  1. Most of these wouldn't make my list, I just mainly agree with the sentiment that "God Bless the U.S.A." is crap. Read the list here.
  2. Nice feature from The Quietus on some of Geddy Lee's favorite albums. He lists a bunch you'd absolutely expect but he also has a few curveballs hidden up his sleeve. In The Mood: The Favourite Albums Of Rush's Geddy Lee
  3. I'd say "misguided" is a massive understatement when it comes your deceit. Funny that your previous persona here as "Boullion" was also supposedly from Leicester. Small world...
  4. Missy, understood. I don't own any of Joan's records myself because, like I said, I'm never exactly been a huge fan of her myself. To my ears she was always a bit too folkie (in the traditional sense) but I have heard some stuff of hers over the years that I've liked. As for her ratio of original material vs. covers, I haven't done the math but I'm thinking Emmylou Harris' work might weigh out somewhere close to that as she's probably known more as an interpretor of others' material than a songwriter. Back to Joan, here's her cover of Ryan Adams' "In My Time of Need" from Dark Chords From A Big Guitar: ....and just for comparison's sake here's Ryan performing a live version of the song:
  5. Maybe because it isn't actually him (or his "child") in any of the photos he's posted?
  6. From today's edition of The Charlotte Observer:
  7. Breakfast for supper or has it actually been that long since you last ate?
  8. I'm not exactly the world's biggest Joan Baez fan or anything but I wouldn't let one album purchase you were dissatisfied with deter you from buying any of her other records. A number of years ago I saw her during the traveling version of the Newport Folk Festival when it came to Walnut Creek Amphitheatre in Raleigh and really enjoyed Joan's set much more than I was expecting to. Her impersonation of Dylan (which was dead on, btw) had everyone rolling in the aisles. Not long afterwards she released an album of covers called Dark Chords From A Big Guitar which featured the works of Ryan Adams, Caitlin Cary, Steve Earle, Natalie Merchant, Gillian Welch and others that was pretty impressive. I'm not sure if it would change your opinion of her but I'd hate to see someone write her off just because of one album they didn't particularly care for.
  9. Like I said, there's not many. It's a rare gift for a solo performer to being able to do that. I'd say Dylan is another but he usually performs with a band these days.
  10. I'm not trying to be argumentative but for all anyone knows he plays everyday and just has no real desire to perform in front of a live audience. Only Page knows for sure. Back to Neil, I've never seen him solo but it takes a special gift to be able to pull that off. Very few seem to be able to do that. Todd Snider would be another one. Armed with just a guitar, a harmonica and his wit he can hold audiences in rapt attention for two hours.
  11. Not that he couldn't pull it off but since Page isn't a vocalist I don't think it's really a fair comparison.
  12. Seems appropriate for a Led Zeppelin board...
  13. Wave photographer Clark Little hard at work in Hawaii
  14. I seem to recall Roth "surviving" quite fine when he went solo. Fast forward to their most recent reunion with him and Van Halen (the band) was pretty much a lost cause prior to Dave rejoining the fold. At that point Dave wasn't exactly topping the charts but he was doing better than VH. That's not saying much but it's not like he needed them in order to survive.
  15. Yep, I thought I had posted the trailer for Moonrise Kingdom here but evidently not. I liked Darjeeling Limited and Life Aquatic. I still haven't seen Fantastic Mr. Fox. When this board was more active you were more likely to find people that were into movies and music that were outside of the mainstream. These days, I get the impression that aside from a precious few, most of those sort of posts fall on deaf ears.
  16. Some of my favorite albums of all time came out in the 00's including the Drive-By Truckers' Southern Rock Opera. Another one would be Megafaun's Gather, Form and Fly which was released in 2009. More recently I would name Mount Moriah's debut, which was released last year. Still lots of great music being made out there and nowadays there's even more ways to be exposed to it than ever before.
