    ANZAC Day

Tomorrow at dawn on the 25th of April we remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice on that fateful day we invaded Gallipoli (from the Greek word Kallipolis meaning Beautiful City and Çanakkale in Turkish). A whole generation of Australians, New Zealanders, British, Canadians, Indians, French and many other Commonwealth nations were lost in what turned out to be a mass slaughter, for both sides. By the time of the "evacuation" and after the bloody 8 month campaign, Allied casualties (dead, wounded, missing and prisoners) were in excess of 187000 and Turkish casualties numbered almost 175000. In 1934, Mustafa Kamel Ataturk sent this message. "Those heroes that shed their blood and lost their lives ... . You are now lying in the soil of a friendly country. Therefore rest in peace. There is no difference between the Johnnies and the Mehmets to us where they lie side by side here in this country of ours ... You, the mothers who sent their sons from faraway countries, wipe away your tears; your sons are now lying in our bosom and are in peace. After having lost their lives on this land they have become our sons as well." Bless 'em all. While it is natural to celebrate victories, it is also important to remember defeats as well. So as we pay our respects at the many dawn services at RSL clubs around Australia, have a drink and catch up with friends and have a go at Two Up, their sacrifice for our freedom will never go unappreciated. "They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn At the going down of the sun and in the morning We will remember them." "We will remember them!" "Lest We Forget."
  11. I was lucky enough to see him play in the early '60's and then listen to his commentary on radio and tv when he retired from Cricket. Marvellous......
  12. I enjoyed this movie. The Water Diviner is scheduled for a limited release in the USA on April 24, 2015, the day before the 100th anniversary of the Gallipoli (Çanakkale), landing. The Dardanelles (Hellespont) on the Aegean Sea in Turkey is where Troy once stood and Hector and Achilles fell. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt3007512/
  13. The "numbers" indicates the thickness (gauge), of the strings. After playing solid for a while, the grooves will disappear and full callouses will form. Slinky is just the name of those particular Ernie Ball products. I haven't tried coated strings but apparently they reduce corrosion and they last longer. They come in all sorts, wound, unwound, coated, steel, stainless steel, aluminium, cobalt and tungsten. Experiment until you find the best for you.
  14. I use; Ernie Ball Regular Slinky on one of my Les Paul guitars for most songs. Gauges .010 .013 .017 .026 .036 .046 Ernie Ball Not Even Slinky on my other LP for Dropped D tunings. Gauges .012 .016 .024p .032 .044 .056
  15. Seen them live a few months after Live at the Paramount was released in 1973. Unfortunately, Bachman had left the band long before that album came out.
  16. Has there ever been a conflict that wasn't political? I watched American Sniper and as movies go it was quite good. Very thought provoking and sad that he and his friend (whom doesn't seem to be quite as important), lost their lives in tragic and ironic circumstances. I haven't read the book although I did read comparisons of both book to movie. According to one reviewer "The Butcher" and the opposing sniper were characters created specifically for the movie for dramatic effect. But hey, that's Hollywood and it's not the first nor the last time storytellers take licence to enhance "actual" events. I was very sceptical of those subplots when viewing and if it's true IMO Kyle's story was tainted by them. I will be watching the trial with great interest.
  17. After six months away in the USA my daughter is on her way home. She'll be landing in Sydney on Saturday morning. Happy Days!!!!!

It seems fitting that no. 1 plays no. 2 in a final. Sharapova and Williams have played in three Grand Slam finals with Williams winning two to one. On form, Williams should start favourite and rankings mean nothing in finals until the match is over. Neither have won all four titles in one year, so whilst very good players they are not great, just yet. Williams has won two Grand Slam titles on six occasions in a calendar year with three G S titles in 2002 (she didn't play in the Australian Open that year) and Sharapova only one on five occasions. As for the men, I think it will Djokovic vs. Berdych. Tips. Women: Williams in a close one. Men: Djokovic regardless of who he plays.
  21. Yes she loved it. Going from one extreme to another coming from sub tropic temperatures to freezing would've been a shock to her. Apparently the worst is yet to come. I hope you're ok. Boston is getting hammered according to reports too. We are in our summer now and it was very hot up until the weekend when it started to rain here. When it clears up in a few days time it'll be very humid. Thankfully we haven't had any fires on the east coast but the south and west have had a few this year. Stay warm and safe.
