redrum
I always get choked up watching Lonesome Dove. Awesome movie. The part where Gus wrote a letter for Lorena, but she couldn't read - she didn't want Clara to read it to her, she just wanted to have the letter, even not knowing what it actually said. I just got to the part where they hung Jake and the other murderers. 'Man Burner and Horse Theef'
redrum
We tried to watch 'The Hangover' last night and I have to say I will never understand all the hype we'd heard about this movie. It really has to be one of the worst I've ever watched. I don't understand what the hell is wrong with Hollywood putting out this kind of crap. I believe it was written by people stoned on heavy drugs....Directed by people stoned on heavy drugs....Acted by people stoned on heavy drugs....and most likely only enjoyed by people stoned on heavy drugs. I'm sure I'm not alone on this. Now take a movie like 'Sin Nombre' (2009)...This is a film that most have never heard of and to me it's just a great film. But all Hollywood is concerned with these days is trash like 'The Hangover' that can make the quickest buck possible.
Jahfin
I enjoyed The Hangover but I also didn't go into it thinking it was going to be something deep and meaningful. Not saying you did but you seemed to be expecting something more from it than what you got. Believe you me, those type movies do still get made but it's not what appeals to the masses. I'm not sure about everyone else but before I rent a movie I usually browse the customer reviews at Amazon beforehand. After reading a handful of those, I feel like I have a pretty accurate understanding of what to expect from a movie. That doesn't always mean I'll actually like it though. Spalove
I saw Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part I this afternoon In fact I saw all the previous Harry Potter films again over the weekend. I can't wait for part II

TypeO
Yeah, we were just going by all the hype we'd heard. The movie GAVE me a hangover. I'm kinda curious as to what you were expecting. And I don't mean that as a criticism of your view, just curious. I mean, it's a comedy. All I really remember about the hype was that it was outrageously funny, and I pretty much agreed after seeing it. For me it worked better than a lot of comedies because the humor is incidental, as opposed to comedies with set pieces. But again, that's just my opinion. I read a lot of comments on IMDB about it in a thread about how bad the movie was. My initial reaction was to be amazed that people didn't think it was a good movie or that it was funny. Sometimes it's easy to forget the simple fact that people just have different tastes. But then, my philosophy on humor could probably best be described as "no brow too low!" lulz
Mangani
Watched 'Pickup On Southstreet' (Richard Widmark and Jean Peters) and 'Where The Sidewalk Ends' (Dana Andrews and Gene Tierney) the other day. I love those kind of old movies.
Kiwi_Zep_Fan87
I watched this really awesome thriller on Sky Movies this evening! It was so gripping! Reminded me of the novels of one of my favourite authors in the whole wide world : "Mary Higgins Clark" Edited December 8, 2010 by Kiwi_Zep_Fan87

But then, my philosophy on humor could probably best be described as "no brow too low!" lulz I think a lot of it has to do with the 'Generation Gap' between me and the 'new' Hollywood. By that I mean that Hollywood seems to stoop to new lows to get a laugh and it just doesn't work for me. I showed a friend a scene from an older Joe Pesci movie called 'Family Enforcer' where Pesci and 2 of his friends were at a lounge and this guy comes on to play music by Stephen Foster ('Beautiful Dreamer' for wise guys??) and they started throwing peanuts at the guy and I got more laughs out of that one scene than I did out of the whole hangover movie. Off the wall comedies like 'Analyze This' work better for me. I'm currently working on a film we did locally called 'Libraryville' and a good example of 'off the wall' in this film is when God comes into the library and the librarian won't let him check out a book because he doesn't have an I.D. TypeO
I really enjoyed the Hangover. I've laughed so hard I was crying. I watch it often, and ALWAYS laugh. The subtleties are what really kill me - the sidelong glances and reactions when Allen says something outrageous.

TypeO
Recently watched Showgirls. Pleasantly surprised - pretty cool movie even without all the hawt flesh on display. And it's the only thing I've seen Kyle MacLachlan in besides Dune.
redrum
Just watched an independant film called 'The Talent Given Us' (2004) by Andrew Wagner. The film revolves around his real parents and siblings as they travel from New York to L.A. I love the mostly hand held camera work.
TypeO
I've got a ton of vacation time I'm taking ("use or lose"), so I've been off since the 17th until the 4th of January. So my 16 year-old son and I are catching a lot of "classic" and "must-see" movies together. Because he's never seen any of them in complete, we watched the first 2 Matrix movies last night, but since it was around 2:30 a.m., I insisted we watch Revolutions today - he was cool with that. Last week we watched Full Metal Jacket - he was impressed, definite thumbs-up. And I had the whole family watch It's a Wonderful Life with me a couple nights ago - it went over well. Because we've watched The Fifth Element and The Book of Eli, I'm thinking of rounding out a collection of Gary Oldman villain movies with True Romance and The Professional. Jahfin
I'm not a James Bond fanatic by any stretch of the imagination but this had all the touchstones of a great Bond flick. Looking forwarding to checking out Quantum of Solace next.

Looking forwarding to checking out Quantum of Solace next. Same here. Back in the day (as a kid) I got kinda excited about Bond movies, but not recently. However, Quantum of Solace was pretty good. They've kinda gotten away from the cheesy over-the-top Bond persona, to a fairly more realistic character.
Jahfin
However, Quantum of Solace was pretty good. I've heard less than favorable things about Quantum of Solace (at least in comparison to Casino Royale) so I'm in no real rush to see it at this point. Watched this last night and was very pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed it. I've been catching up on some of Judd Apatow's films lately and found this one much more mature than anything I've seen so far. That's not to say it's completely free of low brow humor, it's the direction it took towards the end of the movie that caught me totally off-guard. redrum
I was going to watch 'Public Enemies' with Johnny Depp the other night and when I put it on I realized I'd already watched it. That just proves to me how a lot of new movies are so forgettable. Now the version with Warren Oates (Dillinger) was absolute classic and I can remember all kinds of scenes from it, especially with Harry Dean Stanton when he gets the 180* circle shotgun blast in the street. I'm now watching 'Ghost Writer' and man, talk about a blatant put down of Tony Blair and Bush in a not so subtle way. These types of films show the real Hollywood leftism. And I'm also betting it was a flop at the box office even with Pierce Brosnan's star power. Stay in Europe, Polanski. (But I did like The Pianist)
Mangani
I watched A Matter Of Life and Death (known as Stairway to Heaven in the US) yesterday afternoon. David Niven and Kim Hunter. Not really into those kind of movies but I really enjoyed it.
