  1. This is more "lost classic" than "one hit wonder" because April Wine had some other hits but none quite as catchy as this: This one here is definitely "one hit wonder" material: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=STiuregSvHg
  2. If that were the case it should read "Plant Does Letterman".
  3. Maybe he can take the high parts on "The Battle of Evermore".

From American Songwriter: Steve Earle Readies New Album, Novel: I’ll Never Get Out Of This World Alive By Evan Schlansky On April 26, New West Records will release I’ll Never Get Out Of This World Alive, the new, T Bone Burnett-produced studio album from Steve Earle. The album, which derives its name from a Hank Williams song, is the first collection of new material from Earle since 2007’s Grammy-winning Washington Square Serenade. “They are all, as far as I can tell, about mortality in one way or the other; death as a mystery rather than a punctuation mark or at least, a comma rather than a period,” writes Earle of the new songs in the album’s liner notes. Two of the album’s tracks (“God is God” and “I Am a Wanderer”) were covered by Joan Baez on the 2008 Earle-produced album, Day After Tomorrow. “Heaven Or Hell” is a duet with wife Allison Moorer, and “The City” previously appeared in the HBO show Treme. (Earle will be rejoining the cast of Treme this year for the show’s second season.) I’ll Never Get Out Of This World Alive is also the name of Earle’s debut novel, which is due May 12 via Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. It tells the story of Doc Ebersole, a doctor who is haunted by the ghost of his former patient Hank Williams. I’ll Never Get Out Of This World Alive track listing: 1. Waitin’ On The Sky 2. Little Emperor 3. The Gulf of Mexico 4. Molly – O 5. God is God 6. Meet Me In The Alleyway 7. Every Part of Me 8. Lonely Are The Free 9. Heaven or Hell (with Allison Moorer) 10. I Am A Wanderer 11. This City
  5. It doesn't work that way. Nor does any kind of reporting whether it be via newspapers, radio or any other medium. Some sort of bias is always going to seep in no matter what. There's simply no avoiding it.
  6. Can't say I agree. I've never read anywhere that TV was supposed to set any standards, much less politically correct ones.
  7. If it wasn't bitching then it was whining. I'm merely putting the shoe on the other foot by saying how some fans would react if they got their wish and he still refused to perform Zeppelin songs as was his policy at the beginning at his solo career.
  8. Referring to the photo above? If so, I'm pretty sure that's Robin Zander but I could see where someone might mistake him for Bret Michaels in that particular photo. **Edited to add: Weird, when I replied to this post I didn't even see the photo of Bret you had posted. I guess the page hadn't fully loaded.
  9. From BuffettNews.com: Jimmy Buffett and the Coral Reefer Band performed at the Sydney Opera House in Australia on Sunday January 23rd. The last time Buffett performed in Australia was in November 1988. All of the proceeds from the show went to the Queensland Flood appeal to help out with the recent floods.
  10. "Possum Kingdom" hit #9 on the charts while this particular song from Rubberneck never charted (at least that I've been able to find). The only other song from that record that did chart was "Away" which made it to #23. Maybe "One Hit Wonders" is a bit of a misnomer for this thread as most artists that hit the Top Ten or the #1 spot on the charts at least released another single, if not, they did release subsequent records, none of which were ever as successful as that one big hit. I guess the true meaning of a "One Hit Wonder"is an artist that had one hit song and was never heard from again. Though they are out there, I wouldn't think there's a great many of them as that's quite an anomaly. Maybe a better thread title would have been "Forgotten Songs" or something along those lines because it's not going to take long for all of the actual "one hit wonders" to be listed. So, in the spirit of songs that may have slipped from the collective conscious (if it ever entered it to start with), I give you Chris Rea's "Working On It":
  11. I don't own that album but I remember it. Derringer opened for Foghat back in the 70s at one of my first concerts. The Outlaws closed the show even though Foghat were billed as the headliners, I guess no one wants to follow "Green Grass & High Tides" because the same thing happened when I saw Van Halen, Boston and the Outlaws in '79. Even though Van Halen were the headlining band, the Outlaws closed the show. Back to Derringer, I'll never forget seeing them as wireless guitars were new then. During the show, Rick Derringer and his guitarist would toss their guitars to one another mid-solo just to show off their "wireless-ness" (for lack of a better word). It was quite the spectacle but for some reason, wireless guitars never seemed to catch on. If they did, I must say at most shows I attend these days, everyone has their guitars plugged in. Now Playing: I can't remember the last time I've heard this record in it's entirety but it's been far too long. This expanded remaster sounds very, very good and is best enjoyed cranked up to 11. I can recall when this first came out, I was still pretty heavy into Kiss but in the weeks following my purchase of Heaven Tonight, those Kiss records starting taking a back seat to Cheap Trick. This was "alternative" music before there was really a word for it. Yeah, it was heavy but it still wasn't what I'd call metal. "Hard rock" maybe but there was also this unmistakable "power pop" feel to it. They were years ahead of their time and no other band sounded quite like the Trick at the time. Thing is, the same thing is true of them today. That's what I call real staying power.
  12. What were it's "goals"? I never knew television had any. Funny to read about when it was first introduced, folks thought it was just a passing fad that would never replace radio. Well, it didn't but it definitely drew some numbers away.
  13. One can only imagine the level of bitching if Plant still refused to perform any Led Zeppelin songs in his set. I'm sure it would far exceed the number of folks complaining that he does perform around 4 of them per night on his current tour.
  14. Careful, that request could very easily lead to endless thread stalking from Leddy.
  15. Not a damn thing the matter with The Bangles, "Going Down To Liverpool" is one of my favorites from the Paisley Pop era. They even made it onto the Children Of Nuggets: Original Artyfacts From the First Psychedelic Era box set which is probably the closest we'll ever get to a Paisley Pop collection.
  16. So, what you're saying is, why doesn't he just re-join forces with Jones and Page for a new band? I wonder how many times he's had to answer that question already.
  17. Überlin, another taste from the next R.E.M. record. This will be the single in Europe while "Mine Smell Like Honey" will be the U.S. single.

The latest issue of Uncut includes a CD that features a lot of music we can look forward to this year. It also has an entire section devoted to new music, one of which is a new album from Emmylou Harris so I'm adding that to the list.
  19. Nothing the matter at all with some of those bands (especially The Cure & the Violent Femmes). Lots of folks here seem to be anti-80s but evidently their only exposure to music was the synth heavy bands MTV played to death (which commercial radio eventually picked up on). I just heard a great quote about Taylor Swift (not that you even mentioned her but it seems to fit) on NPR's Wait, Wait Don't Tell Me where Lucinda Williams (probably best known for "Passionate Kisses" which was a hit for Mary Chapin-Carpenter back in the 80s) is a guest: "If Taylor Swift were to sing a Lucinda song she's burst into flames". I guess there's nothing the matter with those artists you mentioned but they represent the homogenized edge of what's popular in country music today. I'm a Jimmy Buffett fan and recently saw the episode of Crossroads he did with Zac Brown on CMT. Not bad but he seems to be the country music version of the Dave Matthews Band and attracts the very same kind of frat boy crowd. Just not my thing...
  20. Great song but it got played into the ground. My favorite Dire Straits albums would be the first three but Love Over Gold also has it's moments, mainly "Telegraph Road". I even like some of Brothers In Arms but by then the band had expanded so much they no longer had that lean and mean sound that made those first three records so enjoyable.
