So who are the favorites for the Derby this year? I really haven't had time to pay attention to this year's 3 year olds. I know the Wood was run recently, and I guess the Santa Anita Derby has also by this time.

A lightly raced and unbeaten horse called American Pharaoh is the favorite from post 18, the auxiliary gate. I like the race before the Derby more, the Woodword Reserve Turf race. They are taking a two day Double with the Kentucky Oaks today with the Derby tomorrow and a pick, where you can play .50 cent combo, with the Oaks, Woodword and Derby. My numbers in the pick 3 are 5 with 1,8,11 with 2,18,19. An investment of $4.50. Yes I am taking an aggressive single in today's Oaks, a filly race. I go with number 5 Condo Commando with Joel Rosario riding. Procede with caution. More to follow

Race 9 is coming up. I bet Forest Elf to place and show. 50-1 Morning line. But only 20-1 now.

Have 10 to win

Got the EX,. 10-12. The elf is still running.

As far as the Derby goes I would use the 18,2,19,3 and 8. I bet an exacta wheel for a dollar on 2,3,8,18 over 19. The race before the Derby is a Turf race known as the Woodword Reserve. A race that has been good to me over the years. I will try and ex 9,10 over 5,11.

Race ten use the 9 and the 10 (Chocolate Ride)

Santa Anita winners XM radio capper (race 5 the 8, Race 10the 9. Race 11 the 2 at 15-1. Motown Men and Moussed Up for a big late DD

Derby. Tough as always. Using 2,3,8,18.19 on top in ex and tri and super wheels. Like Upstart to be in the money somewhere. American Pharoah could be the real deal but must use others like Dortmund, Upstart, Materiality and maybe even Itsaknockout. (the 13)

I'm going to go with Frosted (15)to win, followed by Mubtaajh(6), Dortmund (8) and Carpe Diem (2)

Good luck to you. I am now playing with house money as I hit the trifecta at Santa Anita in race 6. 10-6-11. The Old JFK. Last minute strategy? I am putting the 13 underneath in a few bets. Shocking that Upstart is so long. so I have exactas 2,3,8,18,19 w 2,4,,8,10, 13,19. Mostly dollar combos and a couple of supers

Here are some very interesting and useful stats to consider before making your choice in the Preakness. First of all, the Preakness has always been a better betting race than the Derby, simply because its far easier to predict if you know what you are doing and less horses. less chance of your horse being blocked and hammered out of the gate. The exotics, ie, the exactas, trifectas, and such do not usually pay as well as the Derby for that reason. Less horses, and far more of an idea what these 3 year olds can do.

Now consider this: Since 1989 8 West Coast horses, ie, Cal horses, have won the Derby. Of those 8, 6 have gone on to win the Preakness. That is a number that cannot be ignored. And add this, since 1910 only 4 horses have come from dead last, off the pace and won. The last was in 1974. So tactical speed is a must. American Pharoah has a huge huge shot here. I do fear Dortmund if he goes and we will know the field by 8 tonight. (EST). If you bet him flat you will likely double your money or perhaps for every $2 bet you may earn $3.80 or so, which would be a profit of $1.80 for every two bucks you put up. Possibly more with the inclusion of Dortmund or the horse that finished second, Firing Line I believe.

The undercard will be very attractive, multiple grade 1 and 2 stakes races. I am a Turf lover myself. And I prefer Turf races 1 mile and an eighth and up. Longer races give the better horse time to overcome a bad start or being blocked on the turn and other obstacles. I will post my picks later on when I have studied and know the field.

