Bryn-Yr-Aur
I'm new to collecting vinyl. Does anyone have any opinions on collecting Zeppelin on vinyl. Which pressing are best, e.g. - reissues vs originals? I love me some JPJ and want to hear the bass clearly. Thanks in advance.
pageluvva
I love that JPJ is a priority for you. Me too brother. me too. Check out some of SteveZ's bootleg remasters, he too loves JPJ and puts him high in the mix.
Bryn-Yr-Aur
Thank you man. I will keep an eye out for those boots.
MikeyB
Noobie here...by "bootleg remasters" are you refering to live recordings, or "homeade" remasters of the original (commercially-released) LPs?
Zep Hed
Hi, Mikey and welcome. Bootleg remasters are live recordings remastered by individuals - not unlike you or me - but who have a particular talent and technical expertise to touch up the original source be it soundboard or audience tape. sixpense
I picked up the three album set (LZ1, Fourth Album, Presence) from Walmart which include the backstage replica pass. I believe they should be the same pressings as the remastered sets released recently. I played the first album and the fourth album. I heard no differences in the first album. It does sound clearer especially the guitars an Dazed and Confused but I believe that is probably because I replayed the remastered album quite a bit and probably had a effect on the sound quality after quite a few plays. What surprised me was the fourth album. Specifically the track Rock and Roll. I noticed quite a bit of delay. (especially at the end of the track) I went back and listen to the album from my Super Deluxe package and it didn't have this noticeable delay at the end. I'm wondering if this relates to a pressing issue. I also noticed one section of some background vocal on the Battle of Evermore (that was much clearer) but have not had a chance to compare it to the Super Deluxe version yet. I haven't picked this vinyl set up yet, but it seems very unlikely that this pressing is any different than the last one. Anyone else do a comparison? sixpense
I also went back and listened to Babe I'm Gonna Leave you and compared the Walmart version to the reissue album and cd versions. The final chorus section has the electric guitar buried in the mix. (for the final chorus only)

It is widely believed that the most audiophile quality is the first press made in England. Having in the collection a fairly large number of the first and later editions made in the USA, England, W. Germany, France, Japan etc, at least for the first 3 albums, I can confirm this. Since the 4th album, this is very subjective, but some US editions sound more interesting, IMO. From my point of view, if the English first presses are considered audiophile quality, then the American ones are the flesh and blood of real hard rock music. At the same time, some W. Germany editions (original) have a very good bass, such as LZ II. As for the reissues, the later releases, say since the late 80s, sound completely different, with a different remastering, from my point of view with a clear touch of digitization. In this sense, if the price does not matter, then the UK originals (they are also the most expensive) have a collector's value. If we start from the value for money, then first of all you need to buy the best preserved LPs, and quite good sound quality are American reissues of the 70s, the same Monarch presses, as well as the first Japanese editions, which have both the envelope and the vinyl itself of excellent quality by themselves. At the same time, the Japanese editions included the lyrics, and the first album was released in a gatefold sleeve (original Nippon Grammophon green / light blue label). There's certain original US pressings that are possibly better to my ears than the UK one.

Are you sure it is the afternoon show? Soundquality of the evening show is much better and the performance is legendary. Anyway, the Casino label is known for quality releases, I have their release of the Berkely show on 14th Sept. 71, a very good sounding pressing. Yellow and turquoise vinyl, 200 numbered copies each. The artwork is an exact copy of "Storming The Big Apple" CD boot by Eat A Peach label. I own this boot but can´t recall the sound quality of the afternoon show as I listened to it once only, but the evening show has certainly superior sound. According to LZ Database there are 2 audience recordings: Source 1 has very good (!Audience boot grading!) sound and ends after Moby Dick. Source 2 for WLL, medley and final encore CB. Second source is graded "Good"- which means it sounds terrible, as if the taper had positioned the microphone in his rectum. I think I will pass on that one.
