  1. There's no video clips of it out there (at least that I could find) but John Campbell did a pretty nice version of When the Levee Breaks that can be found on his 1993 Howlin' Mercy album. Review from AllMusic.com: Slide guitarist and songwriter John Campbell was a man driven. Before his untimely death, he had pulled out all the stops to play a music that was full of mystery, pathos, dark energy, and plenty of rock & roll strut 'n' growl; it could be frightening in its intensity. Howlin' Mercy was the last of two recordings for Elektra, and is by far the heavier of the two. As displayed by its opening track, "Ain't Afraid of Midnight," Campbell was a considerable slide guitarist who owed his skill to the bluesmen like Lightnin' Hopkins (from his home state of Texas), Fred McDowell, and a few others. His solos are wrangling, loose, and shambolic; they are undeniably dark and heavy. They cut with elegance across the rhythms and melodies in his songs. This is followed by a version of "When the Levee Breaks" that is a direct counter to and traditional reclamation of the Led Zep version and places it back firmly in the blues canon. As evidenced by "Saddle Up My Pony," Campbell was equally skilled at transmuting the Delta blues and framing them in a very modern context without taking anything away from their chilling, spare power and poetry. And in the modern rock and blues idiom, he was a master, as evidenced by the stomp and roll of "Firin' Line"; "Written in Stone"; and the epic, swamp blues cum overdriven scorcher "Wolf Among the Lambs." This final moment is perhaps Campbell's greatest on record in that it embodies all of his strengths and reveals none of them to be contradictions. Campbell was living and playing in New York at the end of his life, and that city's conflicting energies are reflected in his playing and writing. They needed each other, it seems, and if ever there were a Delta blues record that visited the Texas roadhouse and settled on the streetcorners of NYC, this is it. Awesome.
  2. According to interviews I've seen with Chris Robinson, working with Page is apparently not an experience he choses to repeat again. Not because of Page himself but evidently he didn't get the biggest kick out of performing Zeppelin songs. As for Lambert, I imagine it'll be a cold day in hell before Page, Jones and Jason Bonham are in a band fronted by an American Idle contestant. Not to mention, when they were supposedly searching for a singer Jones said they weren't looking for someone that was a Robert Plant soundalike or a clone to sing Led Zeppelin songs.
  3. Classic Rock radio isn't a genre, it's a format. Well, if it's a "Classic Rock" station they're not going to be playing new music anyhow. And yes, there are stations that play both old and new music. They may be in the minority but they are out there. Playing new music isn't an attempt to "reform" anyone, it's how all Album Oriented Rock radio stations used to be. My problem with Classic Rock radio isn't that they play Led Zeppelin, it's that they play the same handful of songs by the same artists over and over again. Again, Classic Rock radio and satellite radio aren't the only ones that play Zeppelin. There are still radio stations that play new and old rock n' roll. Can't say that I agree that Led Zeppelin or Classic Rock radio are a "genre unto themselves".
  4. That was merely a reference to sites where any comments not completely complimentary of the artist are removed (and yes, they do exist). I wasn't suggesting that should happen here. I also don't think it means I dislike an album if I pick it as my least favorite. It simply means there are albums I may like more.
  5. Nor did I suggest that you (or anyone else for that matter) did. I just don't see the harm in such a thread, nor do I find it negative. Like I said, I love all of the albums but I definitely have preferences when it comes to all of the artists I'm a fan of.
  6. I love all of their albums too but some more than others. Having discussions about your least favorite songs, albums, concerts, etc. sort of comes with the territory with messageboards. I can't really say I see anything "negative" about that. Just because I name an album or song as a least favorite doesn't mean I hate it. Would folks prefer a board where such conversations aren't allowed? I know I sure as hell wouldn't.
  7. From Pearl Jam's website: PEARL JAM SCHEDULED AS MUSICAL GUEST FOR JUNE 1ST PREMIERE OF “THE TONIGHT SHOW WITH CONAN O’BRIEN” Pearl Jam is scheduled to appear as the inaugural musical guest for the June 1, 2009 premiere of “The Tonight Show With Conan O’Brien.” The band will perform songs from their upcoming studio album. Conan O'Brien, the dominant late-night host at 12:35 a.m. (ET) for the past 14 seasons, will succeed Jay Leno as host of the preeminent series on late-night television, NBC's "The Tonight Show," on June 1, 2009. Please check local listings for air details.
  8. How can everyone not just adore joerocker and every thread he starts and/or posts in?
  9. Just curious as to how the advent of digital music technology would have changed anything. Do you mean a re-release of all the albums with songs tacked onto them from Coda that came from the same sessions/time period as those respective albums? I know some folks don't like the idea of bonus tracks being included on albums because they feel it takes away from the flow of the original record. Personally, that has never really bothered me but I know some fans aren't too fond of it. Even more so, I know none of us are too fond of buying the same albums over and over again. As long as you have a CD burner (or at least access to one) you should be able to make copies of all of the original albums with the tracks from Coda included on the appropriate ones.

You sure that was a string?

  15. I've listed movies in this thread I've seen at home and in theatres, both new and old.
  16. I think these threads are as inevitable as ones about your favorite songs, albums or concerts and they're just as vital and healthy as those type of discussions. I have my least favorite songs and albums by all the artists I'm into, it doesn't mean I hate those songs, records or the artists that recorded them.
  17. I don't really keep up with celebrities enough to get sick of them. Though no one can ever get enough of the Hoff.
  18. I try to never make the mistake of assuming anything. By the way, here's the quote I was thinking of (which wasn't from John Paul Jones): "Whatever this is, it is not Led Zeppelin," says a rep for Page's management company, QPrime. "Not without the involvement of Robert Plant." This comes from the Zeppelin Members Seek New Singer article which appeared in Rolling Stone last November.
  19. I thought I remember seeing a quote from Jones in that regard but I may be wrong. In any event, I definitely don't recall anyone saying it would be called Led Zeppelin.
  20. You never can tell but I get the impression they're done with those for a while. If anything, we'll see a continuation of the current Star Trek crew next.

It doesn't solve the song or cereal mystery but there's photos of a couple of Bobby Sherman records from cereal boxes at this link.
  22. Ever since their demise in 1980 there's been rumors and speculation about a reunion. I imagine those will continue for a very long time to come.
