My fave song (among many others!)......Waterloo Sunset

Dirty old river, must you keep rolling

Flowing into the night

People so busy, makes me feel dizzy

Taxi light shines so bright

But I dont need no friends

As long as I gaze on waterloo sunset

I am in paradise

Every day I look at the world from my window

But chilly, chilly is the evening time

Waterloo sunsets fine

Terry meets julie, waterloo station

Every friday night

But I am so lazy, dont want to wander

I stay at home at night

But I dont feel afraid

As long as I gaze on waterloo sunset

I am in paradise

Every day I look at the world from my window

But chilly, chilly is the evening time

Waterloo sunsets fine

Millions of people swarming like flies round waterloo underground

But terry and julie cross over the river

Where they feel safe and sound

And the dont need no friends

As long as they gaze on waterloo sunset

They are in paradise

The Kinks get a little love from Patterson Hood and Mike Cooley of the Drive-By Truckers in this recent interview with Pop Matters:

I wanted to talk a little bit about songwriting influences. As far as influences go for the band, the Stones, Skynyrd, and the Faces get thrown around a lot, but I wanted to ask you about Ray Davies and the Kinks. Davies is generally considered the most English of the rock songwriters, and his songs are written from an obvious perspective and have a strong voice. Is he a big influence for you and if so, would you say that his influence is revealed in the specificity of your songwriting—as distinctly Southern as you are is similar to the Kinks being so stereotypically English?

MC: If I ever get the chance to meet Ray Davies, I’m gonna pull him off to the side and just say, ‘Level with me, dude. Nobody’s that English.’ (Laughs) I’ll level with him if he levels with me. But honestly, there’s some similarity there. I love the Kinks.

PH: I do too.

MC: I absolutely love them. They’re probably my favorite of the British bands. I like them better than the Beatles, I swear to God I do. Not much more, but I do.

PH: Me too.

Really?

MC: They were the best and ain’t that how it always goes? Of that whole bunch, they were probably the least successful and the least regarded, but my God, they created rock ‘n’ roll in a way like nobody else ever has. There is no more rock ‘n’ roll song than “You Really Got Me”.

PH: Hank Williams might have invented punk, but the Kinks invented punk rock.

About 10 years ago, Ray did a bunch of solo shows down the village in NYC. I helped him sing The Bananna Boat song a.k.a Day-O. Couple years after that, I saw Dave solo at The Bottom Line in NYC. Dave needed no help performing.

I refer to the song "Days" as the greatest song in the history of the world....(Waterloo Sunset is not too shabby either)...

Thank you for the days,

Those endless days, those sacred days you gave me.

I'm thinking of the days,

I won't forget a single day, believe me.

I bless the light,

I bless the light that lights on you believe me.

And though you're gone,

You're with me every single day, believe me.

Days I'll remember all my life,

Days when you can't see wrong from right.

You took my life,

But then I knew that very soon you'd leave me,

But it's all right,

Now I'm not frightened of this world, believe me.

I wish today could be tomorrow,

The night is dark,

It just brings sorrow anyway.

Thank you for the days,

Those endless days, those sacred days you gave me.

I'm thinking of the days,

I won't forget a single day, believe me.

Days I'll remember all my life,

Days when you can't see wrong from right.

You took my life,

But then I knew that very soon you'd leave me,

But it's all right,

Now I'm not frightened of this world, believe me.

Days.

Thank you for the days,

Those endless days, those sacred days you gave me.

I'm thinking of the days,

I won't forget a single day, believe me.

I bless the light,

I bless the light that shines on you believe me.

And though you're gone,

You're with me every single day, believe me.

Days.

I like The Kinks, but don't own a single one of the albums.

I saw Ray Davies at Glastonbury in '97, he was good.

I also heard a session he did for Radio 2 a few weeks back performing songs from his new album. He seems like a nice guy.

AND.....The Kinks are the guys who "invented" heavy metal (????!) with "You really got me"...(legend has it!)!!!

They invented the term 'best song with the worst solo ever'.

...or I invented it, and they inspired it. yea.

I don't either and I have it on my list to pick some albums up - would love to hear any recommendations of what to get.

I need to expand my collection as well. I think all I have is a comp from Rhino on CD and Give The People What They Want on vinyl. I read recently where they have a box set out but the review (from Uncut) didn't speak too favorably of it.

How did you like "State of Confusion" ? I thought it was OK for the eighties, but I have always like thier old stuff.

To be honest, I still have a lot to discover when it comes to their later catalog. I have only heard Come Dancing from that album. I am pretty curious about those later records though, and will check 'em out eventually.
