Greatest Song Lyrics Ever

How's it going "59LesPaul" and beatbo?" I thought that the lyrics to "Lola" said Cherry Cola but I quoted the lyrics word for word exactly as they were printed on the "Lola Versus Powerman And The Moneygoround Part One album. I guess that Ray Davies loved changing the lyrics while performing live in concert. I love The Kinks' "One For The Road" live DVD, it kicks ass! Ray Davies even shows and displays his funny humor side. The Kinks were the first Rock n' Roll band to have two brothers (Ray and Dave Davies) that fight it out on stage in front of everybody. The Black Crowes would soon follow in that tradition with the Robinson Brothers Chris and Rich fighting it out on stage as well. ROCK ON!

i think the everlys duked it out a few times, too....

as for lola, i guess i'm gonna have to drag it out and play real quick....

I have a few choices i can't choose between.

The Spirit of Radio - Rush

I love this song dearly, and the lyrics, which i have memorized, always make me feel something emotional in a good way. 1st choice.

Like A Rolling Stone - Bob Dylan

Wish You Were Here - Pink Floyd

It's Only Rock n Roll (But I Like It) - Rolling Stones

one of my favorite stones songs. perfectly phrased lyrics.

Search and Destroy - the Stooges

"I'm a street-walkin' cheetah with a heart full of napalm..."

edit: anybody that mentions either Kashmir or Stairway to Heaven shall be severely punished. Yes, they are all great lyrics, but too obvious and often-sated here.

How's it going fellow die hard hard core ZEPPELIN fanatics? Again, you have come up with some great choices for Greatest Song Lyrics Ever. In my opinion, The Beatles would easily take that honor with "In My Life." Believe it or not, Marvin Gaye's classic song "What's Going On" featured on the legendary 1971 album "What's Going On" may also rank as one of the Greatest Song Lyrics Ever. Marvin Gaye had so much to say to not only his people, but to the whole world in general. The lyrics go word for word as follows:

Mother, mother

There's too many of you crying

Brother, brother, brother

There's far too many of you dying.

You know we've got to find a way

To bring some lovin' here today - ya

Father, father, father we don't need to escalate

You see, war is not the answer

For only love can conquer hate

You know we've got to find a way

To bring some lovin' here today

Picket line and picket signs

Don't punish me with brutality

Talk to me, so you can see

Oh, what's going on

What's going on

Yeah, what's going on

Ah, what's going on

In the meantime

Right on baby

Right on, right on

Father, father, everybody thinks we're wrong

Oh, but who are they to judge us

Simply because our hair is long

Oh, you got to find a way

To bring some understanding here today

Oh

Picket lines and picket signs

Don't punish me with brutality

Come on talk to me

So you can see

What's going on

Yeah, what's going on

Tell me, what's going on

I'll tell you what's going on - Uh

Right on baby

Right on baby

Janet Jackson once called Marvin Gaye "our John Lennon," I think that that quote is very appropriate that sums up Marvin Gaye beautifully. "What's Going On" is a true testament of Marvin Gaye's legacy. R.I.P. Marvin Pentz Gaye II, Born 2 April 1939, Died 1 day shy of his 45th birthday on 1 April 1984. Gaye was shot to death by his own father. ROCK ON!

congrats on 500 posts!

How's it going "beatbo?" Thanks for the congrats, I can't believe that I made it to 500 posts. WOW! There are so many great songs with great lyrics throughout Rock n' Roll history that I can keep posting them under this topic time and time again. Another great song that should rank as one of the All-Time Greatest Song Lyrics Ever is by a Irishman from Ireland that recorded a song that would be featured on the MOONDANCE album from 1970. The artist's name is none other than Mr. Van Morrison and the classic song that I am talking about is "Into The Mystic." The song goes like this word for word as follows:

We were born before the wind

Also younger than the sun

Ere the bonnie boat was won as we sailed into the mystic

Hark, now hear the sailors cry

Smell the sea and feel the sky

Let your soul and spirit fly into the mystic

And when that fog horn blows I will be coming home

And when that fog horn blows I want to hear it

I don't have to fear it

I want to rock your gypsy soul

Just like way back in the days of old

Then magnificently we will float into the mystic

And when that fog horn blows you know I will be coming home

And when that fog horn whistle blows I got to hear it

I don't have to fear it

I want to rock your gypsy soul

Just like way back in the days of old

And together we will float into the mystic

Come on girl...

Beautiful song, ROCK ON!

ZeppFanForever, why do you start every single post with "hows it goin...[name]", even if its somebody you just replied to already once before?

You mean like this: How's it going "LedNoodle?" I usually like to address and greet everyone by including their user name. The job I do requires me to address people that way even if it means doing it over and over again. I guess I kind of got so used to it. ROCK ON!

I'm pretty certain it's "cherry cola" in the original studio version.. But on the other hand, it was a while since I last listened to Lola.

