Guitar Player magazine to cease print publication

by Jackson Maxwell

Guitar Player magazine, the world's oldest continuously published magazine devoted to guitarists, guitar gear, and instruction, will cease print publication after 57 years, its Editor-in-Chief, Chris Scapelliti, announced today.

The magazine's final issue will go on sale next week, October 15, and will feature a conversation with Jimmy Page about the gear he used in Led Zeppelin's catalog, and his newly re-kindled relationship with Gibson.

Founded by Bud Eastman, Guitar Player was a pioneering publication, capturing the excitement and innovation driven by the electric guitar's post-Beatles explosion into a regular print publication for the first time.

This must be the 10th time Guitar Player has put Page on the cover and run a feature on the gear he used in Led Zeppelin. Pointless repetition of worn-out features coupled with silly Top 25 lists is the universal death rattle for all the guitar magazines still being published. The younger generations ain't interested and aren't playing guitar.

I’m hoping Page will tell us something we don’t already know and subjects that he hasn’t covered before, like why he had to start using the double neck, how he acquired his number one LP, that he actually used a tele on the first album, etc

but it is a shame another magazine is closing down

The Gibson EDS-1275 double-neck guitar was created so Page could play the acoustic and electric 6-string and 12-string parts of Stairway to Heaven on one guitar during live performances. In addition to its workability for live shows, Page found that leaving both necks “active” resulted in an enveloping tone thanks to the sympathetic resonance of the 6-string neck – something only possible on a double neck.

I was being sarcastic, obviously not very well. but, even when he talks about guitars and guitar playing he tends to say the same things he has done for the last thirty years. He seems unable to open up about anything

I agree with the majority of comments here.  Guitar Player could not have picked a more pointless topic..  By the way, who cares about Jimmy's new association with Gibson?  Jimmy does not play the guitar anymore! Perhaps, Guitar Player will ask him if he is working on anything new and we could hear the usual refrain from Jimmy that "he has too busy" and that "he might do something next year."  Ugh.

This raises a good point and that is Page as an artist is nearly 30 years or more removed from his last original output. So frankly it's impossible for him to discuss anything new, and unfortunately this has led to Page becoming the Groucho Marx of rock. "In my day..." It's all been said and there's really nothing more to say. That's not a knock on Page the person -- I don't doubt h'es living his best life on his own terms and may he live to 100 -- but it is indeed a knock on this tired worn-out format called guitar magazines.
