Fall Sneezes

With the new season and weather change, colds, flus, and sinus problems are going to be acting up!

I'm just wondering if any of you have any remedies (natural or home), medications, over the counter pills, or foods that you use to stay healthy or particularly find helpful in batting away all illnesses that come with the fall air? (Of course I'm not expecting any hardcore medical advice)

-I often get sinus infections and still have not found a medication that can keep me up and moving!-

A balanced diet, rich in berries and greens seems to do the trick. I am a total foodie and respect myself for eating healthy food. For example breakfast in the working week i always have: A Cereal, blueberries with low fat natural yoghurt and maybe a passion fruit on the top, a glass of OJ ( i wish it could be freshly squeezed but we don't produce them and oranges are expensive here) and half a red grapefruit.

lunch could be anything but generally a sarnie and a yoghurt

Dinner is freshly cooked with fish apperaing at least twice a week, Loads of greens and never never ever have processed foods or take outs.

I drink wine, red mostly but not to excess and rarely have a hangover.

I haven't had the flu for years and rarely get a cold. Maybe it's because I live in an old house. We have central heating and a woodburner in the lounge but with wood floors you always have fresh air coming in. New build houses seem to me to be insulated to the point if suffocation with the emphasis on keeping air out. Germs love the warm. I live in the country so maybe it's the lack of people around to spread germs.

Sinus problems - can't help you there, a Ear Nose and Throat man should give you an answer?

So to sum Up. Eat well, drink a couple of glasses of red, live in an old house in the country, get a woodburner and avoid contact with humans!

I suffer with my sinuses, I haven't had a cold or flu for over 20 years, but in the last few days my sinuses have become particularly painful, and when I do manage to blow my nose a horrible Orange substance comes out. I have tried various so called remedies but to no avail. Any suggestions, I am not overweight or have any other allergies.

Sinus irrigation can be helpful. The old time remedy of warm water and salt can do the trick but there are many over the counter pre mixed products out there. Go easy with it though or you'll end up with unwanted fluid in your ears . If you buy an over the counter product I'd suggest getting one that has a "regular or light flow".

Again if you suffer from sinus problems go see the Ear Nose & Throat Doctor. Don't waste your time and money on "so called" remedies. And if a substance comes out that looks at all weird then as a matter of course you should have it checked. The worst is one of those Sinex Nasal Spray things. OK for a few hours then it's back to like you've had a gram of coke. ( and if you've never had a line of the Bolivian Marching Powder then that's what it's like). Horrible nasty stuff

I agree, seeing a specialist would be a good idea and staying away from decongestant sprays is good advice as well. However, don't confuse those sprays with sinus irrigation products. Moisture is good for the sinuses

Drink Orange Juice every day in the morning.

I got the hubby a neti pot a couple of years ago cuz he suffers from sinus and allergy problems all the time. He uses it quite regularly and say it helps him.

I also have the neti-pot and it's great!! Occasionally it burns a bit, but that's probably because I'm using it wrong

All of your suggestions sound great. Also, I heard of sinus surgery for extreme problems; has anybody had that and does it work?

I know a few people who've had it and they found it to be a bit of a waste of time. More pain than gain. Still, if your problem is severe , it's probably worth your while to visit to an ear, nose and throat doctor.
