I think it's just much more staged than the casual pose suggests. Look at the way the light is angled on his face... the deep shadows around his jacket sleeves, the flash of strong light on the boat's windscreen. It's quite a statement photo, apparently taken at night. For most boating people, such a photo would be in daylight. When he lived on the river ( and evidently in those days worked very hard too ) did he mostly experience that by night? I think very likely so ...
