Just over a year and 47 days after the warranty expired my fucking HP Pavillion laptop fucking bites the dust. The hard drive went. I am disgusted. I am using the Toshiba my ex wife's daughter who moved out, and said was dead, she could not have been more wrong. I was able to add it to my Norton 360 even though I had used my max of 3 computers, somehow it let me load it. Ill have to pony up again in August but Norton is well worth it. I do have a HP deskjet all in one and will have to install the software on this Toshiba. I am hoping it will be compatible, I would think so. I have lost faith in HP. Hewlet Packard There laptops should last longer. I powered up my Dell dinosaur desktop and it worked. Its fine if you dont mind watching paint dry My banking and off shore accounts are up and running.

HP is pure shit, I have been a Mac user since 2009 and could not be happier, well worth the extra cash. My Mac never has crashed even once, the only problem they seem to have (MacBook) is the battery. I really can't complain though as it did last for three years before it died, and then I bought an after-market for $35. Good as new.

HP sucks!!!

Rick,

Did you consider taking your HP laptop to a computer repair shop to get a new hard drive installed? It might work out cheaper than buying new. I bought an HP professional laptop on Ebay, and I haven't had a problem with it (So Far).

I see that you are using Norton security - computer geeks tend to think that Norton slows your computer down. Does your internet service provider not give you security software free? Here in the UK, your ISP usually gives free security. I got McAfee free of charge, and I couldn't say a bad thing about it.

Like you, I have an HP all-in-one printer, and I've been delighted with it (until I have to buy replacement ink cartridges!!), but I would dread your task of having to set it up with another laptop. When I bought mine new, it took three hours to set up.

HP doesn't make hard drives. So even if you buy a replacement laptop from a different manufacturer it's quite possible you will be purchasing the same brand hard drive again. Western Digital has it much easier than HP :-)

Thanks for the advice. But I tend to agree with the poster below it will be a waste of time. and money. I can indeed set up the printer with another laptop. I am now using my step daughters Toshiba that she said was dead. Not a thing wrong with it. I installed Norton, transferred my account, and even though I already used 3 PC's on it, the limit, it still allowed me to install it, even without the product key. Of course I still have the key. But when I am in the mood Ill connect this wirelessly to the HP all in one. I am done with HP and their fucking asian techs living somewhere in Delhi, India or God knows where. And Netgear and I Yogi can suck my left one too. My wife is agaist me buying an apple. "you just bought two computer and a guitar". Bla Bla Bla. Even though she is right. And lets not forget the Smith and Wesson 9 mm. I do not know how long it will take for me to coax her into an apple. Until then Ill be on this fucking Toshiba.

Cheap, disposable shit! Just like every other thing you get from China.

Actually most computer hardware for the most part is of high quality and just about everything electronic-wise comes from China. I've built lots of boxes that have run solid for years only to be replaced by the tech wave. Apple products are mostly manufactured in China as well as every other brand. They just like to charge a lot more for their shit :-)

Rick,

You don't have to buy an Apple to get a quality product. As I said above, I have a HP625, but if I were going to buy a new laptop, I would be looking at Samsung. I have got a Samsung tv and a Samsung mobile. They have both been excellent quality - not a single problem with either. A Samsung laptop would be cheaper, and they have a very comprehensive range. It you told the salesperson what your type of use is, it may be that you don't need the top end of the market processor like iCore7. An iCore3 or iCore5 may be sufficient for you.

The other thing is that you may not be aware of the free programmes which you can get. If you type the word "freeware" into Google, you'll see that you can get free internet security. There is a site called CCleaner.com where you sign up for free, and it allows you to run a program which will clear up space on your hard drive. You can get a free office suite of programs called OpenOffice which would save you money on subscribing to Microsoft Office.

I agree with you about how annoying it is when you phone up and you are being dealt with by people who can hardly speak English. A lot of them sound like they are reading off a script. I am finding that friends are now saying that one of their deciding factors in choosing to purchase from companies is if their customer service is in the customer's own country. Putting your customer support overseas is a cost cutting exercise which has not been entirely successful.

kenog~ ccleaner and openoffice are good freebies. Also paint.net is a very powerful and free image editor. For good free a/v protection windows users can't really go wrong with microsoft security essentials, especially when used in conjunction with malwarebyte's antimalware free version.
But some "freeware" will crap out your computer so it's a good idea to research the program first before installing to make sure it's "geek-certified". Like stay away from those "pc tune-up" programs at all cost :-)
If you use win7 this is a good read:

Hi Redirtuo,

Thanks for that. I'm trying my best to help Rick get sorted out without it costing him the earth. I use ccleaner every day after I've finished using my laptop. The other free program I would advise for Rick (or anyone for that matter) is defraggler by Piriform. I use this once a week. It also give the 'health status' of your hard disc drive.

