  1. Presently chilly in the Old North State.
  2. It's when it's been copied. If someone has a first generation, it's the original recording. When that's copied that version is referred to as second generation. If someone makes a copy of that version it's a third generation and so on.
  3. New video for "Taking It Easy Too Long" from Blitzen Trapper's American Goldwing record: http://youtu.be/fgZ0qFYWMdI
  4. Damn. You can't "unsee" that. Oh, the humanity.
  5. Except they left out the 80s as well as people holding up matches and lighters. They make up for it with the 00s though because that pretty much nails it.
  6. ...and I see nothing at all the matter with that. Same thing for "She's the Woman" also coming from an old demo. Lots of artists resurrect old songs.
  7. Funny how the person that uploaded "Down In Flames" on YouTube says it went on to become "You're No Good" from Van Halen II. "You're No Good" is a cover of a song by Clint Ballard, Jr. that was made famous by Linda Ronstadt (and was covered by several others as well). I realize cover songs don't always adhere to the original version sonically but I really don't hear Van Halen's version of "You're No Good" in "Down In Flames".

  12. Photos from last night's show at Cafe Wha? for anyone that may be interested.
  13. The "reggae guy" on Van Halen's last tour was Ky-Mani Marley, one of Bob Marley's many offspring. In regards to the unreleased material, Van Halen is one of only a handful of bands with a similar longevity that have never released a comprehensive box set. I'd love to see them put one out someday.
  14. It's not on YouTube but R.E.M. does a nice cover of this with Mike Mills singing lead that's available as one of the b-sides on the single for "Bad Day".
  15. Shinyribs (aka Kevin Russell of the Gourds) covering TLC's "Waterfalls".
  16. More information on the new album and tour from NJ.com.
  17. Cold (which is normal for this time of year in North Carolina) but getting warmer, at least for the next week or so.
  18. SPOILER ALERT Like I said, I think the movie is meant to be open ended so that the viewer can interpret it on their own terms. I thought the creation of the universe sequences were meant to give a different viewpoint to the creation of life in general and to the beginning of time. As for the beach scene, I took that to be the afterlife where the family is reunited with the son that is killed in the beginning of the movie. You also see Sean Penn as one of the other sons as an adult. I don't claim to grasp it all but those are some of my impressions. I'd like to watch it again too but it'll probably be a while. I wish I had seen it in a theatre so I could have really enjoyed the creation of the universe sequences on a grander scale.

  20. Even though I'm well aware of their lineage to bands like Foghat, I'm not exactly that well schooled in Savoy Brown. That said, their Hellbound Train record became a staple around my house when I found it in my sister's record collection back in the mid to late 70s. When I saw it on sale in the used section of Schoolkids Records in Raleigh recently I snatched it up. In addition to the title track, this is probably my favorite cut from it:
