’s frontman. From 1968 until 1980 the British foursome was the ultimate rock band; successful, influential, and loud. In his solo career, Plant has chosen adventure as often as possible. His life mantra: ‘Dig deep and celebrate the past. But beware of nostalgia and keep it fresh’. No sooner said than done. ‘Raising Sand’ (2007), a collaboration with American singer and violinist Alison Krauss, was reckoned to be one of the best country albums of the century, and won six Grammy Awards. With The Sensational Space Shifters, Plant delves into African music, Delta blues and gospel. He also comes up with new interpretations of Zeppelin classics. Standards include ‘Black Dog’, ‘Going to California’ and the eternal crowd-pleaser ‘Whole Lotta Love’. The Sensational Space Shifters have accompanied Plant since 2012 on a pretty much uninterrupted world tour. A world of field holler, despair, Levee camp and chain-gang moans; of Saturday night fish-fry and Juke Joint foot stomp. A million miles lay between the brooding pulse of Mississippi Delta life and the sanitized shelter of the timid English boy, circa 1962. 50 years on – drawing from a lifetime of adventures, tracking the dark, beautiful resonator, Plant follows his heart and lifts his voice higher and joyous ever away and beyond. A voice of experience and learning from the sounds of Southside Chicago Electric Blues; of Griot mantras from West Africa; from Louisiana Dance Halls; Greenwich Village Folk hangover; Haight Ashbury indulgences; Moroccan medina breakbeat; the early English radical techno materials, Texas two-step and Bristol dubstep. Before his recent projects in Nashville with Alison Krauss and Band of Joy, Plant worked alongside the very interesting force, “Strange Sensation”, recording the critically acclaimed, multi-Grammy nominated albums – “Dreamland” and “Mighty Rearranger”. luvlz2
Austin City Limits New Tapings: ROBERT PLANT, RHIANNON GIDDENS AND FLORENCE + THE MACHINE Austin City Limits is proud to announce three new tapings. Singer and songwriter Robert Plant, returns to our stage for the first time in more than a decade on March 21, singer/multi-instrumentalist Rhiannon Giddens makes her ACL debut on April 25 and rock stars Florence + the Machine come back for their second visit on May 20. Plant travels to ACL as part of his "Southern Journey," visiting the "places that gave birth to so much of the music I love." with a select run of live dates dubbed the "Blues...Roots and Hollers" tour. The music icon celebrates the American South as a continuation of the eclectic soulful journey he began since leaving Led Zeppelin decades ago. He has spent many years exploring Americana music and America itself, traveling through the U.S. and collaborating with roots musicians, including Alison Krauss for 2009's six-time Grammy-winning album Raising Sand. Plant's acclaimed 10th studio album, 2014's lullaby and...The Ceaseless Roar, combines his love of everything from American country blues and rockabilly to British folk, Moroccan trance music and West African griot into a vision all his own. Joined by his diverse, versatile six-piece band The Sensational Space Shifters for this appearance, Plant adds, "Having just begun work on our new album, we thought we'd take time out to raise a little sand and welcome springtime with one more adventure, another celebration of life and song." link Edited March 2, 2016 by luvlz2

kingzoso
I just ordered my ticket for Robert's show at the Bomb Factory in Dallas, Texas on March 15, 2016. A mere 10 days from today. I had mentioned before that I am not so much of a fan of Robert's new style of reinterpreting Led Zeppelin classics (I prefer them hard and heavy - like the way he did them on the "Now and Zen" and "Manic Nirvana" tours - almost 30 years gone). However, this is Mr. Robert Anthony Plant. When He comes to Dallas, Texas, there is no way that I am going to pass up an opportunity to see my favorite singer and an active real life living legend. Ticket price: $60.77. Edited to add: If there is anyone on this Forum who will also be attending this Robert Plant concert and may want to meet, I should be easy to identify. I will be the one wearing a Led Zeppelin t-shirt. You can't miss me. Edited March 5, 2016 by kingzoso

Walter
Amazing show put on this past Sunday night at the St. Augustine Ampitheatre. His voice was the best it's ever been in the 30+ years I've been going to his shows. The band was as tight as ever! Great night! He hasn't put "the Dog" down yet as evidence shows in the earlier post.... Fixin To Die was one of the biggest highlights to me - but THIS song was THE highlight for me... "The Rain Song". Simply amazing! Enjoy!
