News Paper Article: Osmonds Got A Whole Lotta Love

Article found in Northern Irelands' "Sunday Life" newspaper:

Pop legend Jimmy reveals that rock bad boys Led Zep were fans...

"Notorious heavy rock bad boys Led Zeppelin have hidden a deep dark secret - they were fans of goody two shoes pop family The Osmonds!

Jimmy Osmond lifted the lid on how the legendary rock hell raisers love Crazy Horses and hanging out with the clean cut Mormon clan. And the 50 year old youngest member of the Osmonds also told Sunday Life about:

* his astonishing 47 years in the music business, making his debut with the legendary Frank Sinatra

* the return of The Osmonds who sold more than 100 million records to their most faithful fan market - the UK and Ireland; and

* why he doesn't mind being your Long Haired Lover from Liverpool, 41 years after the song was a smash hit.

Jimmy, in Belfast this Autumn with his brothers Merrill and Jay for their American Jukebox Show, revealed how his brothers socialised with the original "monsters of rock"

But the non-smoking, non-drinking dad of four said that the debauched English rockers - infamous for hotel orgies, mind-boggling bedroom antics, trashing hotels and throwing TVs off buildings - were "like family guys to us".

Said Jimmy: "We met Led Zeppelin because we used their sound system. We followed their tour. They were so nice!"

"They brought us back to their hotel and it was cool. They were just like family guys to us. "It was mostly my brothers who talked to them. I was very young at the time. But I was still there and it was quite amazing".

"It is also really cool for us to know that people from top groups like Led Zeppelin and other have raised their hands and said "isn't that a great riff" or "they really did have amazing musical talent" about us.

I read somewhere that the Osmond Brothers wanted to branch out into a more rock-oriented musical direction during the late 70's but their management put all of their energy into promoting the Donny & Marie Show instead. A question for posters who are more knowledgeable about their music than I: Did they have the musical chops for rock?

Hearing "Crazy Horses" on the radio recently made me think how can such a great backing track be wrapped in such a shite lyric. That driving guitar riff, the short snappy solo....I'd be quite happy to blast a vocal free version of the track while driving in my car. In fact take away the vocal it "almost" sounds like something Hawkwind might play.

YES, Yes they did and after 62 years in the business with over 100 MILLION Records sold & 90 Gold & Platinum Awards, Lead singer, Merrill Osmond & drummer, Jay Osmond continue to record and perform to sold out concerts.  If you would like to hear some tunes, see some photos, etc.. just let me know.  Jay Osmond enjoys telling of the time in 1975 when The Osmonds joined Led Zeppelin on stage for Stairway to Heaven. Jay Osmond who was good friends with John Bonham, perform percussions beside John.  The following night, John took his son to see THE OSMONDS in concert.  Some cool old rock history that few know about.
