David DiDonato, a member of local band Modok and music instructor, broke the Guinness Book World Record after a 24 hour session that saw him surpassing the previous record by nearly forty minutes. Richmond.com reports that DiDonato used a local club called Red 7 to stage his record attempt, with both a live webstream and audience members to help verify his achievement. Playing for 24 hours and 55 minutes, with a Guinness approved five minute break every hour, DiDonato set a new record that beat the previously set 24 hours and 17 minutes. The world’s leading living axe legend however, was not that impressed. Speaking to Tone Deaf this morning for a forthcoming interview, former Guns N Roses/Velvet Revolver guitarist Slash was sceptical. “Oh… and not repeating one lick?” he queried, “what’s the criteria for guitar solo after it goes over thirty minutes? If you keep doing the same thing over and over again is that still considered a guitar solo.” Having been ranked #2 (behind Jimi Hendrix) in a recent Time magazine survey amongst the greatest guitarists of all time, Slash knows a thing or too about soloing himself. ”I’m actually surprised it’s that short. I thought it would be way longer. Somebody soloing for a week… I pictured in my head some guy sitting around for three days.” Is that the sound of Slash throwing down the gauntlet? “Well hey, you know they have those dance contests that last for days…” Jokes aside. The list is of "The Ten Greatest Electric Guitar Players" - although their list goes to "11" (Spinal Tap reference). And the list is not specified as being a one through eleven best, just the best eleven (in no particular order) by a Time music contributor. The list: Jimi Hendrix Slash B.B. First of all, I don't know that these consists entirely of people's favorites as each seems to have their own criteria. Secondly, there is no way to compile a list of "actual bests" since taste is subjective. There is no one list that anyone can compile that is going to make everybody happy. But I do think he's a criminally underrated guitarist. Or perhaps "under-recognized" is a better way to put it, because I don't know anyone who's actually heard him who underrated him!
