The Open was last at Hoylake in I think 2014 and previous to that in 2006 then before that along way back in about 1967. Birkdale though not far from Manchester is  closer to Liverpool, there's not much in it though, fifteen to twenty miles difference maybe.  I'm slightly envious that you have five channels for the Open, I'm stuck with the nightly two hours of BBC highlights..

That's why I use Directv, for their sports. They do that type of coverage with every major, tennis, and they have Sunday Ticket - which covers (almost) all NFL games.

I can't believe I didn't remember the Open being there 3 years ago. I do remember it now though - especially the amount of time since the '67 Open.

Spieth is going to be tough this weekend. He really reminds me of the Golden Bear in the way he conducts himself and his game. Really good kid and Cowboys fan! ;)

Fleetwood just made the cut, CP!

I could add Sky sports to my TV package for an extra £18 per month (about $28) but I'm paying £44 already. As the majority of our viewing is via free channels  I'm paying that £44 per month for things like Game of Thrones, Twin Peaks (the return) etc, basically HBO, Showtime programmes, a lot of money for very little.

Yeah I saw that the course is near Manchester. The weather has definitely taken a turn today and the golf has been fun! We watched a story how some locals work on Birkdale in exchange for some cheaper playing time.

How far is the drive to London (your fav city, I know) for you out there CP?

Not far enough man. About 180 miles.

First prize for the weather forecasters who got it wrong ! Looks wonderful out there for golf. Hardly a breath of wind and sunny. What did "they" say the other day? Wet and windy and cold - fucking useless wankers. Branden Grace- 62 wow what a card !! A cracking day in order

And so another year, another Masters. I really hope the organisers eject the usual dullards who get pissed and yell out "get in the hole" when Tiger tees off on a par 5 and basically ruin the whole spectacle for all.

Picks time and it's going to be a really good year for us pond side - well I hope.

Sergio? 2 years running? Don't think so. Here are mine:

Justin Rose: Runner up last year and playing really well at the moment. One of my favourite players and an all round good egg

Rory: Now then. Hot and cold. Can be  great and he certainly is on a roll but again his putting can be his downfall. He will be there or there abouts but I think the grand slam will elude him this year.

My wild card: Tommy Fleetwood. How can one not like the man? A local (ish) boy and a firm lover of Rock music, Tommy is playing great golf and if he holds his nerve and blocks out the wankers who will no doubt follow Woods around the course on the opening round, he will be in contention.

Tiger Woods: Even though he is playing well I just think the course will be too much for him - and keeping it up for 4 rounds.

Dustin Johnson/John Rahm. I am linking these 2 as there are big hitters and DJ is still No. 1 in the world. The course is not really for the big guns so mid table respectability.

Bubba Watson: Love or hate him he sure does love the Georgia track. Unpredictable at times his unorthodox style has it's charm. Could be a contender

Finally Justin Thomas. Nearly overthrew DJ the other week for the top spot and much is expected of him. The course might suit him but I think it maybe too early for him. One to watch for sure.

So let the action begin tomorrow and the CP's will be doing a feast for the weekend. Not grits though. Maybe some ribs or fried chicken but plenty of green and red.

Nice picks:

Both Phil and Tiger have been playing well and Tiger is the sentimental favorite with the comeback and what he has been through in his recovery and returning to competitive form.  Tiger only lost the Tampa tourney by a shot and that was by missing a put late on Sunday. I heard from a friend who's been down at The Masters with huge crowds following Tiger around with his resurgence.

Fleetwood is a good pick but he is so hot and cold from week to week.  I've picked him in my Golf Channel Fantasy this year but not consistent for me.  Their league is you chose six players and all given a dollar value based on world rankings.

Here is who I have:

Tiger

Phil

Justin Thomas

Daniel Berger

Patrick Reed

and a dark horse at bottom of pile with  Shubhankar Sharma from India who has played well across the pond and in Asia.  Had only the minimum $'s left.  He has same dollar value as Tiger at 5K.  Phil is 25K and Justin at around 30K or so.  Maybe 33K up there with DJ, Ricky, Jordan and Rory.

I'm sure it will be an amazing weekend as always and can't wait til it begins.

