Robert Plant, Band of Joy, June 24, 7 p.m., Salle Wilfrid-Pelletier, PdA (Événements spéciaux TD series) - Nostalgists, keep moving, because there’s no looking back here. Yes, Band of Joy was the name of one of Robert Plant’s very first bands-accompanied by a certain tub-thumper of note named John Bonham-but that’s where the flashback ends. Flashback? Perhaps to an era when this particular British singer cut his chops singing songs by previous legends, and above all expressed the freedom of a 17-year-old with his own legendary future ahead of him. Because Band of Joy is an expression of freedom, the singer’s own songs, and his versions of songs by others (Los Lobos, Low, trad songs…). However, can we truly speak of “other people’s” songs when the unique voice and incredible interpretive skills of this former Led Zeppelin singer give them such wonderfully renewed life? Born in Shiroishi, Japan, Mutsumi Takahashi immigrated to Canada with her family and spent a brief amount of time in the Toronto area before moving across province to Montreal. Mutsumi's interest in the news world began at Concordia University on the Radio Sir George broadcast where she served as a reporter. Graduating in 1979, she had worked her way up the ranks quickly and become the News Director of RSG before her graduation. As reported by Vanier College in Montreal, Takahashi was, "Never one to do be satisfied with doing just one job well, Mutsumi looked for more challenges. During her time at Concordia she was a reporter for the student newspaper The Georgian, and hosted a series of interview programs for Concordia University TV (CUTV) in conjunction with CTV Montreal, then known as CFCF." Takahashi first entered the professional arena as an intern at CKGM and shortly after moved over to CJFM as a newsreader and interviewer. It was in 1982 that Takhashi finally arrived arrived at CFCF as a news reporter. It was only another 4 years later in 1986, and with an impeccable record as a reporter for the network, that she was called up to the big leagues as anchor of the evening news along side then co-anchor Bill Haugland. After 10 years of sharing the desk with Haugland, his retirement made room for Takahashi to share the anchor seat with her current counterpart Todd van der Heyden. Over her career Mutsumi Takahashi has become a trusted and well respected member of the media in Montreal, and has been voted several times by the Montreal Mirror's Best of Montreal polls as "Best Local Newscaster." Behind the camera in her personal life, Takahashi devotes a great deal of her time as an active volunteer for various AIDS organizations, only pulling herself away to spend time playing piano for her dogs, and knitting up a storm while diving into a new book. Mutsumi Takahashi is the living realization of what can happen when passion, persistence, and personality are brought together to realize a personal goal. For that matter, everyone from Stevie Ray Vaughan to Steve Earle have played the Montreux Jazz Festival. Jazz Fest in New Orleans has also always featured a diverse roster of artists that don't necessarily come from the jazz field. I think that's the point, jazz is a fusion of styles and the line up of these festivals is an effort to reflect that. Given he will have already toured across North America three times with Band of Joy and played festival dates it's doubtful he'd return with them again until they have new material to present. Do you have any idea why this tour is so different from the others? Nothing seems to be the way Robert usually tours. Maybe it has to do with the other band members' schedules? Not liking it. He visits Las Vegas once in a while, but not always. This tour he has scheduled time for songwriting, so by the time he finishes that project and the other tour dates it could easily be summer and 115 degrees in Las Vegas nearly every day in July. Las Vegas is a good location for concerts in autumn, winter and spring. Last year everyone tried to escape Las Vegas in the summer because it was usually way too hot for anything but survival of the fittest during that season. He will tour eastern Europe in areas that are more easily accessible during summer, Saint Petersburg, Russia, for instance, which is a bit of a drive to Atlantic City. Winters in Saint Petersburg are forbidding, so that explains why he will go there in the summer. He is pretty well booked through April. On May 1 he goes east to Wilkesboro, North Carolina, which is close to Atlantic City. Then depending on his schedule in May and June, I suppose that he could squeeze Atlantic City into his calendar. On June 12 he will travel to the Bonnaroo Festival in Tennessee, and then to Telluride, Colorado in June 16-19. Then he has a date on June 24 in Quebec, Canada. There may be room in his schedule for Atlantic City before he goes to Rome, Italy on July 19. July and August are all about Italy, France, Russia, Poland and Belgium. There are more dates to be announced, so you can hope for Atlantic City. Las Vegas had highs up to 116 degrees last summer. The highest record high in Las Vegas was 118 degrees in July. According to the Las Vegas Sun last year, "July in Las Vegas entered the record books as the warmest month in recorded weather history." Temperatures are expected to rise this week in mid-March towards 80 degrees in Las Vegas. Last year in October it cooled down to 100 degrees. Or maybe that was November. If he comes to Las Vegas in the summer he should check the weather first and book at the last minute. And bring an icicle with him. The average low temperature in July was 85.7 degrees, which set a record for the warmest average low during any month in the city's recorded history. His tours have not been consistent as far as playing all the same cities every time. I think it's great he's done several gigs in Florida as he's not toured there for several years and nice those folks get the chance to see him. ALL gamblers I've ever seen smoke and at least Buddy has had a heart attack and would be foolish to continue to play in those dens of iniquity. I hope they're smart enough. This was from an article about 3 years ago. Yesterday, USA Today reported that smoking will no longer be allowed on the gambling floors of Atlantic City's casinos. Effective October 15, the only place you'll be able to light up in an Atlantic City casino is inside a smoking lounge. While many casino employees are thrilled with the smoking ban, casino owners aren't so happy. In fact, Donald Trump, whose company owns three Atlantic City casinos, is urging New Jersey casino owners to sue against the new law, according to MSNBC.com. Owners fear profits will fall once the smoking ban takes effect. What do you think? Should the Atlantic City Council be able to decide whether gamblers can smoke in casinos? Take our poll or leave a comment. Seems as though it's still allowed in Nevada. I know some game rooms are half and half. That's like saying "I'll pee on this side of your drinking cup and you can just drink from the other side ! Maybe smarter heads have prevailed and banned it in theatre type settings, and I mean hermetically sealed not an 'area' for smoking that doesn't contain it. I'd even go to NYC if he could possibly squeeze in one of his "special" shows like the Bowery. Still kicking myself for blowing off the NYC dates. I guess I was sure he'd come to the shore.
