SuperDave
I did have the pickled herring with the onions when I was in Amsterdam. It was the full herring an not chopped. I think the latter is Rotterdam style if I'm correct. Got it from one of those street vendors in the city. I enjoyed it, but did have some after effects. bouillon
From my hometown of Chicago, I would say probably the Chicago-style hot dog I like the look of that. I would never have thought to put vegetables in a hot dog, apart from onions. Mmmm....might copy that for lunch. Except I don't know what the chopped green stuff is. And is that proper mustard, or the watered-down stuff you use over there?
Texas Melanie
I guess North Carolina barbecue would be a local specialty around here. It's a lot different than what you would consider "barbecue" because the sauce is vinegar and mustard-based, not tomato-based. It takes some getting used it, if what you're used to eating is Memphis/Kansas City/Texas style. From my hometown of Chicago, I would say probably the Chicago-style hot dog or the deep-dish pizza. Electrophile, you are making me hungry! My favorite pizza is the stuffed pizza(the very one in the photo) from Giordanos. Of course, one slice is plenty and it puts me in a food coma. Brad, you are making me hungry, too! I know I gave you and Strider a hard time yesterday. Have a great day and damn, Tommy's burgers look like food porn. Thanks for the clip. Road trip to L.A.!! 2bitnogoodjive
Any fans of Tijuana Flats? Famous for their "Smack My Ass & Call Me Sally" Hot Sauce. I usually get the chicken rice bowl. A large whole wheat shell loaded with chicken, rice, black beans, grilled onions & green peppers, topped with tomatoes & green onions. Served with a side of salsa. Yummy!! slave to zep
i don't mean to offend anyone, but i haven't seen ONE dish on these two pages that look remotely appetising. electrphiles pizza and superdaves salami look positively revolting imo. not to mention that they all look soooooo unhealthy. EW!
Electrophile
I don't see how pizza is revolting, but to each their own. It's a deep-dish pizza; sausage on the bottom, then cheese, then sauce. It's basically a backwards pizza with a thicker crust, and it's really no more unhealthy than a regular thin crust pizza. But hey, your loss. But hey, your loss. or gain, if i ate it! sausage, cheese and sauce .... to me it just doesn't sound or look like something i want to eat. you probably wouldn't like a lot of the foods that i like either yeah i did say imo. i know there are kazillions of people who love pizza. i like pizza sometimes, but i prefer one with a few toppings like capsicum, tomatoes, mushrooms .... any veg really. but i realize i am probably in the minority. EW! The salami (lardo) is a local specialty in Italy. Doesn't mean they eat 10 pounds of the stuff each day. I didn't run into too many obese people when I was in Italy. Doesn't seem to be a problem there as it is in the USA. Probably a lot due to lack of exercise, fast food and junk food here.

slave to zep
Hey Slave, I'm not offended in the least. I think the thread is fun because it's just about sharing "local feeding habits". Most people like me are fully aware that cultural or regional tastes are going to vary. That's why they are called "tastes". But you are correct in that most of this stuff is very unhealthy. BTW and FYI- There are huge regional debates in this country on pizza, BBQ and many styles of food. So you shouldn't feel bad about your comment on those awful Chicago style deep dish pizzas things, because I would argue that MOST Americans think they are revolting too... like a greasy lasagna casserole in a pie crust. And I do say 'most Americans" feel that way because in New York (where the best pizza comes from) people there 10 to 1 would probably thumb their noses in disgust to those deep dish pizzas too. So you are in good company, and it's not like what's her name hasn't heard some strong opinions about that before. Just another opportunity for somebody to try and make someone else feel bad about voicing an honest opinion. And what kind of person would get in a huff about something like that anyway? Your comments were fine and welcome. Cheers, hi brad yeah, it's just my opinion. as i said, i'm not the healthiest of eaters by a long shot! i love cheesecake, chocolate etc salami, not so much. slave to zep
I'm on this new fad diet called: Move more and eat less. Not sure if it's going to work because it doesn't come with any creams, lotions, springy exercise contraptions or an instructional video, so I am skeptical. I'll keep you posted on how it goes. good onya! hope it goes well
bouillon
australia is fast catching up with americas status as kings of obesity. Err....have you been to the UK recently? But I agree with you, stz, about the pizza and the salami. I love thin-base pizzas and normal salami, but I wouldn't touch those two. Anyway, I'm still waiting to hear what that chopped green stuff is on Electro's hot dog. Anyone got any ideas?

bouillon
That is a sweet pickle relish. I don't know why the pickle relish on a Chicago dog is that neon green color though. Thanks Brad, it was the colour that threw me. I've never seen green relish. Do you think it would taste the same as the brown stuff? I shall ignore your compatriot's subsequent barbed and superfluous response.

SuperDave
Chicago hot dogs are actually pretty good, as is most other foods there. But their awful pizzas are another story... yuk! Too many toppings for me. Just mustard (preferably brown or French) and red onions on my dogs. Never had Chicago style pizza. Well, New York pizzas can be killer if you go to the right place, like John's on Bleeker Street or Patsy Grimaldi's in Brooklyn. Great stuff! bouillon
As a matter of interest, what brand of frankfurters do you use over there? The best ones over here are Herta. IMO. And do many of you use that piss-weak traditional US yellow mustard?

And do many of you use that piss-weak traditional US yellow mustard? I hate that bright yellow mustard. It's such garbage. I think that's the French's brand. Prefer a spicy brown or a French style mustard. Like Maille which is a Dijon mustard. As far as frankfurter brands I used Nathan's, Kahn's and Sabretts. All are quite good. A little trivia for you. Maybe easy or not. What is the difference between a hot dog and a frankfurter?

The only topping that goes on a hot dog for me is mustard (as much of an institution as the Chicago-style dog is, there's too much stuff on it for me), and I like a good German mustard myself, though if the only kind available is Heinz or French's, I'm not a snob - I'll eat it. Ketchup absolutely 100% does not go on a hot dog.
Anjin-san
Hi all, Maybe a new thread is in order,.....? Local feeding habits, here in NE we do consume the 'staples' as else were in the this part of country.
