11-6-77 SBD Fragment

Who else thinks that Page's guitar tone sounds pretty damn on good on this board compared to say, Houston or Seattle. His guitar just seems to have more 'grunt' to it. And to boot it is an excellent version of NQ! The guitar just sounds much more aggressive than other '77 soundboards, except maybe not as good as Cleveland.

Hopefully the whole thing comes out soon, this is a very good show for '77.

I'd guess the difference is that the other shows are video soundtracks where as this and destroyer seem like SB recordings. This fagment has been around for years so I'd guess its sadly all we'll ever hear but as you say NQ is a great performance, one of my favourites with that fast rock jam in the middle rather than the blues and/or nutrocker as we typically heard in 77.

But we have accounts from people at the show saying that there were no cameras at the Houston. Also, what about Landover 26-5-77 and 28-5-77. These are obviously soundboards, although there is rumours of there being screens present at these shows (the 30th at least.)

...I emailed photographer John Huntington a question re. this at his site...unfotrunately his response was this...

"I was 13 at that show so really don't remember a lot of

details :-)"

From Photographer John Huntington

**I have the original e-mail, but it's about some possible Landover Still Photos, as I thought he maybe familiar with Landover Capitol Arena

^ I saw that in another thread that you posted it in. Those do look like possible video screens but they are quite small. Hopefully they are though, 30/5/77 was a smoking show and it is only a matter of time before an SBD of this comes out imo.

What I would like to know is how companies like Empress Valley get a hold of these recordings. Not like I'm complaining though ;).

I tend to walk the fence as regards "hoarders". They seem to want to trickle their stuff out, which of course is good for keeping buyers drooling, and drives potential prices up. But they can be very touchy about their treasures, which at times results in their saying "Fuck it, I'm not letting it out" if someone let's the cat out of the bag. IMO, the best approach is to remain hopeful. Let them know there's interest in threads like this, and hope they take those precious recordings to folks like EV soon! ;)

^ But how do these people get a hold of soundboard recordings?

....Steve A. Jones can be helpful in this regard...

Re: I double posted...I thought your post was alluding to "Rumors"......Unfortunately, none of us have a invite to an upcoming book on Showco...they do have quite bit "trust" as mentioned by Steve A. Jones....although, they may "vary' the term on their own terms...

(Empress Valley is very very impressive, I am debating which shows to get)

...I was hoping Photographer John Huntington was able to provide some insight into Capitol Arena...He did state also in his e-mail, he has been "backstage" MSG many times, but not Capitol Arena...

Here is another article on Showco...

In March 1970, Brutsche and Maxson incorporated Showco after earning contracts with musical acts such as Three Dog Night, Led Zeppelin and James Taylor. With Showco equipment and services, the star performers could count on reliable and consistent sound reproduction at different venues.

Did Mr Huntington not recall whether there was screens at the Capitol Arena show on the 30th? I'm sure there would be some other people on the board, or at least on other Zep boards or have posted on the net that would have attended this show.

Page was robbed of a shitload of stuff from his home in the early 80s. Both live boards and outtakes/experiments. There's a start.

*edit to add* I didn't mean to imply that EV was specifically issuing recordings stolen from Page. I read the question as "How do people like Empress Valley get this stuff". Just wanted to be clear I wasn't taking a jab at EV.

Yeah I've read about this. Two women who were housekeepers or something wasn't it?

Yeah, people hired to look after the house. I'm sure SAJ or Otto could produce the appropriate article(s). Sadly, all my shit's in storage. It might be in Mylett's Tangents Within a Framework.

....No, he didn't, but yes, I am on a same "Page" as you are....considering that he was very gracious and cooperative, I am going to e-mail him as you state...(I am sure he can provide some additional input not just for the 30th, perhaps other dates as well...

(He was escorted by his father at that time...)

Yeah I read his site, it was quite interesting. Cheers mate, that would be very interesting.

Personally, I'd rather have the SBD for the 25 May show before the 30th, as the circulating AUD recording for the 30th is pretty decent (whereas the one for the 25th is pretty distant, you have to crank the bugger way up in order to enjoy it!). But, I'm convinced -don't ask me why- Empress Valley or whomever has the SBD's of both those shows...we've seen the 26th and 28th appear- logic might dictate SBD's for the remaining Landover shows exist, and it's probably only a matter of time before they appear. But who knows?

My take on how EV can acquire these recordings? That's easy- they can afford to pay the right price to whomever 'owns' the recordings! Pure Economics 101, supply and demand, all that good shit... :P I mean, I doubt these collectors or whomever simply gives the recordings to the bootleggers, y'know? Almost makes ya wonder what the going rate nowadays is, anyway?

I've never thought the Houston or Landover SBD's were video soundtracks- they all seem to have cuts in songs in the same places, as does the Cleveland board. If SBD's for the other Landover shows appeared I wouldn't be surprised if their "NQ", "BYAS" and "OTT"'s had cuts in them as well, just like the two we already have.

John Huntington's E-mail... (received Aug. 11, 8:22 a.m.)

> 1. Can you provide some details just what type of Video Screens they

> are, Info. ? what puprose do you think they are for?

I actually didn't remember them being used for the concert, but looking

at the photos I saw the color bars on the screen and now I'm trying to

remember. Projectors in those days were huge and very, very expensive,

so I don't see why they would even turn them on if they weren't using

them. Here's an example of the type of projector they likely were:

Unfortunately, no. My friend who I went with is now dead (drug

overdose), and I doubt my father remembers much of anything about it.

> 3. Did you or anyone that you know of saw any SCREENS, possibly for

> filming/many photographers present?

Only what's in the photo--but those are part of the score board and part

of the building.

I don't sorry...

> 4. Do you possibly know or know anyone who may have any Archival

Nope, sorry. I lived about 2 hours away from DC and was only there

twice in that year (the other time for Peter Frampton :-)

Thanks, I still see incoming traffic to my website from that forum,

there's a lot of interest!

Ah Ev, you are definitely correct. There's been quite a few potential releases over the last ten years that were held back because certain individuals just couldn't wait to get the glory and post fragments they were sent on download torrent sites. I'm not saying what or who, merely that the chance was wasted and the owners of these tapes went back into the underground.

There's also the fact that we've all been rather spoiled with new stuff, soundboards, dvd, reunion etc and there's only so much of a market for it. Not everybody is a bootleg collector. Also with the economic downturn we may have to wait until something new pops up.

EV doesn't hold on to anything, they release shortly after getting it.

Oh, and the rumours about the Landover videos are centered on screens only for the luxury boxes. There were no big screens.

The same as Houston, except that rumors are centered on the concession stands etc.
