  1. From Twitter: Catchy name for REM greatest hits record
  2. This is from a review that was posted on the No Depression website: Not trying to convince you of it's significance (or lack thereof) one way or another, just offering up a different perspective. I'm still digging on the record so I'm not sure what I'd cut from that particular song, if anything. I know the experimental side of Wilco can be more than a bit tedious at times but so far that hasn't been my experience with this song (or record).
  3. Heather McEntire of Mount Moriah who opened for the Rosebuds in NYC last night For more photos, along with a review of the show from the Brooklyn Vegan, click here.
  4. I'm an Old 97s fan and have a couple of Rhett's solo records so I appreciate the heads up.
  5. Listened to this last night in honor of College Radio Day which was yesterday. Seems there's a day for everything. Now playing:
  6. Southern Culture On the Skids, who recently released an expanded version of their Zombified album, held a contest where fans submitted homemade videos for the title track. Here's one of the entries.
  7. The War On Drugs with Carter Tanton at King's in Raleigh last night. Great show with special guest Andy Holmes from Old Bricks sitting in on acoustic guitar for most of the concert.
  8. Yep, tribute bands are very popular. I just don't care anything about seeing them. One notable exception is an event that's held locally called The Cover Up where local bands assume the persona of another artist. That's usually a lot of fun, especially when it's something completely unexpected. Like when The T's were Bryan Adams. Folks love to hate on Bryan Adams but everyone was singing along at the top of their lungs to "Summer of '69".
  9. The War On Drugs with Carter Tanton at King's in Raleigh tonight.
  10. Based on reactions I've read on various boards about this movie, I was halfway expecting not to like it. Thankfully, that didn't turn out to be the case. Perhaps those that were disappointed in it were expecting something far different, like a thriller or something.
  11. Ryan performing "Lucky Now" on Conan O' Brien's show on TBS last night.
  12. The Beatles doing covers is a far cry from a band out there making a living by dressing up and playing the part of another band. As for Elvis barely writing any of his own material, nor did several other very prominent artists. Citing just one example, most of Johnny Cash's last recordings were all covers, that didn't take away from his originality as an artist because he had the uncanny knack of making other people's tunes his own. That goes as far back as his reading of Kris Kristofferson's "Sunday Morning Coming Down". And again, an artist doing covers is not the same as a band out there imitating another band. To each their own but it's simply not my thing. If I'm going out to see a band perform, I'm not forking my money over to see an imitation, I prefer original music.
  13. Nugent is full of shit. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N7rb3-0n0xQ
  14. According to Kenog's post above (and this link), they're from last month.
  15. From Paste: Wilco Announces Picture Contest for Limited Cassette Run of The Whole Love Contrary to what the Oxford English Dictionary might think, the cassette isn’t totally dead just yet. And now Wilco has announced a competition that will get the photos of five fans on the cover of a limited run of The Whole Love cassettes. The band asks that fans take pictures that are inspired by track names and meanings, and the band will then judge the top five images for the cassette cover. The competition goes until Oct. 15. Photos can be submitted and you can check out more information at Hipstamatic’s site.
  16. One of my favorite concert moments was hearing the Grateful Dead do it at the Dean Dome in Chapel Hill back in '93. Little did I know, until just a few months ago, that someone was filming that night.
  17. I keep hearing about Lydia Loveless but so far all I've heard is this song ("Steve Earle"). Sounds pretty promising to these ears.
  18. You did everything right except you have an extra "http://" in there.
