LedZeppfan77
Damn right it is...it's our 146th birthday today! Got Exit Stage Left by Rush cranked up on the hi-fi, local brew and locally grown spliff in hand, just BBQ'd some steaks a while ago...happy Canada Day! So around the time of our Civil war you gained your independence? From the French or English? I am a bit rusty on my Canadian history. As a friend of mine from the board will find out when he opens his email. That would have been the same decade as Lincoln's assasination and the end of our Civil war. You honor Queen Victoria, does the province of Quebec share in this? I would guess they show more allegiance to the French? Were there any wars that had to be fought back then to gain control? Nutrocker
http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/british-columbia/story/2013/07/02/bc-rcmp-terrorism.html Jesus, and my wife and I were in Victoria last year for Canada Day, visiting friends...had this had actually happened last year, we woulda been right there, because we were all at the Legislature watching the fireworks. Mind ya, these kinds of stories don't surprise me, anybody who thinks Canada isn't immune to terrorism is pretty dumb IMO...I was only two years old when Pierre "Just Watch Me!" Trudeau put the fucking country under Martial Law in order to deal with a Quebec Separatist terror organization (the FLQ). Any other Canuckleheads here remember that one? Nutrocker
So around the time of our Civil war you gained your independence? From the French or English? Correct, we gained our independence from England in 1867, though technically Canada didn't get its own constitution until 1982 (Charter Of Rights And Freedoms), when the aforementioned Pierre Trudeau basically told Queen Elizabeth to go fuck herself You honor Queen Victoria, does the province of Quebec share in this? I would guess they show more allegiance to the French? Were there any wars that had to be fought back then to gain control? Naturally Quebec shows more allegiance to the French (the irony being people in France tend to look down upon Quebeckers as something like third class citizens, not quite as lowdown as Muslims in France's eyes but pretty close )...I have no idea if they celebrate Victoria Day (18 May) in Quebec...their version is Bastille Day (24 June), and of course there was a bit of a hulabaloo when it transpired that Best Buy's Canada Day sale adverts didn't mention "Canada Day" in Quebec, they called it "Moving Day" instead, since a lotta Quebeckers seem to move on the Canada Day long weekend. In Canadian history wars fought between the Enlgish and French took place long before 1867...although that's only actual combat. Quebec and the rest of Canada have been at each others' throats for decades; Quebec wants to separate so they can have their own 'distinct identity'...but the only way Ottawa will allow it is if they take their share of the national defecit with them, so we're still stuck with Quebec. That's the short version On a political level, the opposition party in our Parliament, the NDP (New Democratic Party- bleeding heart Socialists, not to put too fine a point on it) is chock full of people who support the Quebec Separatist movement, and the leader of the NDP, Tom Mulcair, not only has dual citizenship with France but in press conferences tends to speak French more than he does English...which is the main reason why the NDP will never form a government in Canada, they'd sell out the rest of the country to Quebec in a heartbeat. It is worth mentioning that the leader of the other opposition party, the Liberals (a more centrist party than the NDP) is none other than Justin Trudeau, Pierre's son. The Trudeaus are basically Canada's version of the Kennedys. The actual government in power - the Conservative party, is as white bread Anglo as you can get... Nutrocker
Canada is friends with the US. That puts you on Al Queda's hit list Well, I've been saying for years now that had Canada sided with Bush and Blair and sent troops into Iraq in 2003 we probably would have suffered some kind of terror attack (just like London, Spain, Austrailia with the Bali bombing...you know, coutnries that did sent troops to Iraq) but our PM at the time, Jean Chretien had the good sense to basically tell George W, "Fuck you, George, go fight yer own battles!" But as it stands right now Canada is one of the only countries left in the Western world that has remained untouched by 'Al Qaeda' terrorists. I'm sure that'll change at some point, though... There are so many Canadians that own property there its mind boggling. And the French stay together there as well. When my Grandmother was alive her neighbor was from Ontario. She had always told her to let her know when she would sell. When she passed away my mother obliged to my knowledge and unloaded it fast to their Canadian friends. The whole damn unit is Canadian. But I try to go there>? Fuck you they tell me.
Sagittarius Rising
The French and British fought several proxy wars in the America's over several decades. The most well know is the Seven Years War, or as we in the states refer to it, the French Indian Wars. These were fought from 1754 to 1763, I know, it's nine years but who's counting right? Anyway, the French in Quebec, which was about three times it's present size than and encompassed what is now Wisconsin, Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Northern Ohio, and part of Minnesota, were doing pretty damn good against the English (Mohawk & Creek allies of the French were some of the meanest most viscous fighters around, made Apaches look like pussies, and they ate their vanquished enemies too) until, like the Confederates during the Civil War, ran out of supplies and men. The British than pretty much kicked their asses and captured Montreal in 1760. As part of the peace treaty France gave up all holdings in North America to the crown, the war debt bankrupted both countries which later caused the American & French Revolutions. That there is the real irony, the British fought for the American colonies causing an enormous war debt, than raised taxes in the colonies to pay for the war which saved the colonies ass, and the Americans turn around and rebel, sticking England with the tab. That is some funny shit, it would be like taking a lady out to dinner, getting in a fight to defend her honor and busting up the bar in the process. The bar owner wants you to pay 50% of the damage and when you turn around to ask her for some cash she kicks you in the balls and runs off with the guy you just beat up to protect her from. Classic!!!

Charles J. Nutrocker
A terrible disaster that on the face of it at least, looks to have been totally preventable. Indeed, and based on that fact I can't wait for the investigation to uncover exactly why it happened...safe to say there's gonna be a few people sacked over this incident...some of the bodies may never be found... Reading the comments over at cbc.ca regarding this tragedy is sickening (as it was for the Calgary flooding)...people taking advantage of something like this just to try and push forth partisan political or anti-oil agendas...stick to the tragedy, folks, help out if you can, save the goddamn soapbox ranting for later! The 4 Runes
First the Calgary floods, then the fatal disaster in Lac-Mégantic. I wish all those affected in these tragedies Godspeed. Their situations were quite horrible compared to what happened to us in Toronto yesterday (Monday) afternoon. Toronto go hit with an epic rainstorm.125 mm (5") fell in just over an hour . Flooding everywhere. 1400 people had to be rescued from the GO Train (the regianl train service). The highest one day rainfall ever recorded in our City. Backyard was flooded and spent all night mopping and squeegin the basement.. No power so I couldnt shop vac until power was restored this morning. More rain storms coming later today. My troubles are minor compared to some other people in the neighbourhood. A few people had almost two to three feet of water in their basements including sewage water . I Spent my morning talking to my Insurance company to get an adjustor out here. Oh joy. Other than the property damage to theCity and the residents, we are lucky there were no casualties.