I don't know about the US, but over here in the UK your internet service provider gives free security. It sounds to me from Rick's posts that he is paying for Norton. I've also tried pointing out that Norton slows down computers. Perhaps better with McAfee or free security.

In fact, there is a consumer website here in the UK which gives a guide to free software, and the stuff available is obviously accessible to US consumers:-

I got a virus while using AVAST (free version) so I was looking around for a different anti-virus and I managed to get the paid version of AVG for a year by signing up for love film for a month (about a fiver) so that's obviously much cheaper. What I like about AVG thus far is that you can have a AVG toolbar and change your google search to an AVG search; which rates all the pages and sites before you click on them.

The best anti-spyware I've used is superantispyware

I do use ccleaner but slimcleaner is also worth checking out as it has some additional features that are rather handy.

Again thanks. But i bought a Samsung laptop, and the hard drive was defective when I brought it home!!! In the boot up system. Luckily Wal Mart let me take it back. Then I buy the Pavillion by HP. And then the hard drive goes in a year.

As for those free anti virus protections, they SUCK. AVG sucks. Buy Norton 360. Its worth the $59 a year. Or McAfee if thats your thing. I like Norton. I am going to use this Toshiba as its working quite well. When it shits the bed, its Apple. The Dell I have upstairs, the desktop works but needs to be cleaned up. Slow. For desperate situations only like yesterday.

Rick, have you ever considered a Sony Vaio? I don't know what their reputation is in the industry, but I've had mine for almost 3 years and it has been a workhorse. I leave the thing on almost 24/7 and it run it hard with multiple windows and it keeps on ticking. It is an I7 Quad Core which probably helps.

What it isn't good at is stopping Virus's. I've had a few slip in....some nasty Malware, Trojans too. I've used Norton, McAfee, Avast!, and Malwarebytes along with the basic Windows stuff but some still seem to come through every so often. The sites I visit seem legit, so it torques me off when this occurs.

For that reason, I agree that an Apple looks better and better..... Oh, the other thing is I do get the occasional blue crash screen too but I attribute that to Windows 7 more than the Sony Vaio which has been a tank. Then again, I'm not a computer tech so what do I know? Just my 2 cents, hope your Toshiba will do the trick for awhile for you. :) Missy

I was not doing porn. My hard drive died a year after I bought the Pavillion, a step up from the Presario. Both pure shit. Does anyone know about this new Galaxy I Pad that is coming out? Made by Samsung. I did buy a Samsung laptop and had to return it the same day as the boot up system was flawed. A hardware problem just like I had with HP. I am not so sure your claim of Macs being a rip off are true if they indeed hold up?

I have never heard of a galaxy ipad. Only apple makes an "ipad" and "iphone" which runs iOS and is similar to OS X on their computers. Samsung and all other manufacturers use android and/or windows for their tablets, computers and phones. That is the main difference between apple and the rest. The operating system.

Rick,

I am wondering if you are referring to the new Samsung tablet which has recently been announced. You have to remember that a tablet is different in many ways from a laptop, and from your previous posts, I assume that it is a new laptop which you have in mind. IPAD is just the registered name of Apple's tablet.

Here is a brief description of the awaited Samsung tablet:-

"...Samsung has unveiled a tablet that can switch between the Windows 8 and Android operating systems.

The Ativ Q has a 13.3in (33.8cm) screen that sits over a keyboard that can be folded out for typing or set to act as a stand. In addition it has a stylus.

It comes just over a fortnight after Asus unveiled its own laptop-tablet hybrid which also runs both Microsoft and Google's systems.

One analyst said he expected this to be a trend that other firms would follow.

. It's the logical next step." The launch was announced at a press conference in London."

I think what some of us on here are trying to say to you is that to get a reliable laptop, you don't have to spend the amount that an Apple would cost. It seems to me that you were unlucky with the Samsung that you bought, but it could just be part of a faulty batch. Think how many times you will have bought something and when you opened the box, it was faulty. It happens.

There are other makes you could consider like ACER or ASUS.