We put 300 in per each for year.  Payouts greater for four majors plus Sawgrass and Tour Championship. Winnings for 2-3 placings as well.  Money for overall placings at end.  Only won $175 last year, so a loss.  No firsts and all 2-3.  Much better this year and only three months in.  I have a 3rd, a 2nd and two 1st place showings.  That's $275 so far and makes up for a bad 2017.  Many more chances.  Quite happy so far!

Good luck to all in The Masters!

So far having a good year with the league as 25 of us in it on the GC site.  You go by their set up and creat a league and players enter and set up payouts as you wish.

Shit, didn't see that one coming. We watched it unfold live as it happened. I maybe a 12 handicapper but even I haven't taken 13 on a hole.

Yeah Mrs Walter said his ego got the best of him on that sequence of events.

Round today was very hit and miss. A few capitalized, but most fell down a number of shots to the lead.

Weather tomorrow and Sunday could be a major factor. Especially if there is some strong wind.

Went to yesterday afternoon's Tiger game against the Twins, which gave me some time to watch the U.S. Open late in the day.  How humbling !  A 620 yard par 5....a par 4 with a 5.03 average, and pitched greens from hell.  I thought Tiger was going to cry after his 2nd double-bogey.  Looking forward to the rest of the weekend to see who can humble this course or just plain survive.

Been golfing 5 times already this year.  Trying my best to develop some kind of short game.  Such a humbling sport.

The USGA won (or lost, depending on your point of view) the U.S. Open. Sun-baked greens from hell with impossible pin positions. I don't blame Mickelson for what he did. All that was missing from the course was a giant clown mouth to putt the ball through.

People want the best golfers in the world tested, sure, but not torture-tested. The way the USGA let the course get away from them the element of skill was replaced by sheer luck as the determining factor of the winner.

That's not golf...that's not sport...that's a coin-flip.

Agreed Strider and especially what they did with the greens on Saturday.  Then come Sunday as they know what they did it was much more manageable.  Not exactly fair when you have big names like Rory, Tiger and Jordan not even make the cut.  Need to make this fair.  You want those guys in the hunt Saturday and Sunday as good for ratings and makes a better tourney.

I was surprised Dustin Johnson let the lead slip away. I mean, I know the course was brutal but this is a guy who rarely gives up that lead once he's got it, he's very Tiger-like that way. It almost looked like Patrick Reed was gonna win his second major of the year for a minute there. If Dustin had won maybe we'd have gotten another controversial shot of lovely Paulina Gretzky sashaying up the stairs again, right? Haha. Anyway, congrats to Koepka

Good god man! The Open course at Carnoustie looks like a desert, mixed in with a few green patches...  I see what you guys mean about it being dry over there.

Is it British Open time already?

At least they kept Wimbledon looking green.

THE Open you mean? Wimbledon is always green due to the fact that it's only open for 2 dull, boring weeks a year. The rest of the time it's redundant.

Carnastie does look a brute doesn't it? Raining today bit not brutal like it can be. Yesterday looked great and yes we haven't seen much rain this summer in fact in my region we are not allowed to use a hosepipe to water the garden. Fuck that! It rains for 10 months of the year and when we get a couple of dry months they say it's a drought! Wankers. Try plugging the leaks and then see what happens?

Are you telling me you can't appreciate a good game of tennis, CP? Is your hatred of London such that even Wimbledon is anathema to you? When I first visited London, going to Wimbledon was uppermost on my agenda. I love tennis on grass...and you can take that in all its meanings.

Not a big fan of tennis. I used to be but it's now all grunting like a bad porn movie. Also it's the same people who win. Nadal, Federer, Djokotwat or whatever his name is. Don't get me started on the Ladies - gone are the fit ones and now it's all Williams this Williams that. My hatred of London goes much deeper than the corporate rip off of Wimbledon. I could write a book on the subject. One of my all time favourite ever sayings: " I never knew I was gluten intolerant until I moved to London"

Should be a cracker of a weekend. Very open and very tight. 9 shots separating the field. Weather set fair and my tip has to be Tommy Fleetwood. A rock and roll man and a northern lad to boot.

I will keep an eye on Jordan Speith - a great bloke and a really hope the misery that is Kisner fucks it up.

Tiger came close, eh? What was he doing hitting that shot at the crowd? And why did the crowd stand so close and not back away? If I see a golfer taking dead aim in my direction, there's no way I'm standing in the flight path.
