  1. Finally! I've been waiting for your review of this tour to be continued. I'm revisiting some of these and expanding my collection to listen and see how much I agree with.

Cheers mate, a good read as usual. You are a hard critic mate, that's for sure. :)

  2. not as cold as it should be (thankfully) but rained all day. It was clear enough last night however that I got a spectacular view of Jupiter through my $40 Op-Shop telescope. I could make out 4 moons and just see two colour stripes on her. I've never seen the moons before directly - or the colour bands (which were so barely visible I had to have my missus confirm it was actually there) so I was chuffed!

Other big 50th anniversarys coming up: Apollo 11 Moon Landing, Woodstock, Manson murders, Abbey Road.

So the oxygen is going to be sucked up (especially by the Beatles) pretty soon leaving little media space for Led Zeppelin if they don't have a marketing plan in place by now.

I don't know Strider - it may swing the other way where a lot of these 50th celebrations generate a fair bit of nostalgia for all things of that era and actually help with the exposure and consumer interest of any Zep 50th treasures. But yes - they better damn well get on with it!

Maybe unlikely however id enjoy anything new would love info even from the last few yrs. .......the band was always so magical right up till the end ,"in through the outdoor"  IS an amazing album ,sO tired of hearing my brothers on this site dogging our band re' ANYTHING after 77'.   Come on who else could put out something like "in the evening"!  or even "fool in the rain" it's not all bad guys! They were still a biggest band in the world even in 1980!

yes! They were magical from day 1 to the last. Knebworth wasn't bad - but could have been better when you consider the Copenhagen warm ups. But I'll take it! There is no doubting the 1980 tour was inconsistent - and even weak at times. BUT - it also did produce some unrivalled numbers. There are one or two SIBLY that were incredibly beautiful, Trampled Underfoot at times went further than ever before with Jimmy finding a new sound and going so far with it as to match anything else he has ever done live IMO - and Jonesy was right out there with him. At times they seemed to feed off each other and really found something amazing. There were other numbers that were brilliant at times - but massively inconsistent for sure. Studio wise, they never lost it. Always changing. One album to the next, and always no filler - just brilliance. Whatever idea they developed and put their mind to turned into gold. Maybe not in everyone's top 3 albums - but nothing short of GOLD.

Still - no way there will be a doco on that period with any input from the guys. NO CHANCE. And that's understandable.

Page said there were no plans for any more live releases.

Oh, I never heard that. I only heard the "vault is empty" quote which seemed to pertain to studio material. I'll remain hopeful - but I understand great patience is probably required as Jimmy does operate on "Zeppelin time".

  6. I gave Rotterdam Trampled and SIBLY a listen on the weekend anticipating your next pickin' - Jonesy is playing out of his skin with funkyness. The 1980 Trampled are different to any other in that Jonesy and Page seemed really to be feeding off each other and driving the creativeness further and further more so than any other time (for this particular song). Plant seems to love singing it as well and why not? It's a great groove for all.

Unfortunately it's the only way they can really make money, because with a general release of the soundboard itself, it will get uploaded almost immediately, completely killing their market.

Couldn't they do a pre-order system where orders are fullfilled only when enough units are sold? Granted I have no idea of the size of their market and whether that would fly.

  8. So if they do indeed release a partial SB to begin with (a song or two) and reserve the rest for future releases - does this indicate a new pattern we can expect from now on? Any new releases will be chopped up and drip fed out? Gawd I hope not......

What I find fascinating is that now we have stadium bands with choreographed LED backdrops yet somehow Zeppelin inhabits such a small space on stage and still creates power and spectacle. How bands did that with limited amps and sound equipment compared to today is astonishing.

Bonzo said once in an early interview people used to go see the Beatles because they wanted to look at "The Beatles". Zeppelin were more about the music, not the "act" - and that's what people were coming for - the music. I think your observation is correct - it is once again about the spectacle - not necessarily with the music as the main focal point or idea.

The 70's not only had possibly the richest vein for superb quality bands/musicians/singers/writers probably ever, but it was also at a perfect time for having to build success on their live prowess mainly through word of mouth and the print press - not just their LP's. It was the perfect landscape for greatness to emerge. Not because they had all the media tools for advertising themselves - but precisely because they didn't.

These days the spectacle is the attraction. For better or worse.

  10. ^I've got the SB - Throwing the Wild Seeds - another excellent quality '75 SB if u need it Neil - give me a ping.

I gave Trampled a listen - holy crap, it is close to my new favourite. The solo guitar seems unique and some fills by Bonham are crazy unique and GOLD. The guys are in the zone (off chops?) supreme.

I've now fired Kashmir up - they have slowed the tempo down quite a lot which renders it so much heavier.

I'll need to give this whole show a go.

I subjected the family to this when I went up the coast for Mothers Day last weekend. OTHAFA is incredible. So many shows from this period are such good quality and the band is on fire - save for poor old Roberts voice - which doesn't detract too much IMHO. While we have Earl's Court on the DVD, I still think a early 1975 compilation/mash up release from the outstanding boards would be a brilliant thing.

  12. Baton Rouge '75 - Liriodendron SBD-AUD Merge. Sick Again and OTHAFA are spectacular. I really don't think the '75 tour gets enough love. PG content, great opening double (as usual) and Page and Bonham usually CRISP - not to mention the audio quality of many of the '75 boards are almost release quality, Baton Rouge included.

This show Percy's voice is fine with only very minimal cracking in Sick Again and Jonesy is killing it even more so than usual. The end of Sick Again he's so on it.

Possible? Of course. Likely? Absolutely not. How are you going to motivate them to openly and honestly discuss '75 - '80? There are far too many ugly and tragic events to cover in that era. As it is, they can focus on "only good things" and close it out on a high note -- supplanting The Beatles as the #1 rock group in the world.

I can see up to/including 75 - no probs. Earl's Court gigs, the tours from '72 to '75, the tax situation, release of PG etc. Maybe even the car crash?? Up to '76 with the release of TSRTS as the closer maybe?

There is the obvious debate around how much omission constitutes a lack of honesty, but they could well delve into '77 like PeaceFrogYum says. Plenty of positive spin for the lads to offer. But I agree '77 onward is highly unlikely.

Get onboard Steve, this doco is a good thing.

Is it possible that it could be split into time periods like the Beatles Anthology was and if the first one is well received more will follow.

Exactly what I was about to post.

It could be if as you say, this one is well received. I'd suggest up to the '77 tour and probably no beyond for obvious reasons.....

    Great point!

Watching Millennial's take flack for how they lived their lives from a generation that won't know which bathroom to use will be very satisfying to me.

Isn't this every one generation to the next to some extent? (not the specific gender/bathroom example)

The difference now being, the shift in culture and technology is accelerating at a far greater pace making each generation far more different far quicker.

It is interesting to me to think back to that time of hearing live Zep for the first time.

Yes!!! I have traded a good/strong memory for my indulgences (mostly booze) over the far too many years, but hearing WLL from TSRTS for the first time is still with me. The sheer amazement and joy at something so incredible. I'll never forget it. Same goes for IMTOD and D&C (TSRTS) - but WLL grabbed me the most at that time.

Anybody else as disappointed in the "Game of Thrones" ultimate battle episode as I was?

    Spoiler

I thought it was great with one exception. I was almost too nervous to watch it as I expected a lot of main characters to bow out. At least one Stark kid if not a couple, Lady Brianne and the big wranga bloke that was pursuing her, either Jamie or Tyrrian, some shocking moments where favourites were GONE. I was surprised almost everyone stayed alive. But overall, I thought they did a good job on a difficult ep - having a battle last that long can get tired quickly.