I met her in a club down in old soho

Where you drink champagne and it tastes just like cherry-cola [lp version:

Coca-cola]

C-o-l-a cola

She walked up to me and she asked me to dance

I asked her her name and in a dark brown voice she said lola

L-o-l-a lola lo-lo-lo-lo lola

I'm not saying that LyricsFreak is the definitive source-and I'm not trying to start shit,either-it's just that I'm always pleasantly suprised whenever I hear this song on the radio and it's the version that says Coca-Cola,and I've always wondered why it was changed in the first place.....

How's it going "Swede" from Sweden? I copied the lyrics word for word off the CD album, that would be strange if there was a misprint on the album cover itself. I just have to ask you this question like I asked one of your fellow countryman here on the forum named "Chuck." Is it true what they say about Swedish women? I hear that Swedish women are wild lovers in the bedroom. What's your view on this? ROCK ON!

How's things with you? Yes, it's hardly a misprint on the cover, unless it's for some copyright reason.

All you've heard about Sweden is true.

Haven't you seen the Italian documentary about Sweden from 1969?

I have to check it out when I get home tonight and listen to the LP.. Interesting stuff. The one I've heard when I was in my teens might've been the single version or something then..

Ticking away the moments that make up a dull day

You fritter and waste the hours in an offhand way

Kicking around on a piece of ground in your home town

Waiting for someone or something to show you the way

Tired of lying in the sunshine

Staying home to watch the rain

And you are young and life is long

And there is time to kill today

And then one day you find

Ten years have got behind you

No one told you when to run

You missed the starting gun

And you run, and you run to catch up with the sun, but it's sinking

Racing around to come up behind you again

The sun is the same in a relative way, but you're older

Shorter of breath and one day closer to death

Every year is getting shorter

Never seem to find the time

Plans that either come to nought

Or half a page of scribbled lines

Hanging on in quiet desparation is the English way

The time is gone

The song is over

Thought I'd something more to say

Home, home again

I like to be here when I can

When I come home cold and tired

It's good to warm my bones beside the fire

Far away across the field

The tolling of the iron bell

Calls the faithful to their knees

To hear the softly spoken magic spells

How's it going "beatbo?" That clip is f*c*ing hilarious huh? Right on to "Swede!" ROCK ON!

what's up, ZFF? btw, 'into the mystic' is a great song, both lyrically and musically. i once took a young woman from brazil to jazzfest in new orleans to see van the man, and i explained to her that although he was irish, she was going to see him sing like someone born in mississippi.

to be honest, you could probably nominate a few van morrison songs for their lyrics-'tupelo honey', 'have i told you lately' is an awesome love song, probably more.

my next nomination for one of the greatest song lyrics, i return to one of the best: bob dylan

Though i know that evenin's empire has returned into sand,

Vanished from my hand,

Left me blindly here to stand but still not sleeping.

My weariness amazes me, i'm branded on my feet,

I have no one to meet

And the ancient empty street's too dead for dreaming.

Hey! mr. tambourine man, play a song for me,

I'm not sleepy and there is no place i'm going to.

Hey! mr. tambourine man, play a song for me,

In the jingle jangle morning i'll come followin' you.

Take me on a trip upon your magic swirlin' ship,

My senses have been stripped, my hands can't feel to grip,

My toes too numb to step, wait only for my boot heels

To be wanderin'.

I'm ready to go anywhere, i'm ready for to fade

Into my own parade, cast your dancing spell my way,

I promise to go under it.

Hey! mr. tambourine man, play a song for me,

I'm not sleepy and there is no place i'm going to.

Hey! mr. tambourine man, play a song for me,

In the jingle jangle morning i'll come followin' you.

Though you might hear laughin', spinnin', swingin' madly across the sun,

It's not aimed at anyone, it's just escapin' on the run

And but for the sky there are no fences facin'.

And if you hear vague traces of skippin' reels of rhyme

To your tambourine in time, it's just a ragged clown behind,

I wouldn't pay it any mind, it's just a shadow you're

Seein' that he's chasing.

Hey! mr. tambourine man, play a song for me,

I'm not sleepy and there is no place i'm going to.

Hey! mr. tambourine man, play a song for me,

In the jingle jangle morning i'll come followin' you.

Then take me disappearin' through the smoke rings of my mind,

Down the foggy ruins of time, far past the frozen leaves,

The haunted, frightened trees, out to the windy beach,

Far from the twisted reach of crazy sorrow.

Yes, to dance beneath the diamond sky with one hand waving free,

Silhouetted by the sea, circled by the circus sands,

With all memory and fate driven deep beneath the waves,

Let me forget about today until tomorrow.

Hey! mr. tambourine man, play a song for me,

I'm not sleepy and there is no place i'm going to.

Hey! mr. tambourine man, play a song for me,

In the jingle jangle morning i'll come followin' you.