OK folks. The Preakness is tomorrow and here is some info. Last 8 Derby winners from California, 6 have gone on to win the second jewel of racing's Triple Crown which has not seen a triple crown winner since 1979!! Yes. 36 years ago. So long ago that Visa thew in the towel almost a decade ago on their 5 million dollar prize to take all 3 legs This year once again we are tempted with American Pharaoh. Now Bob Baffert, a big shot trainer from Santa Anita and the Cal racing circuit is trainer of both Pharaoh and Dortmund. They are in posts 1 and 2. American Pharaoh, the 1 horse is 4/5 on the morning line. Dortmund, the number 2 is 7/2. Co favorites. Now you know Baffert has and will give orders to the jockeys and its no secret he would prefer to see American Pharaoh win. Those in the sport would like to see the drought end. But there are those that are going to make it tough, like the owner of Frosted who has been held out of the Preakness to win the Belmont and try and stop American Pharaoh from winning it. Many, myself included, believe you should have to run in the previous two to qualify to run in the Belmont to make the task at hand equal. That is not the case. We saw Big Brown fail miserably when we really believed he was the horse that would end this. Afleet Alex would have won if no for pilot error in the Derby on Giacomo day, a day I will never forget as my $1500 win on the p3 leading into the Derby was little consolation for the half million I would have won if I had put up the $540 to buy the Derby on top of my $27 investment to take down a nice pick 3 before that race.

On to tomorrow. I do believe American Pharaoh will win but it will take a good ride and a good start. Dortmund and Firing Line will have speed and will challenge early. They should both be in front of American Pharaoh at the quarter pole unless they send him early. And send him Baffert may. Especially if Dortmund's camp is ok with place money. I bet a trifecta for a dollar going 1 (American Pharaoh) with ALL with 4 (Danzig Moon) a closer that I like to come third. The question is, will Dortmund be on his A game. If he is, he is one dangerous animal to ruin the party and so too is Firing Line. So if you want to try and beat the Pharaoh, they are the likely two to do it.. Lets just hope that all of the horses come out of the race healthy. This is a race that has seen tragedy in past years. If you want a cold tri, try 124. Good luck

Betting on American Pharaoh in the Preakness with only 3 or 4 other contenders? You're certainly not going to get good odds so you're not going to make any money on the bet.

Once again there won't be a Triple Crown winner because the trainers are holding their horses out of the Preakness to ambush American Pharaoh in the Belmont.

Unless he is just that good? 3 year olds can get better with each race. And as for the price, The presence of Dortmund and Firing Line, two speed horses, will ensure a better price than you may assume. Much money will go down on those two horses.

Congrats again to American Pharoah- will this finally be the year.....

I am rooting for him but not getting my hopes too high. He has a big shot. But Frosted and another horse were mentioned by the great hall of fame rider Jerry Bailey as certain and real threats. And they are rested and have that edge. Still, perhaps this is the year? We have said this 11 times since 1978 only to be disappointed. To me Afleet Alex who lost the Derby on pilot error was one of the best. American Pharaoh should be coming home with one or two horses in a fight

Here we go again. I believe this is number 12 since the last triple crown winner to go for the Belmont and the Crown with two under his belt. Will he fail like Big Brown, one that was believed to be the real deal like the Pharaoh? Some believe Frosted being held out and rested will lead to his failure. I am not sold. I believe it can happen this time. I hope it does for the sport.

I hope so too, it would be nice to see a horse finally do it. We were spoiled in the 70s with Secretariat, Seattle Slew & Affirmed all within 5 years of each other.

For anybody planning on going- NYRA is going to cap the attendance at 90,000 (last year California Chrome drew 120,000 and people waited hours to get out of Belmont Park) so get there early especially if it's a nice day.

Race 5 at Belmont today. The 3 horse is Battle of Evermore. Yes like the Zeppelin song. Big shot. Take the plunge with me.

As for the big race, tick tock. I believe this horse has a real shot

Race 9 at Belmont today like the 5 Piccolo Flats

THE 37 YEAR DROUGHT SHALL END TODAY ON BELMONT DAY FOLKS!!!!!! AMERICAN PHARAOH IS THE REAL DEAL.

The pick 4 starts in race 8 and the Belmont is race 11.

Here are your numbers for the 50 cent pick 4 that can land you a few bucks.

2,4,6,9 with 4,6 with 3,7,11 with 5. 5 being American Pharaoh. The total cost for the 50 cent combo ticket is $12.

I believe that in the second leg Tonalist and a horse named Wicked Strong you may remember from last years Derby give you a solid one two punch. The third leg, if you do not want to invest $12 and will settle for a $4 wager, single the 3 horse Finnigan's Wake who has a huge shot and I believe should win. The 11 and 7 do scare me at good odds. Cheers and good luck. May the horse be with you!
