My fave book store back in the 70's in the funky/nasty Tenderloin district. McDonald's Books. Greatest book store I've ever been in.ย

Independently owned and operated bookstore were great. The chains, Amazon and social acceptance of stupid people have wiped most of them out.

That store was so cool. You had to take a flashlight in to see some of the shelves as it was kind of dingy in the back.ย

I'm asking the same question Yoko. Why? Why indeed would anyone caterwaul along like that. Prop's to the poor bastard sitting next to her on her left, looks like he thinks the whole thing is hilarious.ย

So many why's

Why would anyone call her nonsense artistic?

Why would John indulge her nonsense?

Why did John choose her over the band?

Why couldn't John see what was obvious to everyone else?

Why?

That's where they kept the naughty stuff, books on the occult, and the very first Jumanji game.ย ๐Ÿ˜›

Well, she was / is not the only "artist" to do noise as music, but as she was married to JL the spotlight was on her. Believe me, there are plenty of shitty "artists" out there most of us have thankfully never heard.

I think John indulged her because he was attracted to that aspect at that point in his life. He did have a history of what I considered really shitty noise compositions such as Revolution #9 so it really comes as no surprise to me.

Per the recent re-issued doc and other sources, John did not choose her over the band. John Lennon was an asshole, plain and simple. John chose John, it was 100% his ego at work.

Hard to see the obvious when your (John's) ego is taking up all the space and air in the room.

They had an awesome WW2 collection, and CHEAP!!!

Very cool!!

Another random thought - anyone else love the smell of used bookstores? They were my favorite places as a kid, primarily because they usually had a comics section but I was also a voracious reader starting at a very young age. Mostly sci fi and fantasy, then later "real" literature starting around age 14.

There used to be a Powell's books in an old building in Oakland. It was also a wonderland. Now they're in Oregon.ย

Yoko came along at the right time for John. He didn't really want to be a Beatle anymore and she offered a new and different direction. She took so much criticism that he took relatively little, which appealed to his ego as he spent the 1970s going further and further up his own ass. On a subconscious level, she became a Mother figure to him, such that in the end he was completely dependent upon her -- complete emasculation. Some claim the Steely Dan song Only a Fool Would Say That is directed at John. The lyrics do seem to fit the situation.
