  1. I agree, the line is very blurry at times but basically I think whoever comes up with the main melody and harmonic structure of the song is the composer. A drummer usually doesn't get writing credits for a unique beat, unless it's a drum solo or is directly inspired the main riff or melody. Bonzo certainly made unique contributions to songs but that's not enough to get credit. I seem to recall reading that the chromatic ascending main theme of Kashmir was his idea , so in that case he deserves writing credit. Bonzo has around 20 songs credited so I'd say he did ok. He's credited for Good Times Bad Times but Jones said he wrote the riff. I guess Bonzos unique drum beat got him composers credit however he doesn't get credit for Poor Tom which is a very integral part of the song. Who knows. Jones interpretation of Kashmir isn't that same as coming up with the melody or harmony. As a bass player and keyboard player, he's doing that all the time. The fact that he is an acknowledged composer on many Zep tunes seems to indicate that there wasn't an attempt to down play his contributions compositionally. The section you are talking about at 3:25 to 4:19 I always assumed was Jones improvising on the mellotron. There are two separate lines...one high, one low. They sound different in tone to me than the strings on the rest of the song. Same thing at the end of the song , starting at 6:41 to the end....sounds like he's improvising on the mellotron. Do we know for a fact if all of that is a written part played by strings?? The ascending line sounds like strings but not the fills. Those sound like an improvised accompaniment to the vocals.
  2. I'd go with either EAP or Winston, but each will give you different feeling as they're primary sources are different as noted by Strider and others. Personally, I love the old Cobra Standard release. The audio is bright and clear , with a great sense of atmosphere.
  3. Totally!!! Page's solo is one of his all time greatest IMO. Wish they'd do a new cut with alternate footage of the band playing. Honestly those "fantasy sequences " always bum me out as I'd much rather see them playing than watching that self-indulgent attempt at "art". Except for Bonzos which is down to earth and unpretentious.
  4. It could be worth several hundred dollars depending on the issue, where it was pressed, the condition. Check discogs.com for comparable copies. You'll have to compare matrix numbers , pressing plant codes etc. which are found in the dead wax runoff.
  5. Sorry if this is an ignorant question but...was the band actually taped for projection screens , or were the images just simply projected?
  6. Poor Naptown, no love. Not much happening there but its not all that bad, they have an excellent art museum, some decent restaurants. One of the greatest guitarists ever is from there....Wes Montgomery, so that's a point of pride for that town.
  7. Word! Empress Valley, if you're reading this. I for one will buy your release of Sept 28 1971 SBD. Just please don't make it a $400 combo with the AUD only. A 3 disc set, priced realistically, please.
  8. I've seen comments that say Empress Valley has threatened this may be their last SBD exclusive release. Exactly what does that mean? Are they going to hoard what they have forever , or destroy the tapes they've acquired ?? Or return them for their money back?? Or, maybe they don't own Zep anymore boards?? Maybe one thing they can do is offer a fairly reasonable 4 disc set of just the SBD. I think there are plenty of fans who would drop $100 -$150 for the artwork and the silvers. Even after downloading it just to hear it asap. Collector mentality. I've succumbed to the temptation from time to time.
  9. I'm in the same boat with you. Everytime I see new listings from high volume sellers it pisses me off. Total double standard. They must scapegoat a few sellers from time to time to appease the VROs . There are so many sellers that do high volume bootleg sales for years on eBay. It's not like they'd be hard to find and shut down. Discogs was at least another market for individuals to buy and sell from their private collection but now that's going away.
  10. I like it, keeps things interesting and bizarre. Thanks for this, a breath of air...sort of fresh.

    Bonzo

Love this! Dig the disapproving look from the lady. Wonder if this was from the ill fated Milan gig trip?
  12. I live in the US and it's the same. Many titles have been removed and blocked. I've been on discogs for several years and never saw anything like this. Warner must be on the warpath again like they do on eBay... athough titles by other artists are blocked as well. Makes me wonder if some of the bootleg sellers in Japan are flagging titles on discogs to eliminate competition.
  13. Thought I'd bump this thread , as this post from SAJ is very thought provoking. When I see pics of them performing on July 24 77, I can't help feel that gloom one sees in photos of a crowd just before a disaster hits.

  15. Jonesy gets into a little Ska groove on the Steinway there during the guitar solo!
  16. I don't have Winston's version of that show but I do have Afterburner which was allegedly a rip off his matrix and to me it sounds like a board only except for the audience patches and songs at the end. I'd like to ask Winston if he truly matrixed the sources. If he did then maybe he just used s very slight bit if audience tape as ambience. I think that's the Rain Song where the mellotron craps out so he finished it on the Rhodes. Great show, one of my all time favorites .
  17. I prefer the original LP mastering to the remaster but I can understand why people like the amplified, high eq sound of the remaster. The best way to listen to the whole show IMO is the Heywood remaster. It uses the best versions of Celebration Day and No Q, no missing beat in SIBLY and adds missing sections to Dazed and Whole Lotta Love. It was really confounding that Jimmy didn't remaster the album soundtrack or simply give us a complete concert from the multi tracks.
